This 55,000 acre private reserve straddles the continental divide and includes nine different types of habitats, like cloudforest, montane rainforest, and more. It is home to many endemic species of birds and frogs and many endangered plant and animal species. I have seen the barenecked umbrella bird there several times! Spider monkeys, a perched ornate hawk eagle, peccary, agouti, coati, curassow, guan, my species list is literally hundreds of names long! The Children's Eternal Rain Forest recently celebrated 25 years of responsible stewardship of this magnificent resource. Without it, Lake Arenal would dry up. The field stations within this forest are available for spending the night and provide a complete sensory immersion, impossible to experience in a more heavily visited forest like the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve.
