“Discovery Bar Hotel, St. James, Barbados”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

Myself and two friends went to the Discovery Bar Hotel for 8 nights over New Year. Not by choice as the original hotel we booked didn't have a room for us when we arrived.
I have never ever stayed in a hotel like this. The bathroom was dirty, no drawers to put your clothes in, telephone and tv didn't work. Very rarely could you get wifi, food was awful, one evening I ended up having cheese and crackers for my main meal and no I'm not a fussy eater.
We had to crawl under the table to put a plug into the socket to make a cup of tea.
Wouldn't go back again even if it was free.

Room Tip: A room with a sea view

We stayed here 10 days for our honeymoon in one of the Beachfront club rooms. It was one of the less expensive resorts on the island and although it needs some work, it was perfect for our needs. I got a little nervous after reading some of the reviews given just before we were about to go but figured it was too late to change hotels. I am so glad we didn't change. Our flight was delayed so we called ahead so someone could check us in and upon arrival they had a clerk waiting for us with 2 plates of sandwiches and fruit which we were so grateful. They knew we we would probably be hungry. The clubroom was in a seperate building, off the main hotel and it was roomy, clean, private, and everything worked including the A/C which seemed to be new. The bed was comfy and the comforter was luxurious. Because we had food in the room the previous night, we had ants but told the desk and by the time we got back from the beach they were gone. Having a balcony that looked right upon the water was awesome. Part of the beach here was rocks which was actually good as passerbys were not right outside the door. The beach was clean and sometimes we would get a local vendor selling their goods but if you told them no they usually moved on. We really liked having a bar and grill right out there as we got hungry being on the beach all day. We had the all-inclusive package but the food wasn't that great (My husband got sick one night) and there are way too many great restaurants around to eat mediocre food. Food is expensive in many restaurants but you can find bargains all over. (Don't miss Friday night's fish fry in Oistins!) There is lots of shopping close to the hotel and a grocery store in the mall a few blocks south across the street. The worst thing about the room were the dresser drawers. They were moldy and didn't really open and close but we hung everything in the closet or kept some other clothes in our suitcases. We didn't have a fridge in our room either. We met a few people who stay here every year and said it's not the best hotel but it's the best for the price. The room and hotel were perfect for us for the price especially because we didn't plan on staying in the room except to "sleep", shower, or change.

Room Tip: Try to get a beachfront room, especially if you can get in one of the clubrooms. They are very priva...

Stayed at the all inclusive property for a week, never saw the general manager, hardly any staff to handle the peak periods, i mean the food is good, service in the restaurant is remarkable. think their a new restaurant manager who is very helpful really and the service staff.

But the problems in the rooms is endless, toilet leaks, no phone service, shortage of towels, bathroom door don't shut, no wireless internet and the list goes on and on. one person on front desk, hotel flooded it is absolutely ridiculous.

The general manager apparently hides himself away from the guests and staff might i add. they just seems to be no general leadership.

Maintenance and housekeeping services is absolutely inappropriate. We spent to much pounds traveling to Barbados and its not worth it.

I wont recommend this hotel at all.

Structure and leadership is badly needed mates.

No entertainment, no water sports, bar closes at 11...

Go to Barbados, but don;t stay here at Discovery.

Room Tip: beach front is generally quieter, once no jet ski passing by

Just got back after spending 10 days over the xmas period, was very dissapointed with the food so dined out for a few nights the food at the next door at the Sandpiper hotel was not cheap but fantastic & beatiful surroundings ,sadly no effort was made at all to make xmas night a memorable one there was no music in the evening (they apologised said it was due to a admin error im not so sure), so if your looking for a wow factor (every other hotel we been to for xmas had fantastic xmas nights) this hotel is not for you if i went back again would definatly book xmas night out somewhere else as it was so boring and to quiet. Our room was clean but looking very very tired and in need of a major facelift as having stayed here a few time a approx 15 yrs ago it has really been neglected and people were having a few problems with one thing or another and some times the service was lax maybe due to not enough staff. That said great location most of the staff were friendly would i go again if i did would certainly not want to eat there, so I say get your finger out Rex why you are letting this once lovely hotel go so downhill and not spending some much needed money on it im at a loss to know quiet sad really.

Room Tip: Sea view 2nd level nice and quiet

We stayed at this hotel when my original choise was fully booked. The rooms were dreadful, staff nondescript, food not too good, poolk freezing - altogether a very disappointing holiday. There are much better all inclusive hotels in Barbados

We stayed at this hotel at the end of May, and the hotel was about to close for the slow summer season. So there were very few people staying at the hotel at that time.

The beach was very nice with white sand and clear blue waters. You could go for a walk along the beach for a distance. The location of the hotel is also good because you can walk to the small town, restaurants, bars, shopping, and historical sites.

The hotel overall was nice. It is a two story hotel with open air corridors. Each room has a balcony, and we had a nice ocean view. The grounds are well maintained with tropical plants and palms. There is one swimming pool which is fairly small, but it was never crowded when we were there. There was live music in the evenings, but the hotel was mostly quiet at night.

The food was good and fresh, but there was no buffet available and only one restaurant open for each meal. The choices were very limited, and they would sometimes run out of the most popular options. There were almost no vegetarian options. Breakfast was our favorite meal.

Overall, it is a good option for those looking for a good value in a good location. The all inclusive option is good because the restaurants in the area are expensive, but be aware that there is not much selection at the hotel restaurant.
