“Massive gorgeous room, uncomfortable location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

In terms of proximity to the train station, this is a very good hotel. Depending on which way you exit the train station this hotel is only a 5 minute walk. (Head towards the bus station). However, as in all big cities the area surrounding the train station (midi) is poor, with run down shops and litter. I was part of a group of three young women and we did feel somewhat intimidated by the men in the area, especially walking into Brussels centre in early evening. We made the decision to get a taxi back at nightfall (10 euros). It wasn't threatening as such, but we attracted a lot of stares as every bar on the way into brussels was heaving with men. Once you get into to the grand place there is no such problem.

We stayed in Ustel 1 and had a very large room, almost a suite with three beds, a sofa, dressing table and an additional table. Check in was smooth if a little mechanical. Clean room, clean bathroom, comfy beds and flat screen TV and free wifi. Certainly the largest hotel room I've stayed in in Europe. I would stay here again if this standard of room could be guarenteed (reading other reviews I'm not sure how consistent the rooms are). And I'd feel more comfortable navigating my way to the hotel in the company of a male companion. Three girls with suitcases attracted too much uncomfortable attention which is a shame as otherwise this hotel would be very pleasant.

stayed here with a friend for 2 nights . less than 10 minutes walk from brussels midi station but i would,nt recommend walking back to hotel late at night and it was a bit unnerving. the area between the station and the hotel housed many homeless people on benchs , the streets smelt of urine and it was ethnically diverse with tired looking bars with a lot of men sitting outside staring at any female passersby . unfortunatly there was no eating or drinking options around the hotel so one had to travel . to the left of the station there were some bars and restaurants which were just ok but choice was limited . we asked for twin room on booking but were given a double on the 6th floor which had no lift after the first few floors , that room was ok with a big enough bathroom and tv but we asked reception to move us to a twin which was much smaller , with decor that needed updating and aircon that didnt work . reception staff consisted of one man who was helpfull but overwhelmed with lots of people checkin in at the same time with some also lodging complaints about their rooms.we did,nt bother complaining any more since we used the room only for sleeping and showering, shower was ok . beds were surprisingly comfortable. breakfast was ok with basic continental options in a help yourself, buffet style. would,nt stay here again from a safety at night point of view and the fact that there are no eating or drinking options suitable nearby , except for one very fancy restaurant next door which was not in our price range ....definatley not for solo or female only travellers , even in a group and totally unsuitable for families with young children or babies .

Just the one night here. The refurbished downstairs lobby area is nice but my room seemed tired. Large windows looked out onto a dirty backyard and the curtains didn't shut properly. Had to move a table to find a plug for phone charger. However, bed and bathroom were clean, and lots of hot water for a shower.
Breakfast advertised as from 7am, but some setting up was still going on at 7.20am when we left. No hot items available but coffee was nice.
The area around the hotel has always been where people of North African origins have settled, but it seems to have exploded in recent years. I've never been troubled but could see it being more of a problem for female visitors.
If more refurbishment continues, then this Floris could be worth another look. But at the moment, I wouldn't rush back.

Stayed here with my family for 1 night. We had two rooms for my wife and I and our three kids. The triple room had no air con, tv didn't work and a huge window which opened so wide that we couldn't leave it open for fear of one of the kids doing a high dive. We were on the fifth floor but the lift only went to the 4th? No parking as there was a large fair right outside. The area seems to be the capital of the Brussels homeless people. Best avoided

I stayed here with my sister for a week long trip because we wanted to explore Belgium. The hotel itself wasn't bad. The rooms were clean, the staff were fine and the breakfast was alright - not a huge amount of choice but decent. You got what you paid for basically, don't go expecting it'll be five star. For me though the issue was the surrounding area of the hotel. It was a very rough and rundown area of Brussels. It was only good in terms of being close to the gare du midi station (5/10 minute walk) which was convenient. The area around it though was horrible, unclean and I felt unsafe walking around. Its very male dominated meaning a lot of prolonged stares. As young people we would have liked to go out for a few drinks at night in the city but because of the area we didn't. It just felt unsafe and uncomfortable. I definitely wouldn't return here, I'd pay more for a hotel in a nicer area of Brussels. This place wasn't nice at all, I'd not recommend it to anyone.

Stayed monday and thursday night at Floris Ustel, good location 5 mins from Brussells midi train station and a steady walk from all other sights, lots of bars and restaurants around, you will never go hungry in Brussels. Lovely room, air con so no problem with noise, a good night's sleep followed by an excellent selection at breakfast, to set you up for the day's sightseeing ahead. More Chocolate and Lace shops than you can shake a stick at, bit dissapointed at the Manequin p-s but the Grand Square more than makes up for that. Would recomend the Carbonade (Belgium beef stew cooked in beer, served with stoempe mash and veg mixture, and the Flemish rabbit stew) washed down with a Belgium Blond on Blond....

Room Tip: What we saw they all looked good to us
