“Room had a sewer smell.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW

We spent 12 long days at the resort. Yes, the beach was beautiful and the pools were great. Our room had a terrible sewer smell for the entire length of our visit. The food was okay. Most of the food arrived cold, the lobster was always over-cooked. They did not have premium liquors. Their choices were very limited and when they ran out they never replaced the bottle. Their tonic water must have been generic, because it didn't taste like tonic we get in the states. I would definitely go back to the island but NOT to the Mayan Princess resort.

Excellent place to stay, amazing beach, super clean! Would recommend for family and get away! I loved the beach. They do an amazing job keeping it clean. We had a few maintenance issues but they were resolved right away. Most of the staff were very helpful but I most mention that Mario and Douglas were always ready to assist with almost anything, from maintenance issues to planing trips. It was an amazing vacation and excellent choice of resort. I would definitely go back. The only thing I can say that needs a lot of improvement is that the food even though it was good they need more selection, also the service of the bartenders not so good even though we tip them every time they would not go out their way to get you a drink. The buffet was very small and not much to choose from. Other than that great location, super clean, beds super comfortable. Two nice pool always super clean.

One of the best diving programs I have ever used. The dive staff made the resort staff look horrible! The staff was so helpful
And friendly. Only half the menu was available for dinner. We paid extra for vip bar priveleges and did not receive. Quite disappointed in food. Dined next door at Fosters and paid, well worth it.

First the good news, great location, right in the middle of West Bay Beach, well appointed suites, large with comfortable bed, good AC, nice view of beach or pool. Really large, gorgeous pools, 2 of them. All the amenities of an all inclusive. Not so good, when the driver met us at the airport, he said he would right back but an hour later we are still waiting while he is waiting on more guests to arrive from other flights. My recommendation is for him to tell us the truth, "you will be here an hour or more while I wait on more flights to arrive". That way you could choose wether to take a cab or wait. The food is served buffet unless you make reservations for the upscale restaurants but they only do that on the day of and how odd that they are all booked before 8:00 a.m.. I got a stomach bug that put me down for at least 24 hours & I believe it was from the buffet. The staff at the front desk try to be accommodating but the staff at the bar are really unpleasant, no personality at all, not very good service, especially the bartenders. Not sure why, but I would recommend explaining how personable people get better tips. And Santos at the San Simone had told my guy he was going to arrange for a small cake for my birthday acted like he didn't know us when we came for dinner. Very odd! We stayed on the beach side for 4 nights and then had to move to the pool side for the last 3. We packed & moved but the front desk sent a young girl to help us with the luggage vs a guy. Going up & down the stairs on both locations it would have been better to send a male. The TV on the beach side didn't get good reception but was much better on the pool side. But the WIFI is awful & doesn't really work except at the lobby. The most disappointing part is realizing that all my leopard print clothes were missing upon returning back to the states, a bathing suit and a bra were missing. If I would have known I would have locked them up. My recommendation ~ don't take any animal print, it seems to be the favorite of housekeeping. And we tipped the maids well daily!! This place could be a 5 star. The grounds are really nice, the pool is tiled. But there is lots of room for improvement.

Room Tip: Rooms on Pool side have better reception for TV and are quieter than the beach side. It does't...

We regret to hear that we did not meet your expectations. We have many guests who feel the direct opposite and have boasted of our services and food. I will share your review with all the managers. As hoteliers, we realize that there is always room for improvement and feedback is crucial in this process so we thank you for your review.
On a brighter note, we’re happy to hear that you enjoyed the beach and accommodations at the resort. Once again thank you for your review.
Enjoy your day.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Mayan Princess. We purchased a deal online, and went with fairly low expectations, as it was such a discounted rate. We were pleasantly surprised! We were greeted at the airport by a driver for the hotel. When we arrived, our room was not ready, as it was prior to check in, and our bags were held while we ate lunch. We had the all-inclusive deal.

Room- The room was average. It was immaculately cleaned by Reyna, and we never once felt uncomfortable with having any valuables in the room. It had a small kitchen, but we didn't cook because we had the all inclusive deal. The bedroom was nice with a comfortable bed. One complaint was that we were in room 230 right by San Simon. The music was VERY loud, which seemed a bit silly as San Simon was always empty. We were close to the beach, though, and had a great little balcony. The shower had low pressure and was a bit tricky regarding achieving the right temperature, but we did get the hang of it by the end. All in all, we would stay in the same room.

Food- The food was mediocre at best. The buffet had limited fresh or cooked vegetables. It seemed that it was mostly American food, but we would have preferred more local food. Luna Maya was decent, San Simon was mediocre, the food was always cold. We did not get a chance to eat at Calkett's. The chefs did cook the tuna we got from our fishing trip, which was delicious!

Service- The service was great! All the workers were very professional. With many of the workers, such as Astor and Santos, we engaged in personal conversation, which was quite pleasant. Everyone was very nice. One comment is that the service had a different feel than typical American service, which may throw some people off, but my husband and I appreciated. It wasn't fast-paced service necessarily, but it was good, cordial service. Everyone at the front desk was amazing. NO complaints about service!

Beach- Amazing. No other words necessary.

Pool/grounds- Beautiful, but we spent all our time at the beach.

Room Tip: We had a beach front room, it was basic, but we would stay in it again.

What we had: Mayan Princess 1 Bedroom Pool View Villa top floor, which meant: living room with comfortable sofa bed; kitchen facilities including full fridge; balcony terrace with table and chairs. Fridge was a little rusty outside but immaculate inside and functioned perfectly.

We had a non-inclusive package -- breakfast only. Breakfast was plentiful with the good range of North American and Central American choices. Coffee was great. No fresh juice.

What we loved: Beautiful beach; constant breeze that lifted the humidity; amazing snorkeling a few minutes’ walk down the beach; plenty of beach loungers and people didn’t rush to claim them all before 8 am; wonderful variety of well-maintained palms and flowering bushes which attracted butterflies; nearby variety of restaurants, shops and services; great people- watching – there is a very international crowd, at least in the summer.

Who we want to thank: Yaen at the front desk, a good-humoured problem-solver in at least 2 languages; Michelle in the bar/restaurant who was always both friendly and efficient; Ana, our maid, who left a couple of bottles of water in the fridge every day.

What we recommend: Find out when the cruise-ship days are and plan to be away from the beach/hotel for at least part of those days. There are many packages and activities for sale on the beach. A few of the best things to do are low-cost:

1. Snorkelling in front of Infinity Bay Hotel/Condos. Just walk down the beach.
2. Take a walk away from the beach up to the West Bay Mall to check out the shops and snack bars, including “La La”, “Nice ‘n’ Spicy” and “JavaVine Café/Wine Bar”.
3. Take a $3 per person water taxi to West End – completely different vibe than West Bay. “Creole Rotisserie Chicken” does delicious (and inexpensive) dinners. You can sit on their twinkle-lit patio or take the food back to your terrace at Mayan Princess via water taxi.

Things to note:

1. Yes, there are biting insects outside! Bring DEET bug repellent and use it faithfully.
2. If you are not all-inclusive you will probably need to buy bottles of drinking water from time to time, but it’s no more expensive than Canada.
3. There are more party-oriented places on the beach if that’s your thing. There is a wide age-range here and there are families. We are middle-aged so that suited us fine.
4. All the staff spoke some English but don’t assume their English is better than your Spanish. Test you’re communicating before you get frustrated that your requests aren’t being met.
