“Wrong location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014

Amaloh Boutique has the potential to be a wonderful place to stay. It has beautiful rooms and delicious food and of course the wonderful Sri Lankan climate.
As it is new the landscaping is definitely immature so the garden feels a bit sparse and exposed, more natural shade would be more inviting - plus the LED lights up the palm trees weren't very classy!
In the photos on the website the beach just at the end of the garden looks wonderful and the sea looks really clear, however when we were there the water was so high there was no beach... you walked down the steps and could swim straight from the steps but it just wasn't the same, maybe we were just unlucky with the high water.
The service was sometimes not quite what we had come to expect from that sort of price tag - the first night we had big bath towels but no bath mat or hand towels, the 2nd night just 2 hand towels then the 3rd night all 3?
The chef is clearly very talented and the food was delicious, however there aren't menus to choose from, the chef talks to you every day about what food you like and what you would like for dinner - while this sounds great, actually I don't really want to have to decide, I have to think up whats for supper every other day of the year, and if you've been out all day, you just get back to your room to relax then you get a phone call asking you to come down and discuss dinner - quite irratating.
Even though most of those problems can be fixed the fact that it's a beach hotel with no beach is a problem.
One plus side - as it was all new the air conditioning units were also new so pretty quiet!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for posting a constructive feedback on Tripadvisor which give us an opportunity to correct ourselves in order to serve our future guests even better.

We agree with your comment on the Garden and the new trees we have planted might take some time to give shade and we have kept the openness of the garden on purpose and your personal opinion is understood and well received.

The sea can be rough on some days and it is not the case in most of the times and we advise our guests to use the Polhena white beach which is mere 150 m from us on rough days.

Housekeeping department has been alerted and clearly there must have been a mistake by them to not to make available all three types of towels in your room and the bath mat on all three days.

Our service has been designed to cater to Guests individual preference and we apologise if this was not to your liking. This allows us to provide our guests with the meals cooked using the freshest ingredients bought on the same day and NOT to serve the precooked dishes. However I will address the issue of calling your room to come down to discuss the Dinner as this is not our standard practice.

We hope that you will visit us again in the future and allow us to serve you better.

Thank you again for your constructive feedback

I booked this hotel before any reviews being published as it is so new and therefore was a bit nervous of what we would get ourselves into but we were not disappointed!
This place is not on the cheap side but it is worth every penny!
We were welcomed with an amazing fresh passion fruit juice by the lovely team Suranga, Sanath and Dulag and showed to our room which was huge, had its own private little garden and the best of it all was the shower and bath tub!
The team is really attentionate to your every need and they are so pleasant to talk to.
The garden, pool, subtile decor and sun beds overlooking the sea (granted it is not a place were you can swim and relax by the beach) just made it perfect to chill out in paradise.
The best of it all was dinner and breakfast when the perfect chef customises his meals for the guests. It was such a nice change from 1 week of hotel buffet for breakfast and dinner! The chef lived in Italy for over 10 years and is really cooking some fine food for his guest.
We had the best time ever there, Amaloh do not change anything!

Truly stunning bedroom with amazing outside shower. Very tastefully done. Very very clean which is always nice. It's not in Mirissa as advertised which is misleading as it's not in walking distance to anything. No beach by the hotel. More staff than guests. We found the food to be very expensive for what you get, although our lunch was good. Lovely huge swimming pool. Such a shame as the rooms are 5 stars just wish I could say the same about everything else.

Dear Guest,

We welcome all the comments positive or negative which helps us in improving our services.

It was pleasure to understand your liking of the property and surrounding (and the pool). The property actually borders to a bay and protected by a reef few hundred meters away from the shore. This allows our guests to do sea kayaking (paddle to the island on the sea), snorkeling etc.

As for the cost of food, we customize the meals according to our guests needs and the pricing is done accordingly. Cost of our Dinner has an average of USD 30 per person and this is a four course menu and probably the best fine dining experience in the area. And for guests who wishes for a lighter meal the costs are as low as USD 15 per person and the lunch menu prices start from as low as USD 6. Our chefs go to the markets on daily basis to buy the freshest fish, meat and vegetables and put a lot of effort in providing the best dining experience.

We have clearly mentioned our address in all the media as Polhena, Matara (6 km from Mirissa and a 15 min tuk tuk ride will get you there) and it is clearly shown on google maps. The famous Polhena beach (white beach as locals call it) is 400 m to our right and the Matara town is 1 km from where we are. And the Turtle point in Madiha, considered one of the best surfing spots in SL is a mere 1.5 km from us.

We thank you again for your sincere view of Amaloh and hope to host you again in the future and might be able to assist better in making your stay with us more pleasurable.

Thanks and best regards

We found this place by accident. Desperate of not finding a good place in Mirissa, we "walked" in to this one on internet/google. We wish we had found this earlier, and we wish we would have known it was so good. (We had planned other hotel in next city, Galle.

Amaloh is new, it has class/style, its wonderful decorated, beautiful garden and pool, super rooms and bath rooms, and... a great chef (Sasika) and staff... The chef informs about your whishes and gets it all at the market, fresh. Fish or meat.

We have collected the names:
Sanath, the bartender: Probably the best coffee maker in town (we have teached him. Check if the espresso machine is switched on).

Dulaj, restaurant: at your service, daytime and evening. Head of music (ask him to tune in on Sun FM)
Suranga, restaurant: same as Dulaj. Great team, always laughing

All staff members are ready for a next step and probably will do soon. The are a team, understands the needs of a guest, without over reacting (slimy).

The owner is a business man in Colombo and decided to start this place, with his wife. One of them has taste: this should be full booked 365 days a year and will soon be. Keep the price in shape, and the guests will follow.

5 star hotels should eat their heart out. Take a visit here and see what people want.

Only minus: not really easy to swim in the sea.

3 nights might have been 6 if we knew this all...

My girlfriend and I stayed at amaloh for 4 nights, and from the moment we arrived we were blown away by the level of service provided by the staff. As there are only 7 rooms, it feels like a very personalized service and there is always someone there if you need anything.

The rooms themselves were big and spacious with a super comfortable king size bed. I also loved the outdoor shower! The main building is beautifully finished in the Dutch colonial style, and is elegantly and tastefully fitted out. The pool is great, and leads out onto the big open area which is right on the beachfront. The kayaks are a nice touch and we enjoyed a fun morning paddling around in the bay.

All these things make amaloh a great place to stay, however, the real trump card is the quality of the meals produced by head chef, sashika. Using local seafood, he produced an astonishing variety of meals which need to be tasted to appreciate how good they are!

I would highly recommend amaloh boutique to anyone looking for a luxurious and exclusive hotel on the southern coast of Sri Lanka.

The Amaloh is a brand new (hence it's few reviews), stylish hotel with a contemporary design (and a nudge to the old colonial architecture). Very relaxed atmosphere, great apartments/rooms with beautiful (!) high wooden ceilings, outside shower and bath, views and access to the sea (right outside hotel it's a bit rocky, but great for snorkeling, and all gear is supplied by the hotel... )

Polhena beach (10 min walk) is the closest sandy beach, beautiful, quiet and great for snorkeling and Mirissa Beach, which is really beautiful, although bit busier, with great waves to play with, is just a 10 min ride with a Tuk-Tuk.

The team (we got to know Dulag, Sanath and Suranga) at Amaloh is really friendly, warm and super efficient..

But the most amazing thing that really stands out is the food! If you are a foodie, and enjoy to go to the odd Michelin star restaurant - you will absolutely love staying at this hotel! I'm sure chef Sashika Nirman Ranatunga and his wife (both only recently moved back to Sri Lanka after a 10 year stint as chefs in Italy) will build a name for themselves very soon! Every day we could ask for an entirely personalised dinner - and in the evening a delicious surprise would be served.. Very sophisticated flavours and textures: starters, mains and deserts all as interesting: We hope they'll write a cook book!

The only thing less positive (which I'm sure they'll address in the coming months) is the lack of WIFI in the rooms. There is good WIFI in the lobby, but it has a very small reach, so you pretty much have to stand right next to the router to get access... In a hotel of this quality I really would expect wifi in each room...

Other than that, strongly recommended!

Room Tip: We got one of the little apartments right next to the central lobby 'with ocean views' which...

Hi,

Thank you so much for the time taken to review the property and services we offered. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the stay at Amaloh and hope to see you again.

Also we will address the issue of Wi-Fi and hopefully will extend the service to the rooms before end of February as well. The lack of 4G coverage has caused us some issues in the past and the service provider is working on it. And thanks again for bringing that to our notice.

Best regards
Chamara
