Owner description: Discover Blair Castle and go on a journey into the fascinating past of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl. Unique amongst Scottish castles, the story here leads you from Mary Queen of Scot's visit to the Civil War, and from the Jacobite cause to Queen Victoria's famous stay which led to the creation of Europe's only surviving private army, the Atholl Highlanders. Over 700 years of Scottish history are on display across 30 rooms. Highlights of the castle tour include the Baronial Entrance Hall, featuring weapons used at the Battle of Culloden; the classic Georgian styling of the Picture Staircase; the grandeur of the State Dining Room and Drawing Room; and the magnificent Ballroom, bedecked in hundreds of antlers. The Castle sits at the hub of a breathtaking historic landscape and the gardens and grounds feature a 9 acre walled garden, a peaceful wooded grove, a ruined kirk, a red deer park and a whimsical Gothic folly.

“Blair Castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

As we were staying in the Village of Blair Atholl, then the visit to the castle was a must. Very charming place in beautiful scenery. The rooms, of which there were 30 to view, were very interesting and well worth looking at. The grounds are very extensive but well worth visiting.

“Lovely Grounds and Gardens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

Only paid to see the gardens, as it was too lovely a day to spend inside. The grounds surrounding the castle are set in lovely countryside. The driveway is really impressive. The billboards outside the castle were tacky. The formal gardens, though past their peak, were still pretty. It's a big place...plan on at least a couple hours just to see the gardens.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed your afternoon in the castle gardens. At this time of year, the gardens aren't quite in full bloom but the leaves on the trees are changing colours and it's a great time to see the transformation from summer to autumn. I'm afraid I'm not sure which billboards outside the castle you are referring to. There are billboards outside the main entrance but they only state the prices and opening times.

“More Museum than Country Home”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

The Castle is filled with many interesting things but they are all displayed in a messy way. Place is run down and charmless. You are met by a Caravan Park when you enter the grounds that are filled with billboards. Least interesting place we went to!

Thank you for your review. I will make sure to feedback your comments at the next Operations Meeting. The objects are laid out in the castle just as they were when the family lived here. Some smaller rooms are used for displaying more historic objects, photographs and added information about the family, in order to give visitors even more insight into the past 700 years at Blair Castle. It's the detail that the tour goes into that makes it so popular, with over 30 rooms on full display. The main driveway is separate to the adjacent caravan park and does not display any of the Caravan Park's information boards.

“Beautiful spot -- don't miss the gardens!!!!”

We had such a beautiful day in Scotland exploring this home and their magical gardens -- if you arrive at the right time, you'll even get to hear a piper out front!

Thank you for your review. I'm glad to hear you had a lovely day in the garden, listening to the piper. Most visitors can catch him playing as he's on the forecourt every day on the hour between 11am-3pm for 15 minutes.

“...another fairytale castle”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

Take your time and view the rooms and all the history they have to offer - if you're not part of a tour group you can self tour the castle with relative ease as there are guide sheets in each room for you to read and learn more. The rooms are stunning and they give you a little peek at what life was like!
If you're not travelling as part of a tour group, you may find that you get caught up amongst them, which has its own pro's and cons. Pro's - you get a free guided tour... con - you can't enjoy the castle without being surrounded.
You can also enjoy a walk around the Hercules Garden, although I didn't go during the summer there was still some beautiful flowers to be seen. There are also walks which take you round the site which are gorgeous.

Restaurant - the food to some may seem expensive however when it came to the meals I think you definately get a good portion size, in fact I could have quite easily shared mine.

A word or warning to those who are backpacking... when I arrived on site with a mini back pack I was told that I couldn't take it in, in addition there is also no photography (with the exception of one room)... With regards to your backpack you're offered a place to leave your bag.. just remember to collect it at the end, alternatively if you're in a car leave the bag in it. What was disappointing was that although I was told these things I witnessed a tour group which allowed their members to come in with mini rucksacks/bags of similar size and they took pictures - and it didn't appear that a word was even said to them.

Thank you for your review. I'm glad you enjoyed your tour around the castle. When there's a tour in, we recommend you hang back for 5 minutes to let the tour group pass you by. They move pretty quickly and then you can enjoy the rooms at your own pace. The reason we ask people with larger backpacks to leave them at the beginning of the tour is so objects aren't accidentally knocked over. This is usually very popular with visitors as they can enjoy the tour without a heavy load. Of course, they are locked up very securely and you can collect them when you're back downstairs.
