“Nice place to spend an afternoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

We booked our beach chair/snorkel/kayak w/banarama. Beach is nice, although, if you're there at peak cruise ship time, it's like a sea of chairs and traffic in the water. The sand is like powder and the sea is clear. I snorkeled late in the afternoon (around 2:30-3) down at the end of the beach with the big black rock. Wonderful! lots of people had cleared out by 2:00ish to head back to their ships. Hundreds of tropical fish just a few feet off shore. simply beautiful.
Kayaking is okay, not really anywhere to go, but up and down the beach. A better trip to do if u have time is the island tour w/victor bodden tours and then a couple hours here at this west end beach.

Food & local beers good. Secure area where beach chairs r being monitored by securiity. Lots of trinket peddlers walking up and down the beach.

My husband and I stayed at Bananarama for one night in January 2013. We had spent the days prior in La Ceiba on the mainland and wanted a simple place to stay before we caught our flight back to the States.

The hotel property is pretty and well-maintained. Each room has a patio and hammock, which is great for relaxing after a rough ferry ride!

However, West Bay was anything but relaxing. The beach itself is a very narrow, busy strip of beach full of hotels, lined with lounge chairs full of Canadians watching hockey on their phones or dancing in a cha-cha line (I am not kidding, avoid Henry Morgan like the plague!), and chachka sellers. Fortunately the beach in front of Bananarama is a bit more subdued. Only a few chairs and a nice beach bar (with a guard so the chachka sellers dont bother you !). The water is gorgeous, but it is filled with dive boats coming and going from their half-day trips.

We ate dinner, breakfast and then lunch at the hotel bar. The atmosphere was fun, with live music and good drinks. The service was awful. The waitress walked by us 3 times before finally allowing us to waive her down to place our order. Once we ordered, the food came out fast and hot (thankfully!).

Breakfast was the same. We arrived right when the restuarant opened and were the second ones to be seated, but it took almost 25 minutes to be recongized by the waitress. Once we ordered, the food again came out fast and hot.

Lunch was another pain. We had an afternoon flight, so we returned from the beach to grab a quick lunch and meet our shuttle. When we went to the pizza stand on the property, they told us that they were out of slices and it would be 40 minutes if we ordered a whole pie. In the meantime, the pizza stand fed half the staff. We ended up eating at the airport...

Finally, we grab our bags and headed to the office to meet our shuttle driver (arranged through the hotel). We waited, and waited and waited...almost an hour later and the shuttle driver never showed. Luckily, another couple arrived in a taxi and we were able to grab it ! We arrived at the airport late and had to rush to board...not the way we wanted to end our trip!

I should have done more due diligence as West Bay is a 30-40 minute drive from the airport, and defneitely not our scene, next time we will stay in Sandy Bay.

I am really happy you enjoyed our location, cabanas and staff.

I can understand your frustrations here as it sounds like you arrived on Sunday and left on Monday.

Sunday is the busiest day of the week with locals and tourists alike flocking to the beach. The citizens here in Honduras work 6, 8 hour shifts and customarily recieve Sunday's off which is considered a family day and during busy season it often occurs at the beach. I appologize if it took a bit to get the waiters attention, but I am happy to hear you recieved your food quickly, enjoyed the entertainment and atmosphere we provided.

Monday offer 2 for 1 pizza's and the wait can extend up to the one hour mark. I would suggest to all guests who are coming to get pizza on monday to come early or eat late to avoid the peak hours. We have figured out how to make pizza's faster in this year since we opened the shop but putting out 80 to 100 pizzas in an hour in an adobe oven requires skill, preparation and patience for everyone involved to get the same quality pizza we offer on any other day:)

Breakfast is served from 745 to 930. If you show up at 715 you can expect to wait 30 minutes. Coffee and cold cereal are available starting at 7am so this can be confusing to some guests especially if you stayed only one night. To future guests if you are in a hurry in the AM and let the night staff know the night before we can make arrangements for you to have a breakfast ready in your room... it wont be hot, but it can be done and you can catch a 7 am ferry or flight :)

Also I can not comment on the airport shuttle as I was not informed of the situation. I can say that we do have issues on the expectation that the shuttle leaves every hour or every half hour to the airport/ferry. Transportation is arranged through a third party which we have recently had issues with and it is best to give them 24 hours notice for your departure. In May 2013 we will be changing this and it should improve our shuttle quality.

Thank you for your comments and I am happy you enjoyed your stay. The timing is unfortunate and please contact me personally when you return for an additional discount on your room.

Sincerely,
Louis

Thanks to Bananrama for making our first vacation to Roatan such a great experience!

We were greeted at the airport by Steve who was waiting for us and gave us a ride to the resort and answered all of our questions about Roatan. At Bananarama we were greeted by the friendly staff at the front desk and Danery gave us a great tour of the resort, Sara and Denise answered all of questions during our stay. The two security guards, serving staff at the restaurants and everyone at the dive shop all worked very hard to make our stay so memorable.

Thanks Bananrama for a great vacation and we're looking forward to our next visit.

Sincerely,
Rob Riley and Dave Hassell

This was our first trip to Roatan and we were looking for something laid back that was not too commercialized for our vacation. Roatan seemed to be a perfect fit and Bananarama is definitely the place to stay. The rooms are cozy and we stayed in a cabana which gave us a lot of privacy. The hammock out of our front door was used frequently and provided some great pics. The security at the hotel is Exceptional!!! They monitor the rooms and the beach and the beach gets crowded! Security is constantly, but quietly, monitoring all the patrons and vendors walking along the beautiful beach! The staff goes out of their way to respond to any needs or concerns. Marco at the dive shop is very helpful and accommodating and all the dive masters are very professional. There are scheduled activities every night at the bar so you never have to leave for entertainment. Don't miss the crab race on Sunday night!!
The only thing that was did not get a 5 star rating was the food. The pizza was ok, which is great compared to other pizza on the island. The other food is just ok, as well. Nothing bad but nothing great. The drinks, on the other hand, were made to perfection. If you ask Edmund or Sandra for a strong drink, they will not disappoint. If you ask for a not-so-strong drink they will make it just as you ordered.
A/C worked well in the room and the water pressure was decent most of the time.
This is not Cancun or Miami Beach! If your looking for the giant 5-star resorts Roatan is not for you. If you want one of the most memorable vacations that will unwind you from the grind and reconnect you with your better half this is the place for you! Roatan is a must and Bananarama is hands down, the best place to stay on the island!!!

Me and my wife just returned from a one week vacation at bananarama and we had a blast!
Just to be clear, resorts in Roatan are at a much smaller scale than other Caribbean destinations so if you’re after luxury rooms, a big entertainment team and huge swimming pools, this might not be the place for you. What you can expect at Bananaram is:
An amazing friendly service, you’ll feel right at home.
Rooms are basic yet clean (water supply is sometimes interrupted but that’s the case in other hotels on the island and usually happens for brief periods of time).
Food is great! We had the Sunwing almost all inclusive package and with that we had access to the 3 restaurants on the resort; thirsty turtle (thanks alberto, shani and alex for the great service), pizzarama where we enjoyed the best pizza I’ve ever tasted and Vintage pearl, a fine dining restaurant where you get to relax and take your shoes off “literally” the food there is out of this world!
The Beach! Beautiful and immaculately clean, crystal clear waters and is a nice stretch for running or enjoying a nice sunset walk. Don’t worry too much about cruise ship passengers ruining your experience ,cruise ships are there usually 3 days per week and it doesn’t get that busy anyway plus half the beach is always reserved for resort guests.
Most of our activity was diving and the dive shop there is the best and lives up to all expectations, I shall review it separately though.
We would definetly go back, great diving ,great people and an overall wonderful atmosphere.

Bananarama is a completely laid back "resort." This is a great place to hang out and have a great time. The staff are all quite helpful. The reception team, Silvi,Denise and Sarah will be pleased to show you around. Victoria in the office is quick to respond to your requests. Adolfo one of the waiters at the Thirsty Turtle is always a ray of sunshine with his smiling face no matter how busy it gets. The food at the Vintage Pearl was exceptional and the offerings at the Thirsty Turtle quite generous. My only two issues would be that there should be no fee for beach towels and I do not particularly like the system of suggested gratuity. Pricing on the meals are already at North American prices and I feel that tipping should be left to the discretion of the guest. Given that we were told that a monthly typical salary is $350 per month I find an expectation of a 18% a bit much. We ate at a variety of restaurants outside the hotel and the prices were significantly less.

Room Tip: The rooms are all unique so take a tour of the website to see which best suits you. The housekeepers...

This was the first time we had ever been to Roatan. We chose it on advice from good friends, but chose Bananarama from reading reviews on tripadvisor. So glad we stayed at this resort! We love the true "Island" feel of this resort and prefer the smaller, caribbean-type accomodations to the larger "hotel-type". Our private garden cabana was perfect for the two of us as we were celebrating our first anniversary. It felt as if we were tucked away in a lush caribbean jungle. As stated in previous reviews, this is not a luxurious 5-star resort but that is not what we want when we travel to a caribbean island. This is a very clean, caribbean- style, fun, laid back, island beach resort. It was perfect for us. But what really adds to the total experience of this awesome place is the entire staff at Bananarama. From the moment we arrived, the ladies at the reception office greeted us on a first-name basis and remembered our names for the rest of the week! We would like to thank Danery, Sarah, Denise, and Victoria for taking such good care of us and treating us like family! The staff at the Thirsty Turtle also gets a big thumbs up. Caroline served breakfast with a smile each morning and Alex and Jessica were happy to serve us throughout the rest of the day. We enjoyed conversation with Alex every day and were always happy to see him! We want to give a big shout out to Zebbie at the bar who made wonderful drinks with a strong pour and kept us happy!! Even the maid service was the best we had seen. We had a new towel art on our bed each day and appreciated the attention to detail. The beds were comfortable after our request for extra pillows was met immediately. We have no complaints whatsoever about the resort itself. On Sunday evenings this place is the most popular on West Bay Beach with the crab races, live music, and fire dancers. I cannot imagine that any other resort on this beach could be as much fun as Bananarama! Thanks to everyone from Dean and Jan!! Hope to see you all again!

Room Tip: rooms away from the restaurant are quieter
