“Awesome Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

We spent 5 nights here and loved every minute of it! The tree top apartment is smallish, but completely functional for our family of four (kids ages 8 & 10). Yes, it is a simple place, but there is great beauty in simplicity. Sabine and Guy made sure we were comfortable and set us up with all of the activities that we needed. The kids loved the swing on the middle level and all of us were fascinated by the occasional visits by the capuchins coming through in the evening.

My wife and I spent two nights in the top apartment with our two kids. We had the entire place to ourselves which was nice. The top floor is literally in the tree tops with a beautiful view of the hillside across the valley. The furnishings are very unique and there is artwork scattered throughout the interior and exterior. This place is one-of-a-kind. It had everything we needed in the kitchen. It is also a short walk to restaurants which was great. Highly recommended.

It was a neat place with a pretty view of the mountainside and little river down below. We were greeted by monkeys towards our last days there, which was pretty neat. The first level shower was falling apart - literally....we could see the shower water pour out through the crack between the wall and floor..so that was a little frightening. The middle level with the two bedrooms on each side was neat, but had no bathroom or sink...or any place to unpack like drawers or shelves...so we had to blindly shuffle downstairs in rainstorms to find the bathroom the size of an outhouse because the motion-sensor light was out or broken...or something. The upstairs set up was nice. It was the only level that had a real kitchen with a sink and a real shower that wasn't collapsing so our three families spent the majority of time hanging out there and also outside in the mezzanine patio area. This place is really interesting because it truly is a tree house, which is very unique. But this isn't a four or five star place...this is more of a cabin-like setting. I don't even think there were fans for airflow..and honestly sometimes the humidity was a bit stifling. Am I kind of a priss? No...but at the same time my mind was set for a more relaxing time where running water is taken for granted and we didn't have to share just one shower. But if you're up for an adventurous time in a treehouse, then this place is it!

Our host was great by the way. He had really good recommendations of the area and we took his advice on a lot of suggestions...and we were not disappointed for the area tours.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights for our anniversary. Sabine was the best hostess and had flowers, fruit, and petals throughout the small bottom apartment. She was also able to fit us in on a horseback ride at the last minute that was so worth the extra money. (See Sabine's Smiling Horses)

I would have to agree with the others that the decor is cute, but the walls are thin and beds are a little small. My hubby and I ended up sleeping separately because of this. They also smelled a little musty like the room had been cleaned a whole ago and was just opened. There was a family upstairs and we could hear everything... so it is not a place for picky sleepers. But that is really my only complaint.

The apartment is just enough in the forest that all kinds of critters and birds can be seen if you know where to look. Great place for the money!

This is a great escape where you can be close to good restaurants and activities while being surrounded by nature. You are literally among the treetops. We spent four nights and stayed in two different rooms. This worked well for both family members who wanted to go to sleep early and others who wanted to stay up reading and writing, etc. One room was the lovely Forest Level with a refrigerator, coffee maker and phone. It opens onto the balcony which has two hammocks, chairs and a nice view overlooking a small valley/creek. That’s a good place to sit and relax or use binoculars to look for birds. Our other room was a simple but cozy bedroom up a fun, spiral/metal staircase; I liked the decorative pieces of wood art and tables in it. And we saw leaf-cutter ants crossing the driveway.

Treetop House makes a good base and is only about a 5-10 minute walk to several restaurants and a co-op that sells some local crafts. We enjoyed both restaurants with Italian and Argentine cuisine for dinner and Stella’s bakery for breakfasts and yummy pies! (And there’s nice birdfeeder out Stella’s back door that attracts motmots and other birds,) We also got great views of Quetzals in a type of avocado tree at Curi-Cancha Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is a bit farther, but also in walking distance, with a cheese factory at the entrance where we enjoyed samples and delicious ice cream. Oh, we also saw an ox cart delivering large, old-style cans of milk there in the morning.

Treetop’s owner also operates Sabine’s Smiling Horses and we went riding two half days. Sabine loves her horses and we loved the rides! (I recommend sunglasses/sunscreen, a water bottle and maybe a waist pack to carry a camera if one doesn’t fit securely in a pocket.) We would definitely stay at Treetop House again.

Myself and my four sisters were very pleased with our stay at Tree Top House in Monteverde. Two sisters shared the large room with an ensuite bathroom and a balcony outside, and two shared one of the more basic rooms on the next floor. The larger room included a refrigerator, coffee maker, and phone.

Everything was clean, cozy, and comfortable. We felt at home immediately.

The location is a bit outside Monteverde, but it was easy enough to get around in a taxi when we wanted. Mostly we walked. Five minutes away were several excellent restaurants and Stella's Bakery. It would be very easy to orient your whole stay in Monteverde from this location.

We were also able to walk to the Reserve just before Monteverde where we saw at least 6 quetzales.

We would absolutely stay here any time we were in Monteverde and would recommend it to anyone.

When we got to St. Elena, Guy (owner) came to meet us within about 5 minutes and took us through the town to the treetop house. The treetop house is nice and secluded with no neighbours, but still walking distance to some restaurants. We had originally booked the top 3 floors but got switched around to the bottom three which was just fine for us! We even had an extra room to choose from. There was an awesome balcony/lounge area between the apartments that was great to hang out on and watch the world go by. We saw birds and a monkey even came by to say hello! My parents were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary and Sabine (owner) was very helpful in organizing flowers and fruit for our arrival! Thanks! The whole house is a bit of an interesting layout but it's nice to all have had separate rooms. There isn't too much privacy in terms of noise, as you hear everything and anything the people above and below are doing and what they are talking about but this was a very minor thing as we were too tired by the end of the day to really notice! We also noticed that in the lower room where my brother slept, although the bathroom was really nice, the shower is really not conveniently located, and drenches the whole bathroom :) Guy was very helpful with setting up some great tours for us during our stay. Melvin the tour guide was great, as was the sunset horseback ride with Sabine's horses! All in all an amazing stay and we loved it and will recommend this location to anyone going to the Monteverde area. It is so much better than staying at a hotel chain, as you are experiencing a real Costa Rica this way!

Room Tip: The middle room is the best that attaches to the sitting area/balcony and the ones that you reach go...
