“Relaxing break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

Visited wild coast sun after many years, and was surprised to find not much had changed. However I enjoyed the familiar feel of the place, it brought back many pleasant memories of previous visits. The rooms have had a much needed upgrade, and are spacious, light and airy, and comfortable. The suite is a a real treat, with a separate lounge , large double bathroom and bedroom, both the lounge and bedroom had balconies. Though do be careful of the monkeys that roam around...keep the doors closed if they are there. The pool is still well maintained, and the beach is within easy walking distance. Beautiful and unspoiled. You can see whales and sometimes dolphins in the distance. There is plenty of entertainment, from the golf course, water park, games room, ten pin bowling, squash , tennis etc, and lots of places to eat.

Room Tip: Sea facing rooms ...the view is amazing.

This USED to be a good hotel. The overall feel is reasonable but a dated. Carpets in hallways in desperate need of replacement. No hot water on all three days at the same time( 8 am). I asked for the duty manager who was nowhere to be found. The excuse on day two was that they were scouring the water heater. I have up on day 3. The staff are unhelpful and downright arrogant.

A lovely resort about 2 hours south of Durban that's kitted out with a decent sized casino, a kids gaming arcade, 10-pin bowling, a couple of bars and restaurants, spa, pool, tennis courts, squash courts, gym, bowls green and conference area.

Within the property grounds is a golf course (no driving range) and a water park. The hotel can also arrange river cruises and deep-sea or beach fishing.

The rooms are on the large size, each with a very decent sized balcony that has 2 sun loungers and an occasional table on them.

The ensuite bathroom has a shower cubicle (with a very powerful shower) a toilet cubicle and a decent sized bath. Aside from the door to the bathroom (next to the entrance door), there's a sliding door made up of wooden slatted binds, that can be retraced and makes the bath feel part of the overall bedroom (and you can watch TV from there too!).

The rooms are simple decorated and are very light and airy. The beds are firm and very comfortable, and dressed with plain white linen. Service throughout the hotel was efficient and friendly

There are a few things to note about this property:
- There are a significant number of wild monkeys that roam the grounds of the hotel; whilst they are harmless (if you don't goad them) they will come into your hotel room, or rummage through your items around the pool, so be aware (there's plenty of signage warning you to keep your balcony doors closed and watch your items in the outdoor areas
- the hotel is a long building that runs parallel to the coast (with the reception area, restaurants, bar and casino at one end). If you have a room with a high floor number say 150 (for first floor) or 460 for 4th floor), there's a fairly long walk to the lifts. Lower numbers (say 101, 208 etc.) are closer to the lifts and stairs
- If you take a room with a sea view, note that the sun spends most of the day behind the hotel shining onto the sea, so this means your balcony will be in shade for the vast majority of the day. This may prove to be a boon during the hot summers, but possibly not best during the milder (though still sunny) winters
- the hotel is on the cost, with gated access to the beach and sea. However, there can be strong currents at this part of the sea and shark nets (that prevent sharks coming close to the shore) are o longer in operation at this part of the coast

Room Tip: Irrespective of floor number, pick lower numbers, as these are closer to the lifts - also note that...

Recently stayed at the Wild Coast Sun and have to say the bath was a highlight. Because you're able to slide away the screen doors, you can have a bubble bath while watching TV and the sunset. Extremely friendly staff, I don't think I walked past one without being greeted. Nice restaurant options, fantastic list of activities - would recommend this in summer to make full use of the awesome waterpark.

Stayed here for a conference and positive is the beautiful setting. At the wild coast and the room i had on the 2nd floor was ocean view. Great views and be careful with the monkeys. They easily enter your room and steal items. The room itself is refurbished the last years but the maintenance is bad. Lots of small problems. TV set didn't work , bathroom light could not be switched of. And very strange and loud plumbing related noises during the whole night. Also sewer smells. Not nice. Some good restaurants at the complex. The fish monger is good. All by all great location but an average hotel by means of room

I am currently staying at the wild coast sun and had to share my experience.I had just ordered room service and found a hair in the burger, I called room service and the supervisor asked me "whose hair" it was and gave me such an attitude.its a shame to see such a good place get run to the ground.

We had a weekend break and travelled as parents with a 6 and 3 year old. All excited to see the new water slides, we were quite disappointed that most of the slides were of the extreme variety and intended for adults only, with kids less than 1.2m not allowed, not even if accompanied by an adult.

Back at the hotel, we stayed in a garden facing family room. This room type is about R 200 cheaper than the equivalent sea facing one. The garden view is drab and depressing to say the least. No landscaper has been to this "garden" in the last decade.

The room was comfortable, clean and well equipped. A recent renovation was obvious, however the lowest bidder obviously won the contract.

We had a late check-in at 22h30, and Ishmael who checked us in was exemplary in his friendly and efficient manner. A late night meal was order from room service, we waited nearly an hour and the food was average at best.

Breakfast and dinners were enjoyed at Chico's. It is buffet style.
Food quality is decent, variety and quantity is poor.
We were faced with long queues every time we went to Chico's
Dinners are unfortunately marred by stage music that makes dinner conversation impossible, making you wish you were back in your room. What happened to a quiet dinner and music/dance afterwards. The restaurant was clean and service prompt.

There are plenty of pools in and around the main hotel, strangely though, none of them are heated, we saw very few people in the water.

Our kids spent an enjoyable hour in the kids club, which was safe, and well supervised. Paid R 40

The waterslides is easy accessible by shuttle and entry to hotel residents only R 10.

Check-out is 10am and was simple.

We had a family weekend and never ventured into the casino or onto the golf course.

This resort is fully booked nearly every weekend and has lost it's exclusivity. It caters for the average gambler seeking an above average gambling experience.

An alternative would be Suncoast and Ushaka in Durban.

We won't return to the Wild Coast Sun Resort
