“The most beautiful place - stunning service - brilliant dining!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

Wow! ...What a brilliant stay in this immaculate and stylish country lodge. The wine was divine and the dining was gourmet delicious at both breakfast and dinner. Rijks is an absolute delight with the most extraordinary, caring and authentically kind service. We were spoilt from start to finish. What a wonderful weekend stay, made only better by the Tulbagh village, which is a true gem. We happened to be there when the snow capped the peaks of the stunning mountains and loved the view from the iceberg terrace across the vineyard and over the dam to the ranges beyond. Beautiful! The bathroom had 2 power showers, a huge tub and heated floor tiles to warm chilly feet. Filter coffee, fluffy white towels and gowns were delightfully presented. Special touches abound wherever you look - flowers on pillows and a very thoughtfully put together mini bar. Trevor and Louis are doing a fabulous, fabulous job and are hosts without compare. We would love to go back!

We had a fantastic stay at Rijks. The setting of the hotel and grounds are really beautiful. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a lovely wine tasting followed by a delicious dinner. A walk amongst the vineyards the next morning was a lovely end to a great stay.

I took my elderly parents to Rijks for a 2 night stay and even though the weather was very wet and cold, we enjoyed every moment of our time. When we came back from our outings, we were able to relax in our lovely warm and comfortable rooms. Underfloor heating in the bathrooms is fabulous. In addition, the staff are very friendly and helpful and seemed genuinely happy to be of service to the guests.
We would love to go back when the roses are all in bloom.
The walks within the farm are also great. In between the rain showers, my son and I enjoyed the amazing scenery; snow on the mountains combined with dark menacing clouds - wow. It was awesome.

We had a great weekend despite the rain and the cold. We were made to feel very welcome by all and really enjoyed our stay. The Resturant was outstanding.. Would recommend a stay at Rijk's for a relaxing weekend.

We just spent a night at Rijk's Country House, a minute outside Tulbagh. The rooms are great, well appointed and comfortable. Excellent heating, especially as we were surrounded by snow-capped mountains! You MUST do a wine tasting with GM Louis. Rijk's Pinotage is out of this world and Louis is the most gracious host! Dinner was outstanding, I had the pork belly which was out of this world and my partner did a Malay chicken and prawn curry..."to die for doll!" Breakfast was a treat. Continental simple, yet elegant and a wondeful selection of hot "to order" dishes. Tulbagh is a tiny village, yet steeped in history. Great wine country and really worth visiting. Only bummer is that they are all closed on Sundays. Rijk's only has 15 rooms and a small conference centre, so great for corporate take-overs during the week or awesome for small weddings over weekends. This was my first stay there. The friendliness of the staff and personal attention of management was wonderful and we will certainly be back for more. Thanks Louis and team!!!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are excellent. Family/Superior rooms much more spacious. Excellent bathrooms, very c...

The last evening of a 10 day holiday and we could not have chosen better. Rooms are well appointed and the attention to detail shows that the really care. Loved walking into the bathroom with its heated floor. Staff were excellent and both dinner and breakfast five star. Would love to re-visit when all the roses are in bloom. The hotel is not within walking distance of Tulbagh, so plan to eat your dinner here.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Nestled in the beautiful Tulbagh valley, this exquisite four star country house offers travellers and day visitors an exceptional experience in both service and facilities with remarkable attention to detail and a graceful elegance. Rijk's Country House is situated on the eminent Rijk’s Wine farm, home to Rijk’s Private Cellar, five minutes from the centre of Tulbagh. High trees and an abundance of Iceberg roses welcome you onto the Estate from where you can see hills of vineyards set against the Obiqua and Winterhoek Mountains. Restored Cape Dutch style buildings are the frame-work within which you will experience classic furnishings and a warm and relaxed ambiance. Should you wish to sample or purchase wines from the Estate, enjoy the Polo wine bar and tasting room where visitors can sit around a large restored wooden table, or outside on the terrace with its incredible views of the valley. Otherwise, relax in the charming lounge where you will find a library of reading materials and a cosy fireplace. International and traditional cuisine coupled with impeccable service can be enjoyed in the hotel’s intimate restaurant, Que Sera, or at a high table in the private dining area, Mon Ami. Alternatively, the outside Iceberg terrace is the perfect place to relax whilst having a decadently large cup of coffee, a glass of wine or dining al-fresco overlooking the dam or under the stars. Luxury and Superior rooms and Family Cottages - evident of innovative design and stylish fittings – have their own private terrace overlooking a river - along which you will find a swimming pool, braai and lapa area, the French game of boules and hundreds of beautiful roses. In the evenings you can sit on your terrace and watch the sun set behind the surrounding mountains, leaving the vineyards and trees silhouetted by a brilliant pink and orange sky. Picnic on the banks of the river or enjoy a romantic walk through the vineyards and rose gardens. Explore the town with its quaint shops and restaurants, travel the surrounding wine routes, or – for the more adventurous – go hiking or horse-riding through the vineyards and up the mountains. An all-encompassing luxurious experience with a beautiful view out of every window, Rijk’s Country House is sure to leave you feeling rejuvenated, relaxed and like you have discovered a little piece of paradise. ... more   less
