“Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2014

Poco a Poco was a very nice hotel. The hotel staff could not have been better -5 stars! Michael at the front was extremely helpful booking our excursions.

Although the bathrooms were a bit dated the room was a good size and the bed was very comfortable. The location is good, it’s walking distance to the town and away from most of the noise (but it is located on the main road and can be a little noisy. There were road repairs at the entrance to the hotel during our stay but there’s too much to do and see in Monteverde to sleep in). The restaurant was very good, and the nightly entertainment by the impressive Gonzalo Gonzales was very good. We spent our evenings sipping wine and enjoying his music.

I don’t understand the poor reviews, I travel a lot and this was a nice hotel for the price and the area. People just need to read the hotel description and reviews before booking and complaining.

Note: There was no closet in the room, only drawers. Also know that there is no elevator at the hotel or a/c but Monteverde generally stays cool enough, too bad there were no screens on the windows - although typical for Central America, it would have kept the bugs out.

Room Tip: There are no elevators on the property.

Dear Tricia. Thank you very much for your review. We are very glad you enjoyed your stay, you truly did enjoy and took advantage of all our services and added values. Special thanks for commenting about our food, restaurant and live music! Gonzalo and Josue are both our musicians and they play every night during dinner and also they are quick to attend special requests, serenades, live music shows by the pool etc.
I´m very glad you mention our restaurant and food, not many people do so, despite the fact that our food is one of the best in Monteverde and our ambience is great.
Our staff members are indeed trying their best to be the most accommodating and helpful, friendly and enthusiastic, our team is always ready to assist. Thank you for letting others know about it, this one is our biggest strength.
The road works are done already, and yes, we are close to the street yet, this permits an easy and quick access to down town and all its attractions, restaurants, bars etc, this condition creates a bit of noise from traffic and other sources, but it’s never too loud and nights are quiet and calm.
We are gradually redoing our bathrooms and fixing some features in the rooms, each room has a large cabinet where one can put clothes, luggage and toiletries, it kind of works as a closet, it even has hangers, the space is not so tall for coats or dresses, but it works for some clothes.
We are putting screens on windows, ( mosquito nets ) on the ones that are left without it, and as you said, there´s no air conditioning in the rooms, there are no A/C hotels in Monteverde, we are at 5.000 feet of elevation and its cooler here than in other destinations in Costa Rica. We are up on the Cloud Forest!!!
Thank you very much.

Stayed here for a few days during a three week trip in Costa Rica and we were impressed by the clean accommodation, tasty breakfast, live music entertainment and accommodating staff. Jonathan and Wilbur in the dining room were particularly attentive and helpful in recommending attractions, tours and helping us identify wildlife in our photos.

Dear Venconmigo.
Thank you for your review, Monteverde is located at 5.000 feet above sea level, on the mountains, very windy and cloudy over here and temperature is usually cooler than in other destinations. There are no air conditioning hotels in Monteverde. Our pool is one of the highlights of the hotel, heated, with a nice wet bar and kids pool section. Live music shows and great food / ambience at our restaurant. Our breakfast buffet offers fruits, cereal, coffee, juice, rice and beans, eggs, cheese, toasts and more, guests are usually pleased with our selections.
You have mentioned a couple of things: ice bucket and Kleenex, that I´m going to try to install in the coming months.
We offer a privileged location, close to town, to supermarkets, bars, food, tours, shops and more.
Thank you

Very comfortable and the staff couldn't have been nicer.
Driving here was amazingly difficult. They should fix the roads.
Walking into town was easy (coming back not as much).

Lots to see and do in the area.

Dear Mr/Mrs Pelican S, thank you for selecting this tittle for your review. We want to be the best in hotel in Monteverde period!!! To offer the best service, best quality, best amenities and best experience. We already have the best food and best staff in Monteverde!!!
Thank you, on their behalf we wish to thank you for letting other know about our hard working – service committed personnel.
The roads in and out of Monteverde are indeed being fixed, access around the lake could be tricky sometimes but they are actually working on it, second: there´s only a 10 miles gap of dirt road down to Panamerican Road, our government is nowadays working to make a much better, safer, smoother access.
Monteverde is privileged due to the special ecosystem and its natural richness, so many things to do and enjoy. Nature, adventure, culture, adrenaline, etc. We are very glad you enjoyed the cloud forest. Down town Santa Elena is only three blocks away,, it’s a very short walk home, and it offers lots to see and do.
Thank you and happy travels,

This is a very good hotel with clean rooms, small pool, good restaurant, and a bar that has live entertainment. The standout feature is the staff, who were very pleasant throughout the trip. When someone in my party thought he lost his wallet, the owner of the hotel got involved by having his ENTIRE staff drop everything they were doing to help look for it all over the property (my friend found his wallet in his luggage). The location is a short walk from "downtown." The breakfast had decent offerings, but measured only average compared to the other hotels in which I stayed during the trip.

Hello William, It was great to meet you and specially after the good news on the missing wallet, we were a bit concerned since the hotel was very full and it seemed that the wallet was misplaced at the pool area, I´m glad it turned out ok. Thank you for mentioning our best features,, most reviews always focus on the bad things. Live music and great food are two of our biggest selling points, heated pool, Jacuzzi, spa,, etc,, and specially the fact that we are hotel located just a couple of blocks away from down town. This becomes very convenient for guests that are willing to explore and enjoy the town.
Thank you for your comment on breakfast, we´ll get into this and will try to fix it a little bit.
On behalf of all our staff: Gracias y pura vida!!!!!

Stayed here for two days, a good hotel with good food and service but Monteverde is very windy so be prepared, but do not let it put you off visiting. The hotel does live music almost every night which is good but you have to have a booking the restaurant .

Greetings Mrs Deirdre. Thank you very much for your review, we are a very comfortable, affordable, complete hotel, with good added values, such as our food, the music, heated pool, Jacuzzi, spa,, and very well equipped facilities. We are located just 3 blocks away from down town. Near restaurants, info centers, supermarkets and much more.
It does get very windy up here sometimes, we are at the continental divide and all this richness is directly linked with wind and water.
Just bring warm clothes and enjoy the cloud forest!!

Everything about this hotel was wonderful. I stayed there with a friend about a year ago on a trip to Costa Rica and this was definitely one of the highlights. The room was the perfect size for us with two full beds (very comfortable), the grounds were awesome, and the location was very convenient for walking around town. We booked through Latin American Destinations and they offered shuttle service to all excursions from the hotel as well. Also two thumbs up for being eco-friendly!
