Stayed at the Selge hotel for one week from the 19th-26th August '08 with my Mum. The hotel isn't fabulous but it isn't terrible either! We just had a few little niggly problems which I'll get to!!
We arrived at the hotel about 3ish in the afternoon, while waiting to be checked in we were offered a drink (the reception staff are lovely!) After being quicky checked in we were shown up to our room (Number 215) My mum's suitcase was carried up the one flight of stairs for her by one of the girls from reception - I carried my own but it wasn't too bad up just one flight, might have been a problem if we'd been further up!!We decided to get the air conditioning and a safety deposit box for a week. £20 for the air conditioning and just £7 for a safe for the week. Pretty good value we thought and you DEFINATELY need the air conditioning in the Mid August heat!!First impressions of the room were ok, we had a pool view which was nice. The room consisted of 2 single beds, a wardrobe, vanity desk with a mirror and 2 bedside cabinets. Plenty of storage space for us. The bathroom is quite small but big enough with a shower cubicle. Now to the first niggly problem! The towels in our room, although displayed nicely on our beds were stained and quite dirty looking. They were clearly old as they were no longer white they had that greyish tinge!!!Im pretty sure they were clean though. It seemed though that we didn't have our towels changed once through the week, I heard a few other hotel guests complaining of the same. The room, although cleaned every day had dirty marks on the walls and the shower was also a bit scummy. It didn't bother us massivley though.
The pool area is nice enough, plenty of sunbeds to go around and no fight to get one in the morning!! They say when you check in not to bring your own food or drinks to the pool but we and plenty others seemed to be doing it anyway with no problems!! A small bottle of water from the bar was 1 lira a large 2 lira, small fizzy drinks, coke, fanta etc were 2 lira and a large 4 lira. They could definately do with selling ice creams around the pool.
Down to the food. We stayed bed and breakfast. The breakfast was buffet style and consisted of Salami, 2 types of cheese, olives, cucumber, tomatoes, bread and Melon. There was also Jam and butter. You could also have tea, coffee or juice. We didn't buy any meals from the restaurant so can't comment on that but the prices seemed reasonable. With regards to being worried about running up tabs and being over charged etc, JUST PAY FOR THINGS AS YOU GO!We did this and they had no problems with it!
I know in previous reviews people have complained about the amount of hassle you get from the staff to go to their 'special nights' but we didn't experience anything as bad as we were expecting. Yes we did get asked a few times if we were going to the Turkish night etc but we just said we had plans and they left it at that. We did get stopped on our way out of the hotel on our first night and asked where we were going but we just said for a walk around and it got left at that. So yes you do get hassle but be firm and they leave you alone! They did with us at least!!
Now to the biggest main problem we had with this hotel (which actually might be a pro rather than a con with some people!) It is pretty far away from the centre of Side. You can walk it (which we did once) it took us about half an hour but it was HOT!Just come out ot the hotel and turn right and just keep walking! When you get to the ruins you're nearly there!!Or you can catch a dolmus from outside the hotel to the bus station (where there is a market) for just 1 Lira then catch the little Train/Tractor thing past the ruins into Side which cost 75 each. We tended to walk to the bus station then caught the train the rest of the way-it's definately an experience not to be missed!!
There are several restaurants down the street next to the hotel and a supermarket and a couple of other shops.
We also had a few power cuts during our week, I don't know what is wrong with the electricity at this place! It didn't cause massive problems though and it was back on after a few minutes.
So I'd say this Hotel isn't the best I've stayed in but it could be worse. The only massive problem we had with it was with the location. I would go back to Side but not to this hotel.
