Came here on a planned birdwatching tour and our guide Roy arranged to meet Melvin Leiton who is a local guide. Both are enthusiasts and fully trained but Melvin knew the area like the back of his hand and so Roy wanted to make use of his expertise. This expertise is not surprising given that he was born and brought up in the next door valley - St Luis. Melvin seems to be fluent in bird speak. He could spot hidden birds, knew instantly what was calling, and was then able to mimic it to bring it closer so that we could actually spot it. He is a total enthusiast for nature and was a great companion. we saw many different species including the Resplendent Quetzal. Not just glimpses either.
I would strongly suggest hiring a guide if you plan to walk here. It will make your trip much more enjoyable even if you are not particularly interested in birds. If you are going to use a guide the n get Melvin - he is just brilliant. Also bring binoculars, you will see much more.
