“Nice but Noisey”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

Be sure and request a room on one of the top floors. The lower floor is extremely noisey and you will be awake by about 6:30 every morning. Food is good and the grounds are very nice. The hotel is secluded but does offer some nice hiking trails. The balcony with a view and nice chairs was a pleasant surprise. Overall a good experience except for the noise. We saw no bugs or spiders in our room and all of the wood in the room added to the lodge-like experience.

Room Tip: Stay in one of the upper rooms.

While debating whether to do the Jeep-Boat-Jeep tour or stay in Monteverde for a couple of nights, my travel buddy and I opted for the latter and were pleased with our choice.

Located less than 3 mins driving on the Inca roads from the reserve and a few miles from Santa Elena, Trapp Family Lodge features spacious rooms with large windows that open into the Cloud Forrest and stylish, contemporary furniture. There is a slight smell of varnish in the hallway, but also a lovely smell of wood in the room that adds onto the lodge in the woods atmosphere. Room was also very clean and had a sitting. Room/balcony with comfy chairs and large windows -- perfect for relaxing after your adventurous Monteverde excursion!

Breakfast was nothing to write home about, but the food was hot (scrambled eggs, toast, cake, plantains, rice + beans) and the service was friendly. They do have a menu for extra breakfast items if you desire extra food.

All in all, Trapp Family Lodge was a lovely and comfortable way to end our Costa Rica vacation! Thanks to the staff for their hospitality and an extra special shout out to Elena of AnywhereCostaRica.com for her suggesting this wonderful accommodation!

Pura Vida!!!

Trapp was much like feeling you were in a dormitory. Other rooms movements echo down the hallway. There is no air conditioning, and no fridge. One thing that really bugged us was the bugs. There were these small beetles or maybe roaches that would scurry away everytime we lifted our shoes or bags and they would crawl right into a small space between the floorboards and the wall. There were also mosquitoes, spiders, and other weird looking bugs finding their way into the room. The last night we got invaded by millions of army ants. Clearly we are in a rain forest and there will be bugs but the rooms are not great at keeping them out. The view from our room was beautiful overlooking the mountains. It should be considering that the hotel is far up the mountain away from town. It's walkable to town but its tough.

Our travel company suggested my family stay in this hotel. It was not a great choice.

This hotel is a good 10 minutes drive outside of Monteverde. It had a pervading smell of varnish which was very off putting and the reception desk on arrival did not seem to know we were coming, and once our booking was acknowledged, they had no idea how long we had booked for!

The choice at breakfast was extremely poor, and although the hotel was nearly empty what was on offer for breakfast kept running out. Meals were overpriced and the one dinner we ate there was accompanied by stone-cold vegetables. We did complain but the staff did not seem to care.

We went for dinner a number of times into Monteverde. Some lovely eating places in the town. The taxi fare cost $10 each way (there were 6 of us so we needed a large cab). We reduced the cost of this by asking our excursions to drop us in town and we had a late lunch/early dinner, only needed a taxi one way back to the hotel and then we did not have to eat lunch or dinner there at all.

The rooms were large and clean, the beds very comfy.

Closest hotel to the entrance of the Monteverde NP. Very nice hotel. Big comfortable rooms with free wifi. Good restaurant for lunch and dinner. Choices at breakfast rather limited. Make sure you have 4x4 when drinving up in rainy season, because rough road to get there. I would recommend this hotel very much to families travelling with children too.

We loved our 2 night stay at Trapp Family Lodge in Monteverde. What a delight to wake up and look at the clouds on the mountain and hear the music of the numerous birds that live in the forest. Well worth the long bumpy ride to Monteverde. We had dinner the night we arrived and it was delicious but a bit pricy. The breakfast was okay -- not the best, but satisfying and fresh. We especially enjoyed the yummy marmalade. The staff is well trained and provided excellent customer service. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We wished we had stayed longer and will definitely stay there again if we return. We recommend it -- if you like nature - you won’t be disappointed!

Room Tip: All rooms have a wonderful view of the forest.

Been going to Costa Rica since 1990...and for last 10 years. This place is nice and I would recommend it. Beautiful setting and wood floors and ceilings. Of course mountain suites are nicer than regular rooms...we stayed in regular rooms. Don't like policy of charing per person even for kids. Should be charged for room with 4 people maximum. Breakfast was good but did not eat other meals there due to very high prices. I suggest they lower the prices on that. Tons of tour places in Monteverde, but couldn't hurt to have a little desk set up in hotel as it is kind of secluded...but that makes it great too! Bring a 4 x 4......

Room Tip: if you can afford get the mountain suite
