“Not that exciting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

Maybe I'm a little spoiled by partially ruined castles like Kerak Castle in Jordan, but this castle was just OK. The tram going up was pretty slow, and one can walk up pretty quickly. The castle itself looks nice, but inside there weren't too many areas that we can explore. Most of the ruined places were roped off. The ones that were renovated were just ok, no different than many other renovated castles in the world. I was somewhat disappointed with this visit.

“A very characteristic fortress”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

You will be surprised when entering this fortress. Nice15 minute walk to get uphill. Not extravagant but well renovated and splendid views of Bugeci and Craiolui mountains around. Not very touristic yet but worthwhile when you make a trip through the area around Brasov and want to get a feel of the strategic position of the county.

“must see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

a very nice restaurated fortress, but still lot to do there from authorities ... still dusty... but very nice young tour guides, explaning very good the sory of the fortress. The panorama - spectacular, but if you want to eat something, better try in Brasov, at 15 km away; very nice souvenirs at the car parking, also lot of bio products to buy (fruit jams and syrups);

“Huge rambling fortress”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

Lots of tumble down alleys and rooms to ramble round. Very hot and dusty. Great panoramic view point at the top. New car parking facilities built since Lonely Planet write up. Follow the brown signs out of town and up the hill. Train up the hill from the car park, well worth the 4 lei. Free to come down.

Some souvenir shops in the fortress, but nothing going on when we were there. Could be a great family attraction with a bit more in the way of dressed up characters etc. Was just a very hot dusty slog round for us with 2 little kids in tow who just wanted an ice cream!

“Awe-inspiring view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

Rasnov was more ruins of an ancient village than a castle.It was home to the original occupants of Romania before the Roman invasion which destroyed the village.It was hard for me to rate this attraction because the climb up from the village was time consuming and exhausting.It was also dangerous due to the lack of a pedestrian trail or sidewalk and drivers who race up the hill with wanton disregard for the pedestrians.There is a pedestrian tram pulled by a tractor but this is only available from the castle parking lot to the main gate which is less than a mile. That too is an accident waiting to happen as they load unsafe numbers of persons on to the tram.The alternative however is spending 40-50 Euros for a tour bus.I rode the public transit bus to Rasnov for 89 cents US. You need not fear using public trains/buses from Brasov to the tourist sites. They may be uncomfortable at times but are safe and and save you 100 Euros or more if you see everything. From the Citadel the view of the valley below was magnificent and worth the climb. You are walking in the footsteps of ancient Dracu whose inhabitants resisted Roman conquest.Read the history before you go as there was no guided tour.Afterward I enjoyed refreshments from the various vendors whose faire was reasonable and delicious. Romanian vendors at these tourist sites do not have the "gotcha" mentality I have seen at tourist sites in the states.
