Let's be upfront: if you are going to Roatan, you had better be going for the marine life, first and foremost. If you are looking for a super-fancy, ultra exclusive, you may want to look elsewhere, but as far as top knotch snorkeling and diving goes, I think west bay will definitely exceed your expectations! ( if you are looking for fancy, I think there is a pretty nice place on the other side of the island). Being able to throw on our masks and fins and see turtles, rays and lobsters right in front of the hotels far outweighed any tiny issues we may have had with the HM!
Henry Morgan is by no means luxurious, but it was very clean, comfortable and certainly entertaining! The staff really want to make sure you are having a good time and there is no shortage of activities. The shows at night were always fun, and they organized bar crawls a couple of night as well for those who want to go into town and party it up. We were too tired from being in the water all day to take advantage of that option, but I'm sure they would have been a blast.
A word for people looking for peace and quiet- don't travel here over Easter! The resort went from people-sparse to jammed within the time that we were there, and because we were looking for some quiet time, we ended up leaving the resort on day trips o the latter part of our week there. A large population of the Latin American countries get their annual holidays over Easter, and thus are wanting to travel- Roatan being very popular for mainlanders especially. A huge dance club was built up on the bech and music was blasting from noon til the wee hours of the morning. Fortunately, our room was towards the rear of the resort, so it was quieter back there, but being in the lower level, you definitely heard the people above you. If sleep is an issue for you, request an upper floor.
The rooms were always clean, and we had no issues with maintenance as other people have mentioned. The staff were always friendly and the beverages plentiful, though not as good a selection as I was hoping for.
Food was edible, even really good at times. But having dining privileges at the Mayan Princess next door finitely was a plus. We ended up eating dinner more often than not. Especially once HM got crowded. I will spend the extra $ and stay at the Mayan when we went back to the island.
Bug spray is a must!! We forgot one night and got eaten alive.
The onsite dive shop was spectacular! We did our certification with them and they were fantastic.
Definitely take the "bus" up to Anthony's Key to do the dolphin encounter.
Go have a glass of wine at the Vintage Pearl.
Go into town on a day when the cruise ships are NOT docked. You will have a much better time and get better prices.
mentally prepare yourself for a horrendous experience at the airport upon departure. It's all manual and takes forever! 4-5 hours factoring travel to the airport, exit tax, check-in with all your Sunwing charterers if you are flying from Toronto. Bring a snack ;)
All in all, an incredible island, we enjoyed every minute, but wanted to make sure you have realistic expectations when making your resort decision.
