We feel very lucky to have found the Mariposa Jungle Lodge, which was our base camp for experiencing the myriad outdoor adventures and Mayan ruins accessible in the Cayo area. Our luck started with findiing it at all, given that it is an intimate and isolated jungle lodge, with a total of six individual cabanas, and perfectly located for us near the entrance to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Our luck continued when we found the highest level of personal service from the moment we sent an e-mail enquiry, through our adventures with their guide Damian, our time in the main lodge including the terrific meals and service from Nelmarie, right through to the moment we left with a friendly farewell at the lodge doors with the proprietress and new friend, Sharyn Brinker.
Our recommendation - go. Don't miss out on experiencing this part of Belize, and do it while perfectly located for adventure with Mariposa's small staff of committed caring hostess, guides, and lodge servers. The cabanas exceeded our expectations, with each being spacious, exotic, thach-roofed, high-end, and fully serviced private suites - with king size canopy bed, sitting area, bathroom, and sunroom with hammock surrounded by the jungle and nature. Even if you have the usual Belize beach holiday planned, take a couple days to experience somethiing different, you will be amazed at how much adventure you can fit in and how enjoyable your time will be at the jungle lodge with such friendly personal service, relaxed setting and comfortable cabanas.
To provide more detail, we planned this trip as a side trip from a beach holiday on the Placencia peninsula. Our main destination was the major Mayan arcaelogical site at Caracol. The Mariposa Jungle Lodge is in the perfect location to experience all of the adventure accessible in and through the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve - including nature and bird watching, exploring caves, visiting and swimming in waterfalls, enjoying forests and central american jungle, and of course seeing Mayan archaelogical sites including Caracol. Make no mistake about the experience you are setting out on. This is no resort town. It is isolated, away from San Ignatio and night life, and with some rough roads thrown in. But that is why it should be part of your Belize experience.
Mariposa has two brothers as their private guides. Damian was our guide for several adventures and always providing personal services to just our group (4 travelling companions), not in big groups. We explored and climbed through Caracol (a Mayan site which had 35,000 buildings including many recovered and significant pyramids, the tallest of which is still the tallest building in Belize), walked through the Rio Frio Cave, canoed into the Barton Creek Cave, visited the Green Hills Butterfly Farm, viewed the Rio On Pools waterfall, hiked to and swam in the scenic Big Rock Falls, travelled through the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. And we experienced them all with the friendly and knowledgeable guiding by Damian who provided insight into the sites through his training and knowledge of the area and of Mayan culture and history. Mariposa provided the picnic lunches and snacks, and their private guide provided terrific value for unforgettable exeriences. All of our adventures were outstanding and memorable, and Caracol is amazing and worth the trip. At each days end Sharyn personally welcomed us back to the bar and restaurant in the Lodge where we shared our adventures and learned more about the area. After theme night dinners, we also visited in the sitting rooms in the lodge, sharing drinks and travel stories with Sharyn and each other. And at days end we enjoyed the very comfortable quiet cabanas, with the restful sounds and scents of the Belizean jungle. It was definitely a worthwile travel experience.
I can confirm that we recommend this location, and can assure you that we are doing that with the full intent of staying at Mariposa again ourselves for our continuing adventures in Cayo.
