Owner description: The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

“Loved all the butterflies!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

The volunteer guide started the tour by talking about insects they had in small exhibits, which was very informative. We then spent the next ~1 hour talking about/looking at butterflies. We even released butterflies into a few of the gardens!

“Butterfly gardens with a surprize!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

A very educational and enjoyable experience. Presenters/guides have a great sense of humor discussing what could be a little dry.

“Great for little kids!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

We had an excellent time at the Butterfly Garden. We had an excellent guide - she told us she was volunteering from Canada - and she was very very good. There was more than just butterflies - but bugs, beetles and ants! It is simply and straight forward but very Costa Rican and our kids loved it.

“Crazy Cool Bugs and Lovely Butterflies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

When I arrived at the Monteverde Butterfly Garden I expected to see butterflies, but I got so much more.

First of all, I had an excellent guide. She told the group all sorts of crazy and fascinating things about insects and arachnids in the nature centre. Then we went through the 4 different butterfly gardens and I learned even more. There's a butterfly that makes caimans cry just so it can soak up its tears for minerals, how nuts is that!

Not only were the butterflies beautiful, the actual gardens were gorgeous too, lots of different plants and flowers. Even while going from garden to garden, the guide had things to say about some of the trees.

This was a very educational and fun activity, and well worth the money. I highly recommend it.

“Learn more about the small world around you”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

It was unseasonably cold and windy that day, but she wanted to see the Morpho butterfly. We went to the butterfly gardin. The tour was informative and eye opening in spite of the majority of butterflies hiding from the weather conditions. Soon, however, it was clear that these fragile creatures were not coming out to play. Just then, fluttering right in her face, was a beautiful wingspan of subtle, shimmering blue. The day was saved! And the museum tour was educational for me.
