“The Best Meal We Never Had”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

On our 850 mile trip home from Barcelona to Calais, we took a little 40 mile detour to have lunch at L'Auberge de Clairac, only to find a notice on the gate saying, ' Ce mardi après-midi à L' Auberge sera exceptionnellement fermé. Nous vous remercions de votre compréhension'. Which roughly translates to 'This Tuesday afternoon the restaurant will be closed. Thank you for your understanding'. I had checked the website and it said, 'Open All Day'.

Six years earlier, we had been their very first customers the day they opened the restaurant and we were looking forward to a romantic meal in the French countryside at the end of our holiday. The owner came out to speak to us but did not even offer us a snack or a glass of wine!

Don't you just love it when a plan comes together.

“An excellent dining experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2012

A fantastic meal with an excellent host. The food was very good with impressive attention to detail. We were a party of 4 adults and 4 young children and we were made to feel very welcome. The food for the children was as good as the adults and the atmosphere was very pleasant.

Nous avons beaucoup aimé!

“QUALITY AUBERGE”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2012

Didier and Isabelle, the husband and wife team who took over this restaurant a few years ago, have transformed it from its former existence as a dreary, pretentious, foam-addicted, Michelin-wanabee into a fine dining experience which is professional and unusual. The menu is divided between 'à la carte' dishes and two set formulas: two courses for 25€ or three courses for 32€, although you can just have a single-course 'ardoise' by itself if you wish. There is also a cheaper set-price menu available at lunchtime on weekdays. Main courses are served on large slates ('ardoises') and include duck cooked in several different ways, good steaks and a delicious fish stew which is a cross between bouillabaisse and risotto. Presentation is excellent, service is efficient and thoughtful and the wine list, although short, has some real bargains such as Mme Le Bihan's 'Pie Colet' from Duras at 14€. I have been four times in the last eight months and have enjoyed every one of my visits, as have my friends and for summer dining there is a charming outdoor terrace. Tables are well-spaced, the décor is not distracting and there is no intrusive background music. Reckon 40€ per person maximum with wine, unless you are pushing the boat out with extra drinks.
