Stayed both in the Mexican Suite (separate beds, not ideal for a couple), and in a traditional "double" room on the first floor, both up a flight of steps. Despite being much smaller, we liked the traditional "double" more, mainly because of the nice little South-facing balcony and gorgeous view. Beds were very comfortable, but the bathroom in the smaller room was only of average standard, although adequate and functional. Cleanliness was fine. We really enjoyed breakfast out on the patio, French style, with a good selection of breads and rolls, cheeses, yogurt, coffee, tea, juices, etc. We found the private parking lot rather cramped, and many times full by the time we returned to the hotel in the afternoon. Location right next to the center of town is excellent. The staff were all very friendly and service-oriented.

We stayed for 2 nights without pre-booking so on arrival there were only 2 rooms left, both duplexes for 4 people, so we had to have one of these, or search elsewhere. The 'downstairs' bit of the duplex room was too small for 2 people. We did not need the 'upstairs' bit of the duplex room, and would not have been able to get up to it, as an older couple, even if we wanted to as the stairs were too steep and felt unsafe. We guess it would have been airless too. The bathroom was fine and the balcony was lovely, and made the stay worthwhile.
The safe didn't work and the staff couldn't fix it.
The secure car park was appreciated. We got a space each night, but only by luck as there isn't enough room for all residents to park. There were some guests touring by bicycles and they had a huge waggon for the bikes that took up more than its fair share of space.
The hotel is very handy for the town centre and the main square, which has some great restaurants.
The breakfasts were excellent and could be taken in a courtyard, which was charming.
The staff were very pleasant people.
We would stay here again but wouldn't take a duplex room - we'll book in advance!

Room tip: Avoid the duplex rooms

We stayed in Hotel Azteca for four nights in late October. The room was in the old house and was quite large, with plenty of space that allowed a small coffee table and two comfortable chairs to lounge on. There is a new-ish extension in which the rooms are much smaller and more hotel-standard, so go for a room in the old building. We had room 27. The bathroom and WC were separate spaces, which can be useful if there's more than one of you traveling. Our bathroom had pinkish-syrah coloured tiles (!), which is a bit unusual, but well in keeping with the general theme of the hotel. The bath was small and was combined with a shower, but it was small and I kept having contact with the shower curtain, which was slightly irritating. Breakfast was good and filling, and taken in a panelled and themed room that worked for me. Parking is available in a secure area (gated, but accessible via code entered on a numeric pad after 9-10pm in the evening). Staff were friendly and helpful. Note that if you take a room in the old house you'll have to carry your luggage up a flight of stairs to the first level. There is a cosy little bar the retire to once the bags have found their place in your room. Would highly recommend this hotel (particularly the rooms in the old house) to anyone traveling in the this part of the French Alps.

Room tip: Ask for a room in the old house/building.

Fantastic hotel, ideal location for the restaurants but surprisingly quiet given its close proximity to the night life of Barcelonnette. Very clean with good security. Great breakfast. 93 Euro for a room and 10 Euro for a breakfast.

We stayed here for one night in September 2013. We had a beautiful big room which had everything we needed and was very comfortable. The staff are very friendly and speak English very well. The location is excellent and the breakfast was good. Highly recommend.
