This was a Saturday night meal for my wife's birthday. There had been snow the previous day, but all the roads were clear, with the exception of the venue's car park, which had not been touched. It appeared to be a little quiet when we entered the bar, and was also freezing, but the barman/waiter showed himself shortly after to take our drinks order. Unfortunately, they had no alcohol-free beer ( I was driving), so I made do with a lager shandy. He gave us the menu, which we found to be very limited, with only a choice of about half-a-dozen starters and mains. I chose soup for starters, which was leek & potato, but my wife was not taken with any of the selections. We both chose the rib eye steak as the main course, and asked for the wine menu. We were then informed that they had only one red and one white wine to choose from, as they had not had chance to get to their supplier! We deliberated for a microsecond before choosing the only red, a Chilean Merlot.
We were then shown to our table in the restaurant, where there was only one table occupied by a group of six. We were seated directly next to this table, despite a full restaurant he could have seated us. This meant talking in hushed, embarrassed tones, as there was no music or other guests to mask our (or the other party's) conversations.
The food then seemed secondary, and although acceptable, was not good enough to make up for all the other disappointments. The whole experience was as if the place was about to shut up shop. No wine, very limited choice of food, terrible atmosphere - I would not be surprised if the Clough Manor is closed within a month.
