“Barcelonette stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

We spent 4nights here on a cycling vacation. The cycling was epic and the hotel was excellent. The rooms altough not large were very clean and interesting and the beds very comfortable. The best thing about our stay was the accommodating owner. I would stay here on future trips. The secure bike storage was also very handy for our group

Unfortunately only stayed the one night - very comfortable room, bearing in mind this is a grand old dame of a house rather than a modern chain hotel. Madame could not have been more welcoming when I arrived without a reservation. Her English more than adequately made up for my schoolboy French ! WIfi worked OK in the room. Plenty of car parking space and the location is quiet, whilst still being within easy walking distance of the town and restaurants. Breakfast was adequate rather than sumptuous, but very good all the same.

Thoroughly recommended when compared to the cramped and noisy positions of the hotels nearer the centre.

Our night at the La Grande Eperivere was very nice and the hotel is a great location for exploring the mid-evil town of Barcelonnette. The hotel rooms are in a beautiful old building with gorgeously decorated hallway ceilings and historic furnishings. Room themselves are simple yet a good value and the balcony has picturesque views of the Alps surrounding Barcelonnette. The hotel is quiet and offers a pretty sitting area in the front for relaxing after sightseeing the town. The breakfast is served in a lovely dining room and the offering is plentiful. The resident cat also adds to the relaxed atmosphere. The town itself is famous for its low population due partly to emigration to Mexico from 1850 to 1950 and also for its lack of rail service because the Ubaye line, which would have linked Chorges to Barcelonnette, was never completed as a result of the First World War and the construction of the Serre-Ponçon Dam between 1955 and 1961. Barcelonnette is a fantastic, historic town with Mexican influence that's evident in their entertainment and restaurant menu choices and the La Grande Eperivere is the perfect place for which to explore the area.

This looks like a large hotel from the street, but it turns out that the upper 3 floors are apartments and ony the ground floor is a hotel, with about 10 rooms. The ones facing the street have balconies that overlook a large garden that, when we were there, was in a state of benign neglect. Our room was clean, relatively large and smarly furnished. Bathroom was modern. We thought the breakfast was quite good, considering that the hotel is so small. And the place is conveniently located just a nice 5 minute stroll from the town center. Barcelonnette was a great base for our drives up and over Col de Var and Col de la Bonnette, and we would happily stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street so you overlook the garden

La Grande Eperivere, is grand! It is housed in a beautiful old building, very quiet with large, high ceilinged rooms. Very clean, very welcoming and a short walk to all the restaurants in old town Barcelonnette. Each room has a lovely balcony overlooking the pleasant grounds where there is seating under the trees for an afternoon drink .
The breakfast in the old dining room is excellent and the quiet lounge for guests very comfortable.
Highly recommended and great value.

A one night stopover on a cycling trip. Completely agree with recent comments. Room was clean and perfectly adequate; the proprietors couldn't have been more helpful and the breakfast buffet was one of the best I have sampled - everything wonderfully fresh. It was also good to have a safe place to store our eight bikes. Exceedingly pleasant little town with a fantastic boulangerie on Place Aime Gassier.

We stayed one night. Room was ok, clean and simple (think good two star rather than three star) Breakfast buffet was great.
What sets this place apart from others is the very friendly lady proprietor that makes you fell like home and helps you out with any matters.
