“Cozy family-run hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2011

Beautiful little B&B/hotel! The building has a new feel to it, and everything is spotlessly clean. The lovely family who run the hotel were always available to answer questions, and were ready with coffee and breakfast as soon as we appeared in the morning. The fresh fruit the served us was unbelievably delicious!

The owners of this bed and breakfast were very helpful and friendly, we were very appreciative of their accommodating attitudes. Its a short shuttle ride to the Monteverde cloud forest and is a good way to distance yourself from Santa Elena town center.

I wish I could have stayed more than 2 nights at El Viandante!

The rooms were large and impeccably clean, the showers were hot, and the service was unparalleled. Grace and Renzo have created a wonderful B&B, constantly attentive to everyone's needs and always offering a multitude of suggestions for activities and food. One of my favorite parts was the shared dining area - very conducive to meeting the other guests and sharing a wonderful sunset together. It was one of the few places we stayed where guests communed together easily and eagerly.

Lastly, breakfast was fast and delicious - could be anything from scrambled eggs with ham to carrot cake and sausage!

If I ever return to Costa Rica, this will be one of my first stops!

This hotel is really a B&B. It has many virtues for its very reasonable cost. Sizable rooms, very clean. Totally mutli-lingual hosts who are eager to please, very friendly, very knowledgeable about what to see and what to skip, especially restaurants. Its location is superb for walking to many restaurants and even some of the major attractions. Breakfasts are ample and the hosts go the extra mile to make sure guests are fed before leaving even on some very early excursions.
We spent nearly a week at this location and were made to feel like family. We were sorry to leave our hosts.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights during 3 weeks spent travelling in Costa Rica. The owners of El Viandante, Grace and Renzo, were very friendly, extremely helpful at all times and provided exceptional customer service. The Hotel is in a great location, pretty much central to the many activities Monteverde has to offer and there is a fantastic view of the pacific ocean from the breakfast room. Our room at the hotel was of an alpine chalet type, very spacious and modern, with a spacious en suite bathroom and was also kept very clean. Free tea and coffee was available all day long and breakfast was very good, especially Grace's amazing home made carrot cake. Many tours and activities can be booked at the hotel, with great advice on the best companies to use and the best places to eat. We had left an item at a previous hotel (3 hours away!) and Grace and Renzo spent days going out of their way to successfully arrange for it to be picked up and returned to us at El Viandante. We certainly felt like it was our "home from home" and we know that other guests staying there at the same time felt the same way. The rates charged at this hotel are great value for money. In our opinion, this is "THE" best place to stay in Monteverde. Thanks to Grace & Renzo for making our trip to Monteverde an amazing time.

This hotel was great. It's located quite close to the stores and restaurants although on a very steep hill. Walking into town wasn't bad and we opted to take a taxi back for $2. The rooms were comfortable, neat, and clean. The hospitality of the owners was unforgettable. They not only helped us choose some great activities for our stay in Monteverde but had some fantastic suggestions for the remainder of our trip through Costa Rica.

4 stars for the wonderful care & service provided by Grace & Renzo.

Since taking over they have re-modeled the place into a small rustic mountain hotel. They used light wood to cover ceilings & walls; modernized the electrical, plumbing & heating; provide free WIFI; & free parking.

They prepare breakfast to order, & serve it in a spacious common room with breathtaking views. The view before you spreads from the nearby mountains & valleys...all the way to the Nicoya peninsula & the Pacific ocean!

It is walking distance to St. Elena, although the hill on the way back is pretty steep. We liked all of G&R's recommendations on restaurants & activities.

Please note, any hotel in this area located on an exposed mountain top can be very windy, & the wind can be loud. We found it difficult to sleep when the wind howled. So fabulous views may be accompanied by howling winds.

During our stay we noticed the accommodations in this area are designed for guests to go out & enjoy Monteverde National Park & the surrounding areas. They are not designed for guests to stay on the grounds all day...no inclusive style resorts.
