Hotel El Bosque is tucked into the woods, on property with wonderful walking trails, yet it's just 3 minute walk up the driveway to the "Monteverde center," a small set of 2 restaurants, one bakery, one grocery, one women's cooperative. So great for people without car who want to be able to walk to variety of food options. Much better location than the now over-crowded Santa Elena where most "Monteverde hotels" are located. Lots of bird watching or walking/jogging on trails on the property (and many local bird guides start their tours at the foot of driveway, across from Stella's bakery). Within walking distance to cheese factory and Quaker school, but have to take bus or taxi to the cloud forest reserve.
Because of location, and peaceful grounds, I would probably stay again, but it is quite rustic/primitive, think cabins in the woods, more than hotel. (Which is good, if that's what you like). The two of us stayed in a room that was so filled with beds (small double, two twins) that we used the beds for luggage, and hanging out space. Bathroom adequate and fridge nice. Room safe was broken and staff didn't think important to help us find a room with working safe.
Very generous breakfast buffet, (though I was sorry the bird feeding station others enjoyed was not being filled with fruit the 3 mornings we were there). Wifi service good at breakfast room (and its veranda open all the time), intermittent in rooms.
The staff were friendly and laid-back, maybe too much so. A couple of small errors (telling us interbus would take us to hotel, when in fact it left us at at a Denny's near the airport, and directing us to a restaurant that was closed Sundays) prevent me from giving the service a high grade.
