The oldest part of this castle was built around the year 1200 and different feudal families used to live there until the year 1652. After this time the bailiffs of the government of Berne lived there.
During the centuries this castle was transformed, new parts got added and modern installations got built in.
After the end of the Ancien Regime from 1801 to 1940 there were private owners. The last one was the American William Maul Measey from Pennsylvania who bought it in 1925/26. He was important as he was the one who made the beautiful gardens around the castle. He installed a foundation as he wanted that the castles gets opened to the public. This foundation still runs the museum.
The museum shows living style from different periods of the existence of the castle.
If someone would like to know more about the interesting history of this old castle there is a brochure available at the shop at the entrance of the castle.
I would warmly recommend to visit this great place.
