Owner description: The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

“Great place to visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2015

My wife and I originally visited back in 2003 and loved our visit, so coming back to Costa Rica 12 years later we had to take the kids here. Admission isn't super cheap but it is worth it and goes towards supporting the facility. Everyone here is very passionate about butterflies and insects. We had an awesome tour with a funny young gal, the kids loved her! It was a treat to learn all about different insects, hold some of them and even release some new butterflies! We highly recommend visiting!

“Excellent!!!! With 2 & 5 year olds - perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2015

David and his wife (sorry, I can't remember her name! Gasp) are the new owners and what a team they are!!! His wife is so incredible with kids! She helped to keep mine entertained while we waited for David, our guide. She was animated, patient and kind.

David was so knowledgeable!! They have an insect feature in addition to the butterfly garden that they show before doing the butterflies. This can be (depending on one's comfort level) a hands-on experience. They have walking sticks, leaf bugs (not sure if that's the correct name), preying mantis, scorpions (not hands on), beetles, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something. So cool! And they even have a couple of Hercules Beetles! Very educational indeed. Then, they collect butterflies that have recently emerged from their cocoons and are ready to fly. They place each on in their own plastic container and gives each person in the party a container. We then walked up to the first garden where we opened our containers and allowed the butterflies to fly free. Some didn't and we coaxed them out by having them sit on our fingers and they would fly away. One didn't and my husband carried it around the first garden.

Also, we were surprised by 2 white-faced monkeys playing on top of the first garden's net. The were there for some time so we got another treat.

There are 3 gardens in total. There were so many different butterflies and we really enjoyed our time there. Just to name a couple of the butterflies that were there: Morphos, Owl, Zebra, Postman to name a few.

Now, apparently the tour ends at the gift store, but David mentioned that because of our small kids he would skip this part. We really appreciated that kind gesture as anyone with small kids can attest to the attraction "things" have to little hands.

At the end of our tour, the adults were chatting about how David and his wife ended up here. David's wife had corralled the kids into the insect room where they were giving the insects water. This is where we found them and what they were doing when we came to collect our kids to leave.

Excellent tour and David and his wife are phenomenal!! We would highly recommend, whether or not you have small kids. Great experience and beautiful views of Monteverde too!

“Delightful butterflies”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2015

I've been to lots of butterfly gardens. The thing that is special about this one is that they have Morpho butterflies (some of the time). Morphos are several species of large iridescent blue butterflies that are native to Central and South America. The thing that will make you insane is that the butterflies almost never rest with the blue upper wings showing. They will flit around you and then land on a twig and close their wings before you have a chance to photograph them. Good luck!

“Fun experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2015

We were driving around Monteverde waiting to go on another tour and had a few hours to kill so we decided to go to the butterfly garden. It was very informative and interesting. We got to see a lot of different kinds of insects that are native to the area. I would recommend the tour to anyone who is interested in insects and children would ins the tour fun as well!
