“AMAZING”

Everything about El Establo was amazing! I stayed fro 4 days and the staff went out of their way to make my stay great. As an architect i loved the way the hotel was integrated to its surroundings. Additionally when i think about rainforest and nature i imagine a place like El Establo, they are not trying to compete with their environment but embracing it and translating it to their buildings with the finishes and the positioning of the rooms so that every single rooms gets an unobstructed breathtaking view. The site is so complete that they have their own zip lines and walking trails. The spa is tucked away in the forest so as to provide a super private and relaxing service. Their personnel are trained professionals who provide a great customer service.
Loved my stay!

My husband and I stayed here for two nights during our honeymoon. We were impressed by the rooms and facilities. It would have been great except for one thing - the noisy rooms. Unfortunately the first room that we were in came off a hallway that had uncarpeted stone floors. Every noise (even normal conversations) were magnified. This was then exacerbated by the fact that our bathroom had louvred windows which opened onto this hallway, allowing more noise into our room.

We rang reception after our first sleepless night and asked if there was anything they could do. To their credit, the hotel staff were very apologetic and immediately arranged for us to be upgraded to the "honeymoon suite". This room was really lovely, quite luxurious with a sensational view and great amenities but sadly suffered the same flaw in terms of backing onto the poorly sound proofed hallway.

In short, this is a lovely hotel for deep, deep sleepers, those who go to bed very late and get up very early, and those who don't mind sleeping with earplugs in. Everything else was great.

El Establo was the only bad thing about our holiday in Costa Rica. Stay here if:

- you like to be treated like cattle, including being branded by a wristband which they insist you wear but is not checked at breakfast, on entry to the hotel or anywhere on the grounds.

- you don't mind not having curtains on every window in your room

- you like to be handed a list of rules and regulations when you check in rather than a list of guest benefits.

- you think a honeymoon suite should have no toilet door!!!

- you want to be equipped with a fridge that doesn't stay on when you are out of the room - making it pointless

- you want to be spoken to like you are just getting in the way, rather than as a valued customer

- you want to have to collect your 'free coffee' every day from reception

On the plus side- the guys who run the zipwire are great and the view is amazing. but the view is amazing in many places in Monteverde - don't bother paying the overinflated prices here.

If you are travelling to Monteverde- there are 36 hotels. We were told after we got there none of them have elevators. There is a lot of walking on stairs on this multi leveled property. Yes, they have a shuttle to get yiou anywhere on the property, but you still have to do a lot of wallking involving starirs. The property is only marginally well maintained. None of the roojms have any thermostats in them. I have never stayed at any hotel where you could not control your own temperature in the room. Staff never even bothered to ask how our stay was when we departed. Food in the restaurants were vas fair. I am noit sure whether it was the week we stayed there, it had a lot of kids and not too many families and couples.

What a spectacular location - the property is set on a huge hill. Which is a gift and a curse - more on this in a bit.

The Hotel is located in the town of Santa Elena - from which you get access to the myriad of activities focused on the Costa Rica Cloud Forests.

We were able to stay for one day out of our week in Costa Rica and that was not enough. Though we did fill the time:

The hotel offers its own zip-lining adventure - a lot of fun, run by a professional team that made the adventure really enjoyable. They took care with the participants that were a little wary. For the more adventurous, they made it worth while. Ronny and the team did a fantastic job. The team also took photos and videos of us zip lining -- so we could concentrate on the activity!.

The property offers a night walk through the forests - with the hope that you get to see flora/fauna that comes out just after dusk. We were luck enough to spot several species of birds, lizards, frogs and insects. Spectacular night skies! So dark out there that the skies lit up with the stars.

We were able to enjoy the spa - great massages! - and the pool.

The restaurant on the hotel property, the Laggus was very good. We had an excellent dinner and the wine list (while limited) was good too. The service was impeccable, friendly and attentive.

The rooms were rustic - but large. All the amenities for a modern hotel were provided. Lock safe was primitive - but functional. The accommodations had a "rustic lodge" feel and the beds were comfortable. I spent a good amount of time on the balcony in a rocking chair - great views, clean air, big skies and the sounds of the forest. what more would you ask for.

The rooms could have been a little more plush - but we did not mind since we were there for only one night. If staying longer, would certainly be looking for more for the price.

The buffet breakfast, while plentiful, was a little basic.

Okay - the hill curse. The property is spread out across a steep hill - so to get from our room (which was in the highest block on the hill) you had to rely on the hotel shuttle to bring you to the restaurant/spa/pool/lobby and back. Walking down the hill was okay - but getting back up was a major challenge - unless you were fit! Regrettably, I realized I was not. They could add a few more shuttles to reduce the wait times - though in the spirit of Pura Vida, a little slower pace was called for and the views are breathtaking! So the waits were manageable.

My wife and I had high expectations for this leg of our trip and were a bit disappointed in almost every way. This hotel had beautiful views from our room which was the honeymoon suite, but other than that it was just fair. The room had an ant problem which I didn't mind as it is in the cloud forest and I figure that just comes with the territory, but my wife didn't appreciate them sharing the room with us. My biggest issue was that the hotel is spread out over several buildings up the hill requiring a good walk or shuttle, and yet we (the GUESTS) were expected to go out of our way for every amenity. Want coffee? You have to go to the front desk and get it? Laundry needing done? Bundle it up and carry it to the front desk and it will be ready the next day! We actually dropped off laundry in the early afternoon and it wasn't ready until almost 4 pm the following day. They just seemed to make everything a hassle for guests. On top of all that you had to wear a cheesy bracelet while staying there. Who wants to go around wearing a plastic bracelet for several days? As for food, the only thing we ate there was the free breakfast and it was, like almost everything else, just ok. On the plus side, the massages at their spa, while a bit pricey, were very relaxing.

This hotel was the worst thing about an otherwise great trip. This hotel went out of its way to make our trip more difficult. The staff was rude and unaccommodating. The rooms are dated and uncomfortable. The sense you have is that the are scrimping on every little thing although you are paying over top dollar. There was nothing fun or cultural about the place. It was drab and unexpressive in a town that is really fun. The family in the next unit had two screaming children who had no sense of time. It was so uncomfortable that we chose to cut our trip in that location short and move on. Needless to say they were absolutely intractable about any kind of a refund, partial or otherwise.
