“Could do better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2012

I went to the Barcelo Punta Umbria Mar with a singles group. The hotel is wonderfully well situated with just a short walk through sand dunes to the superb 7 km beach which was only crowded at the weekend. The swimming pool was excellent with an attendant usually present. My room was comfortable and clean but twice I had to call for an engineer to open the safe which annoyingly cost about 25 Euros. My room faced the morning sun so it quickly became very hot every day. The bar service was often slow with queues sometimes because only one person seemed to be serving. The Reception was also often undermanned causing queues All the meals were served as buffets which may have saved staffing costs but was not good for the food. Although we were on an all inclusive deal a group of us ate out on two evenings.

Room Tip: Ask for a west facing room if you want to avoid the hot morning sun

Went with Saga on an all inclusive 2 resort holiday. The hotel had the WOW factor on arrival, rooms excellent size with a setee and a TV which received BBC programmes, great for catching up with the world. The downside of this hotel was the sunbeds. There were very clear instructions that you were not to leave your towels on the sunbeds unattended for 30 minutes or more. 4 hours late mainly the Spanish guests then return. The staff did not seem to want to remove the towels, when they advised us to do this, the Spanish returned and one almighty row erupted . The food was good, service as others have said was quite poor, with the staff not wishing to smile and sometimes serve the locals before the English. Entertainment great, location fantastic for a beach holiday.

Room Tip: I would choose an outer facing room, as the entertainment might keep pool views aware for early slee...

Nice hotel with well kept gardens and pool area. Lots of clean sunbeds, and comfy seating outside.
Maid sevice every day, shame a dirty ash-tray remained on my balcony from previous guest all week. Room clean and nice bathroom, with bath as well as shower. No luggage rack, [broken] very cold tiled flooring, no rug.
Hotel right on the lovely beach, beach/pool towels available for a deposit. Watch out for jelly fish on the beach, too cold for sea swimming during my visit.
Staff in bar and dining room miserable and grumpy, we were all-inclusive, local drinks included were low quality, but the buffet was really bad.

Salads were tired and covered in mayonaise. Veg mostly frozen, and soggy. My eyes lit - up one day at the sight of fried aubergine! but the middle was raw! Very little protein, other than fried belly-pork, and fish with tons of bones. Fresh fruit was always covered in flies.
Only at the weekend did the food improve, coinciding with the arrival of lots of Spanish guests, only to revert back to rubbish when they left!

The poor food and unhelpful staff are in stark contrast to the actual hotel and beach location.
I booked reflexology at the spa which turned out to be an overpriced, short ,foot-massage.
I would not visit this hotel again.

Room Tip: I paid an extra £80 for a sea-veiw balcony room, these are quieter and more comfortable.

Staff in the restaurent and bar extremely rude.On an all inclusive basis but was unable to get a cappucunno coffeee . Supplied with 2 small bottles of water on arrival which then had to filled from a machine which was so slow. Food in the restaurant was always luke warm. The same sweets for lunch as dinner. A nice hotel spoilt by the attitude of the staff.

I was booked into this hotel by a travel company on a 'fully inclusive' basis. The staff were, pleasant and, in the main, efficient. Food was all 'buffet style' and generally good and plentiful. The rooms of the hotel were spacious and the design pleasing to the eye, flanked as it was by tower blocks. Everything was clean and presentable. My only small niggle was that some of the bar staff chatted very loudly together while they were serving customers which came across as un-professional.

Room Tip: After arriving I thought it may have been better to chose a room with a balcony as my room faced the...

I hate giving poor reports on hotels but I have just returned from 2 nights at this hotel and it was very very poor. The main problem was the staff. I don’t care how impressive a hotel is if the staff are not interested it is disappointing.

The reception staff were unhelpful and uninterested. The restaurant staff were poor and uninterested.

I stay in hotels on numerous occasions and I cannot recall being asked to pay to park in the hotel grounds!! 10€ a day!

We have just recently had 11 nights at a Riu hotel in Morocco, the staff from this hotel should go and experience what service is about.

I expect all Barcelo hotels are of the same poor standards, so if you can avoid

Room Tip: My tip is do not bother going in the first place

terrific location right on the beach - sunsets to die for as you get the sun reflecting onto the wet sun as it goes down so you get 2 sunsets for the price of mun. and what sands - beautiful. hotel is stunning. designed to blend in with the natural surroundings it is fabulous. rooms overlooking the sand dunes are hte best for my money - quietest and still get sea views and dunes too. the nature walk through the sand dunes is overrated as it follows the road but you do get lovely birds. rooms are very clean, huge, really pretty curtains, wonderful beds - they have a foam topper which makes them really comfortable - and good size. black out curtains. flat screen tv. great shower. 10 out of 10 for rooms. staff really friendly - even reception tries a half hearted smile now and then. food average - but i also find spanish food average. for instance salad is unimaginative, cheese is really boring, hot dishes lack herba/spices etc. bread great though and fresh grapefruit and yoghurt for breakfast so good points too. and for dinner i could always find something i liked. walk along the beach to punta umbria village - its very real and has great coffee shops and fresh local fish, especially local prawns, as soon as the fishing boats return. Donana national park is a must for the birds in spring of course - even if you are not a bird watcher you will still love a day out there. beware getting confused with the 2 other barcelo sites within a stones throw - they are on the other side of the road not on the beach. not so nice at all.

Room Tip: overlooking the dunes are quieter and still have sea views
