“eating out at Elvins”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

Good portions size, but a long wait for our table considering there was only 1-2 other small tables to be served. Waited an hour after the order was taken.

“Great Food!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

This place is hugely popular in the winter season, but is open all year round.
The menu is more up-market city than a small village restaurant but without the large price tag!! A lot of variety to choose from and the menu changes frequently.
You are bound to meet a lot of locals here and make sure you enjoy a drink with the friendly owners Marie & Bryce!

“We tried to like it...we really did try, but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

After walking the Tongariro Crossing, we were really hoping for a good meal. This restaurant looked very inviting and cosy. Unfortunately we came in just after they opened, and were informed the chef had not arrived yet. No problem. My husband ordered a beer and the rest of us had lots of water. Eventually, we were told it would be a little longer before the chef arrived. We decided to leave and come back later. My husband was told not to worry about paying for the beer as a token for our inconvenience. This was nice and what we had become accustomed to in this very friendly country. We came back 1 hour later. There were a few other customers but not very many. Things went downhill from then on. It felt like we inconvenienced the server by coming back, as we didn't get any water until asked and then she didn't seem to want to serve us since we didn't order any alcohol. We were told the pizzas serve only 1 person, so we had to order 2 for our kids - at $19.00 each I wasn't too happy to see that one was indeed big enough for 2 kids. The specials were good enough, but nothing I really remember. The meal took exactly 1 hour to reach our table. As I said, it was not busy in there. When we were ready to leave, I asked to take away the remaining pizza slices and was given 2 small paper bags for 6 slices. Needless to say, the grease was dripping from this and upon asking for an alternative transport device, was met with a blank stare. I reminded her they seemed to deliver pizza so what did they use for this. I eventually received a box. It also took very long to pay the bill. Sad to think this was our only bad experience eating in NZ, yet the most expensive. Created a memory though. Kids still talking about it.

A very nice restaurant that seems to attract lots of locals, which is always a good sign. We enjoyed our meal here very much.
