Just got back from Las Rocas after a spectacular week of diving with my daughter. My husband came along but did not dive with us; he is now convinced to pursue diving after hearing the daily accounts of our dives. We loved the dive center and went out twice a day for amazing views of the reef and sea life. The price was reasonable (price breaks the more dives you do), wonderful staff (Laura, DM - love her; Jose, boat captain), and the best part was the small group setting (4-7 people on our dives). We were able to get to a site in a short time (often under 10 minutes) and then return to the resort after each dive; thus, saving on sunburn and sea sickness. Plus, we needed only our diving gear; did not have to haul towels, etc. along. We had the option of up to 3 dives per day. A professional photographer accompanied us on various dives and downloaded many great pictures for us (in which we were featured) for a reasonable price. His photos captured the brilliant colors and sea life; definitely worth the investment. The dive center also provided information and transportation for special dives to other dive centers: shark dives, wreck dives, other side of the island, etc. Equipment worked great; $50 for the whole week. You can take the snorkel gear with you and go out off the beach anytime. We loved the small operation and absolutely appreciated the dive master, Laura; she has amazing knowledge of the dive sites and ensured that we were all safe, yet didn't hover.
Absolutely enjoyed the restaurant. Wonderful breakfast every morning: pastries, fresh fruit, cereal, and surprisingly a hot meal. BUT, need to get the coffee going sooner for early risers. Many people are in different time zones. Great ceviche, salads, conch balls, lobster . . . reasonably priced drinks, especially happy hour :). Alex, Edgar, and Winston make sure you're in good hands. Loved charging everything to the room and paying once! BUT get some small bills; hard to tip.
Nice beach with plenty of restaurants, limited shopping and water sports (expensive). Water taxi can take you to West End for more restaurants, shopping, and groceries. BUT water taxi shuts down at dark, which is early - 6:30! Plan to spend $10 to get back in a real taxi; nice to share with someone.
The resort is lovely. Small and quiet (except for our room). 17 bungalows with hammocks. Very rustic "value" rooms. Well air-conditioned in our room - Elba. Gives you a chance to meet the residents staying at the hotel; met some really great people. Had dinner and drinks with them - memorable fun.
The room - Elba. We booked a package through American Airline and chose Las Rocas because we like off-the-beaten-path types of accommodations. We would have loved our room, EXCEPT the toilet did not work for two days, then it rained and the sewage came up and out behind our room (terrible smell), guys were pounding on the wall trying to fix it (outside our windows). The day we left, guys were tearing out plants to make room for the raw coming down the side of our bungalow, and our toilet stopped flushing again. This cannot even be sanitary for the workers. We were never given another room and only by the third day did the mgmt seem to really care. I requested a free dinner the night before we left for our inconvenience, and was granted a free dinner - which we loved. However, we are campers at heart, so I am sure we endured more than most people would. I could never recommend this place to my friends. This room should not have been available to rent. Bottom bungalow REALLY noisy. Others, however, had good experiences with their rooms.
Sand fleas! (Not the resort's fault.) Unbelievable. DEET!! Which is not good for you, especially in the sun, but totally necessary along with some oil of sorts. Don't fall for the coconut oil sold on the beach; doesn't work. Could not enjoy the beach, which was okay for us because we wanted to dive.
Definitely have an understanding of your certification and how it applies to the dives and the pricing. Our friends were charged an unexpected amount for a night dive. Having heard the transaction, I know that the pricing for this dive was not clearly stated and they paid more than what I would have expected. Otherwise, as stated before, great dive shop.
The pool - not really a pool.
Overall, I PLAN TO RETURN. The diving was worth it, loved the restaurant/bar, enjoyed the location, staff (the receptionist, restaurant, dive staff were very helpful), and plan to ask for a maintained/comfortable room next time. Met some great people due to the small setting. Had a blast!
Request upstairs or single bungalows.
