“Beautiful hotel near the cloud forest to calm you”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2009

Reaching Monteverde after a long journey including a boat ride from Arenal, Hotel Fonda Vela was very welcoming. A huge room (look out for the insets though) overlooking the garden was a luxury. A bit away from the town Santa Elena, we decided to take a taxi for dinner. After a hearty meal, we decided to sleep early for we had to leave for the cloud forest next morning at 7am. With the jet lag still bothering, we were up by 4am. Had a delicious breakfast (best costa rican meal) and walked up to the cloud forest. Somehow we missed our guide but we were lucky to join another group. A beautiful place and a beautiful cloud forest. It was great fun even relaxing in the garden of Fonda vela where the monkeys pranced around.

We loved it at Fonda Vela. We stayed there 2 nights and was nervous because we read that it was buggy with no screens. Well I have more bugs in the summer in NY and got biten by more bugs at home. The location was perfect for relaxation and piece and quiet. They are in the process of building a swimming pool that will be wonderful. The room was clean and roomy. Although there was no air condition you don't need it. It was cool every night. We had to shut the windows. The restaurant at night was fabulous and breakfast was good too. Take a cab into town to eat there too. Stellas is a great lunch spot. We did not spend much of our time hanging out at the hotel and hopefully you won't either because there are places and experiences that are waiting for you in Monteverde but perfect location for time to chill after a busy day of adventure. FYI Book all adventures in morning or early afternoon during rainy season.

It was a nice hotel but no ac and the windows don't have screens. It was a bit pricey too but we were touring during the high season.

We stayed in a junior suite. The room was beautiful but stank of wood polish. While it is possible to walk to other things from there, it is an unpleasant walk along a busy dirt road. The breakfasts and dinners were quite good, and the staff never failed to help us. The hotel has extensive grounds, but the gardens have not been maintained. The pool has not been completed yet.

We were so happy to get to Fonda Vela after a 3 hour perilous ride across water and through the mountians. The hotel was good for what we paid but if you are calling your hotel eco-friendly, the first smell of your room should not be a strong, medicinal smell of either cleaning fluid or insect repellent when we first opened out door. The room was nice but had only one window with a screen to open so it was hard to air out the smell or to breathe the fresh mountain air. More screens are needed. The acccomodations were spacious with 2 beds- one upstairs, one downstairs. Linens were scratchy and left much to be desired; reminding me of what we used to use at sleep away camp.

The staff was friendly and accomodating; we had use of the internet and a good restaurant. Restaurant was reasonable with fine service- a few more native dishes could had been on the menu. I didnt come to Monteverde to eat European style food although everything we had was tasty. No pool in this place although they are building one and that will be a welcome accomodation as there is nothing to do in the evening at the place. You need a cab to get anywhere although we did try to walk everywhere- to town and the Reserve. Dont take any of their recomended tours- too much $$$ for what we got. Do yourself a favor and go into town and book what looks interestng- we took a night tour rocommended by the hotel and saw absolutely nothing at night except some beautiful stars. We saw more walking into town the next day by ourselves or with our guide at Monteverde reserve. Book that right at the reserve. No need to pay extra for a tour. Good value doing that. Too dark at night here. Not sure if I would stay here again but it was clean and basic.

Service was outstanding and our stay was a no-frills opportunity to see Monteverde cloud forest. From that standpoint the hotel was what we were looking for. The rooms really could have been great but had a strong remnant of the cleaning solution smell and only one window had screens. Definitely out of town but was a reasonable drive to both the cloud forest and back into town.
