“Swiss Not So Grand (Faulty Towers)”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

Arrived to a room that stank of smoke with smoke discoloured curtains, dirty sink and hideous views of a run down unit building next door. After asking to be moved to another room on the smoke yellowed phone we were taken to a room with a double bed (had booked a king) and a missing TV. When we rang and asked for another room the clearly upset manager said she had no more rooms. If we were prepared to wait they would see what they could do. After another 20 minutes and now closer to 45 minutes since checking in we were shown to an "acceptable" room. The balcony of which still had empty alcohol bottles and cigarette butts on it. The nice young man who moved us twice was very apologetic and brought a complementary bottle of wine to our room. That night at around 3.00am the lights in our room came on by themselves. First in one room and then in another (dodgy wiring or ghosts?). Noises from revellers in the streets below made sleeping difficult as did the early Sunday morning Garbage truck noises. In the morning only one of the two main lifts were working on the way to breakfast. The hot breakfast was cold, including the scrambled eggs that were just replenished from the kitchen as we arrived. After breakfast, on the way back to the room, we used the now supposedly fixed lift. Needless to say, the lift broke down and we had to ring the alarm to be rescued. Leaving the hotel we had to ring reception to escape from the car park as the boom gate ticket machine had broken down. It is obvious that the building is slated for redevelopment with huge signs advertising the makeover to luxury apartments. So no money presently being spent on paint, furnishings, curtains, maintenance and cleaning. Overall, very shabby, grubby and run down. On arrival home we discovered an unexplained extra $50 deduction by the hotel on our credit card. Incidentals or a voluntary contribution to building maintenance costs? Plus a 1.5% levy for the convenience of using our credit card. What was supposed to be a special weekend with our daughter become a running joke. We could not help but make repeated comparisons to Faulty Towers. Pathetic, pretentious, overpriced and never ever to be repeated. Basil!!!!

Hi Feebs4,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay.

I do apologise that you did not enjoy your stay at the Swiss-Grand and felt so strongly about the condition of the hotel. Please contact me directly on generalmanager@swissgrand.com.au to discuss these matters further.

Also please note that the $50 'deduction' on your credit card was a pre-authorisation that is a standard hotel procedure. Your card was not charged for that amount.

Kind regards,

We stayed at the Swiss Grand Resort for our 10 year wedding anniversary.

The weather was perfect which meant for an ideal stay. The rooms were dated, although seeing as Bondi has so much to offer it was fine.

Fab restaurants, great service and a wonderful stay to remember.

The lovely Swiss Grand is not as young as it used to be, but the location and wonderful staff made our stay very pleasant. Firstly, when we checked in we were told that we had been upgraded to a superior room and being on the 4th floor (5 floors) the view over Bondi Beach was breathtaking. Plus it was my birthday, so they sent up a lovely bottle of wine to enjoy on our balcony. A great nights sleep on very comfy beds, welcomed us to an amazing breakfast choice in the Seaspray Restaurant. Finally as we went to check out, the friendly staff told me that the parking was on the Swiss Grand. Everything went right for us and i wouldn't expect these things all the time, but the little unexpected bonuses are always the nicest.

Never again.
Great location, but greatly overpriced and tired.

Alas, all that remains of a once grandiose property is the name.

It seems as if they have partitioned off some of the building for conversion to up market residential apartmernts and what remains of the hotel is being let run down.
The pool and spa area was too dirty to contemplate a swim.

The rooms were OK but not was I was expecting given the price I paid - I thought I was paying for a high standard room in a great property in a great location - but only the beach lived up to expectations.

First we were put in an ocean view room, sweet right? It was until I open the drapes to walk out on the balcony and saw this huge advertisement screen announcing they are converting the hotel into condos going up the whole side of the hotel blocking our view, next came the 2nd floor deck parties that the hotel rents out to clubs blaring their deep bass music extremely loud until 2am every night. Out of 6 nights I maybe slept 3 nights. Next comes the musty mildew smell in the hallways and rooms, shower stall glass enclosures that are coming apart preventing the door from closing. My in-laws had to ask the front desk to make sure housekeeping changed the sheets because they haven't been changed in 4 days!!! Sheets were marked each day to verify this. This is why after leaving I'll be consulting a doctor because we all have what looks like bedbug bites on our hands, arms and ankles. It discusses me just to write this. I work for United Airlines and this hotel will be on the Do Not Stay List for sure. Please do not stay. Keep looking, they have better hotels on the same Bondi Beach. Signed, Steven Denver, Colorado

My 3 night stay at The Swiss Grand Hotel was nothing but the best. The staff were lovely , the room was amazing (King Ocean View ) . The view from the balconly was breath taking. I had read a few bad reviews about this hotel and was a little hesitant in booking , but im sure glad we decided to stay there. I could not fault our room at all, tidy clean and spacious. Room service was fantastic and quick. The gym and the lap pool was great. Plenty of restuarants and cafes to chose from within the hotel and out on the street. Id love to stay there again as I could not faul this hotel at all. Would glady give this hotel a 5 star rating.
