4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

My husband and I purchased a sixteen night stay at Henry Morgan through cheapcarribean.com. When we arrived, we were given our own private villa, because we had previously let the front desk know that we were celebrating our honeymoon. Our villa was beautiful, and the hotel staff greeted us with a very warm welcome.
The resort itself is an older resort (it is in need of a little TLC), but it is very quaint, comfortable, and safe. The pool is beautiful. The inside bar area has a few pool tables, a stage for the nightly live music and performances, and brightly colored couches. The outdoor bar area sits right on the beach, and sometimes, dinner is served out there.
All meals are served buffet style, but there are lots of choices. The food options usually include pasta, vegetables, beef, pork, or chicken, fish, rice, potatoes, fresh fruit, salads, and breads. The desserts are amazing! There were a few nights that we wanted a change of pace though, so we walked next door to The Argentinian Grill, where we had the best crab that I have ever tasted.
The beach in West Bay is AMAZING! The water is absolutely beautiful - crystal clear blue and warm. We played in the pool and in the ocean all day, every day. We couldn't get enough of it. The snorkeling and diving are some of the best in the world. There are sand fleas and mosquitos though, so take bug spray with 30% Deet in it for your feet, calves, and elbows. Get some Avon Skin So Soft Bug Repellent for the rest of your body. Wear it EVERY day.
The highlight of Henry Morgan is definitely the staff. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome. There is live music every night, so we spent every evening dancing with the staff to "Mr. Texas." We really felt like we were leaving our family and friends when we departed. We still miss them, and we can hardly wait to return!
There are fancier resorts in West Bay, but if you enjoy local flavor and a very welcoming environment, you will appreciate Henry Morgan. We plan to return to Henry Morgan again and again!

Let's be upfront: if you are going to Roatan, you had better be going for the marine life, first and foremost. If you are looking for a super-fancy, ultra exclusive, you may want to look elsewhere, but as far as top knotch snorkeling and diving goes, I think west bay will definitely exceed your expectations! ( if you are looking for fancy, I think there is a pretty nice place on the other side of the island). Being able to throw on our masks and fins and see turtles, rays and lobsters right in front of the hotels far outweighed any tiny issues we may have had with the HM!
Henry Morgan is by no means luxurious, but it was very clean, comfortable and certainly entertaining! The staff really want to make sure you are having a good time and there is no shortage of activities. The shows at night were always fun, and they organized bar crawls a couple of night as well for those who want to go into town and party it up. We were too tired from being in the water all day to take advantage of that option, but I'm sure they would have been a blast.
A word for people looking for peace and quiet- don't travel here over Easter! The resort went from people-sparse to jammed within the time that we were there, and because we were looking for some quiet time, we ended up leaving the resort on day trips o the latter part of our week there. A large population of the Latin American countries get their annual holidays over Easter, and thus are wanting to travel- Roatan being very popular for mainlanders especially. A huge dance club was built up on the bech and music was blasting from noon til the wee hours of the morning. Fortunately, our room was towards the rear of the resort, so it was quieter back there, but being in the lower level, you definitely heard the people above you. If sleep is an issue for you, request an upper floor.
The rooms were always clean, and we had no issues with maintenance as other people have mentioned. The staff were always friendly and the beverages plentiful, though not as good a selection as I was hoping for.
Food was edible, even really good at times. But having dining privileges at the Mayan Princess next door finitely was a plus. We ended up eating dinner more often than not. Especially once HM got crowded. I will spend the extra $ and stay at the Mayan when we went back to the island.
Notes:
Bug spray is a must!! We forgot one night and got eaten alive.
The onsite dive shop was spectacular! We did our certification with them and they were fantastic.
Definitely take the "bus" up to Anthony's Key to do the dolphin encounter.
Go have a glass of wine at the Vintage Pearl.
Go into town on a day when the cruise ships are NOT docked. You will have a much better time and get better prices.
mentally prepare yourself for a horrendous experience at the airport upon departure. It's all manual and takes forever! 4-5 hours factoring travel to the airport, exit tax, check-in with all your Sunwing charterers if you are flying from Toronto. Bring a snack ;)
All in all, an incredible island, we enjoyed every minute, but wanted to make sure you have realistic expectations when making your resort decision.
Cheers

What can I say?? Very nice, clean hotel. Rooms were comfy and menu was Ok. The beach is awesome!!! Beautiful white sand, crystal clear waters, you can even snorkel in the same hotel (I saw a couple of stingrays) People are kind and respectful, you can walk along the beach and find that is a peaceful pleasent place all around. We rented a car just to find that you can travel along the island in a DAY!! Find nice restaurants, souvenirs shops, and bars. I would Totally recommend this hotel. Would stay there again, no doubt!

Took family to Roatan and decided to stay at Henry Morgan based on internet. They are behind times, you had to fill out long paperwork by hand, none of the info entered in the internet when booked cannot be printed or used. After collecting all passport numbers, id's and all info from every person staying in each room, we finally get to the room. They hand you a remote for the TV and ONE key per room. So dont stay close to your roommate. TERRIBLE ROOM, the bathroom had visible mold, holes in the wall in shower, lighting is bad in the room, the air did not work, floor boards were loose. We complained 3 times and finally switched to another room which was just okay. The food was similar everyday, mixed drinks were weak. Sand flies galore and mosquitos in the still water around resort. They give you a card to get a beach towel, someone stole mine, they wanted to charge 5.00 per towel everyday. They third degree me if i was sure someone stole the towel card. The front desk workers are rude. The resort workers are very nice and that is the only good in this resort. We stayed at Infinity Bay prior to this trip and it is a 10 star +++.

Room Tip: Infinity Bay is the place to stay.

The Henry Morgan provided a much needed escape fron modern American society. It is a quaint resort - definately not 5 star. It provided a relaxed atmosphere - it may not be for the average American, but it was exactly what this American needed. We did not encounter sand flies; the food was good; the staff were friendly; and the beach is lovely but not too touristy; very good security. If you want Gulf Shores in Honduras, visit one of the other resorts further down the beach. I would definately stay here again and would recomend this resort to friends who do not mind staying in a resort that is not 5 star. I had a wonderful vacation and would recommend visiting in the off season. It was primarily quiet during our 7 night/8 day stay - not until the second to last day did we encounter a large group. I would recommend an upstairs room. fellow American travelers told us that they upgraded to a condo for only $100 more for the entire week. The rooms are lovely, although the walls are thin - we did not have neighbors until the end of the week, so it was not an issue for the entire stay. Thanks Henry Morgan and staff for a relaxing week.

Room Tip: Ask for upstairs room - beware - you have to carry your own luggage.

We stayed 7 nights & had a great trip to Roatan! Henry Morgan felt very "islandy" & laid back. The room was just as pictured- romantic tropical feel. I recommend requesting a top floor room. The workers were wonderful at all times. We felt very safe always. (we left our Nook Color & camera in our beach bag while we swam...nothing was ever touched. Our room was safe as well. We brought a luggage lock, but we do that anywhere. The beach guards are very mindful of who is sitting where & watches closely-not that it would have mattered anyway, because it was safe). And just to emphasize, we felt safe off the property anywhere we went as well. The resort is basic, but offers all you will need to enjoy the amazing beach and calm crystal clear waters with perfect snorkeling conditions every day. There are reefs you can swim to right off the beach (a few minute walk left down the beach to the end- AMAZING snorkeling!)...with a balance of soft sandy swimming areas as well. Paradise! Quite a variety of fish to look at everyday. (bring your own snorkel gear...you can rent it easily everywhere, but it's not included). The food is nothing exciting, but was good (to the negative nellies out there...no, we never got sick). When we were there, nearly all the other guests were Central Americans. We enjoyed this...felt more "authentic" than Mexican resorts..piled with Americans. We don't speak much spanish, & never had any trouble with communication. It is easy to take a water taxi ($3pp each way) to WestEnd to shop/go to resturaunts if desired, though there is enough of that within walking distance right on the beach. There is a dive shop at the resort to coordinate dives/snorkle excursions, though it really isn't needed since it's within walking distance. The resort is located perfectly!
I had heard about the "sand flies" prior to going- but didn't know much. Definitely bring Off! spray with DEET. It really isn't anything to obcess over. Just a minor adjustment of using bug spray while on a beach trip. The tiny little flies come out late-afternoon, but with a few sprits of bug spray, they are gone. We could relax & read on the beach easily. My husband got bit our first evening there (we forgot to spray!). They felt like a horse fly biting you, and would leave a 1cm red circle, but never did itch & the red mark would be gone in the morning. no biggie at all.

Room Tip: request a top floor "king suite"

If you are a picky American and don't enjoy culture other than yours, don't come here. If you are looking for a complete experience of the culture and hospitality of the island I reccommend Henry Morgan. The employees were amazing, friendly and incredibly kind. It's not like just going to a resort, the people who work there actually try to get to know you and share experiences. The service was great, the maids who clean the room did a great job and always left some artwork they did with the towels on the bed.

The FOOD was GREAT!!! I loved the food, everything was fresh and homemade. The entertainment they had every night was incredibly, fun and enjoyable. The last night we were there they had dinner on the beach with a fire show and a dance afterwards. If you are going to Roatan I would by far reccommend you stay at the Henry Morgan.
