“Great location, away from crowds at Santa Elena”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

Hotel El Bosque is tucked into the woods, on property with wonderful walking trails, yet it's just 3 minute walk up the driveway to the "Monteverde center," a small set of 2 restaurants, one bakery, one grocery, one women's cooperative. So great for people without car who want to be able to walk to variety of food options. Much better location than the now over-crowded Santa Elena where most "Monteverde hotels" are located. Lots of bird watching or walking/jogging on trails on the property (and many local bird guides start their tours at the foot of driveway, across from Stella's bakery). Within walking distance to cheese factory and Quaker school, but have to take bus or taxi to the cloud forest reserve.

Because of location, and peaceful grounds, I would probably stay again, but it is quite rustic/primitive, think cabins in the woods, more than hotel. (Which is good, if that's what you like). The two of us stayed in a room that was so filled with beds (small double, two twins) that we used the beds for luggage, and hanging out space. Bathroom adequate and fridge nice. Room safe was broken and staff didn't think important to help us find a room with working safe.

Very generous breakfast buffet, (though I was sorry the bird feeding station others enjoyed was not being filled with fruit the 3 mornings we were there). Wifi service good at breakfast room (and its veranda open all the time), intermittent in rooms.

The staff were friendly and laid-back, maybe too much so. A couple of small errors (telling us interbus would take us to hotel, when in fact it left us at at a Denny's near the airport, and directing us to a restaurant that was closed Sundays) prevent me from giving the service a high grade.

Accommodating and friendly, El Bosque was where my mother, my wife, my dog and myself stayed on an overnight recently. They do not accept pets as rule but made an exception for us after talking to me about the dog's general manner. He's a guard dog but well behaved. The property was lovely, walking distance from town if you are a walker, and across the street from a great bakery which served real breakfast. I would stay here again.

Hotel El Bosque is located in Monteverde, just off the main road. It is close to several restaurants, but is tucked back off the road, so it is quiet and gives you the experience of being in the forest. There are a number of trails on the property that are good for birding, walking or jogging. I did all three. There is also a large grassed area in the center of the rooms that is big enough to toss a frisbee. The breakfast is yummy. The only down side is that the wifi is spotty. But, it is always strong at the breakfast dining room. This hotel is affordable, convenient, clean, quiet and full of trails. I recommend it to anyone coming to Monteverde to enjoy the natural environment.

We were not expecting to like this place, but fell in love with it. The rooms are clean, the staff is helpful, and you are in the forest. Our kids want to come back to this hotel over the other more expensive placed that we stayed at.

Had a great stay at el Bosque. Nice rustic room was clean with comfortable beds. Great buffet breakfast each morning. Lucky to see a resident Capuchin monkey at the breakfast house kitchen window - for her banana breakfast. Also saw Motmot birds and Agoutis. Numerous walking / hiking trails on property as well as a Night Walk. Numerous attractions and great restaurants well within walking distance and many others including the Monteverde Reserve within a short drive. Quiet location - away from the busy/ noisy downtown. Great value for money and would definately stay here again.

Includes a simple but tasty breakfast including eggs, rice and beans, fruit, coffee, tea, and juice. It has its own hiking trails and night walk. Walking distance to Monteverde cheese factory, a local organic grocery store called Wholefoods, a great bakery, and adjacent to two reserves. St Elena where most of the town is located is about a 15 to 20 minute walk or 5 minute taxi. Anna behind the desk at El Bosque gave us great tour and restaurant recommendations.

Two downfalls would be there is no wi-fi in the room, and some inects. We had ants in our room and a dead roach on arrival. Hotel was about $25 per night with tax, so if you can handle an insect or two its a great value.

We stayed 2 nights, surrounded by nature. We woke up every morning to Iguti's (they look like large squirrels), missed the monkeys because the hotel soda was closed for 2 week. However, the hotel is within walking distance to a natural food store, a Soda, a wonderful restaurant & bakery (Stella's), an Italian restaurant, an Argentinian restaurant that also offers chololate tours and bat tours (the food was so delicious we ate there twice AND got a complimentary "after hours" chocolate tour), 2 biollogical reserves, a hummingbird garden. Downtown is also within walking ditance to El Bosque.
The rooms are clean & well-kept, the beds are comfy and the staff is INCREDIBLE & very knowledgeable about local attractions. The hotel is family owned and you really feel like you're at home with people who greet you, ask how you are and help you with whatever you need, instead of in a sterile hotel where you're just a hotel number.
I enjoyed Monteverde so much I'm going back in December, and staying at El Bosque!

Room Tip: We stayed in room #4, away from the road and close to a gorgeous tropical garden, but ALL of the roo...
