Owner description: The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

“skippable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2012

Well, i personally love butterflies and this place was rated as a "must" on my trip to Monteverde. Then, after walking a couple of kilometers from cloud forest reserve, we found the place, that actually turned out to be the garden of a private property. The entrance was super expensive -$12 pp- and the guy at the desk told us that there was a group to come in half an hour so that he wouldn't be able to guide us. well, we said, we can wander around on our own, which was actually what we did.
There are three gardens representing three altitudes that exist in Costa Rica, and in each garden you can find the related species of butterflies.
Though the place was nice and you could see lots of butterflies, i don't think it's worh the money and the effort spent getting there.

“my kid was in heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

It was a tad bit colder that day so we were unable to see the butterflies move around HOWEVER the man who donated all of his specimens to the museum from his lifetime work was without words. Most brillant examples of species that i have ever seen. And the tour guide was extremely knowledgable and answered all of our questions precisely.

“Amazing place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

This place is really great with a very nice staff. They explain first all the stages of the butterflies as well as other info about insects. We had the chance to release two new butterflies (one was a blue morpho).
They have several different atmospheres with each time different butterflies. It was a nice experience

“Great for adults and children”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

Very informative introduction with lots of bugs to look at, then a stroll through different butterfly areas. My animal-crazy 3-year-old loved it, and so did I
