We stayed two nights of our honey moon in NZ in this location. Really nice to recomend to anybody. Great location, with views of three volcanoes. We stayed at the chalets... Unbelivable experience! Really clean rooms, moderns and cosy.

We spent two nights in a cabin at the Discovery Lodge to do the Tongariro day crossing at the start of our Christmas holidays around the North Island. The accommodation is just outside of National Village - not too much of a problem outside of the ski season, since there isn't much open during the summer!

Overall, we enjoyed our stay here - the cabin was OK and the organised transport to the volcanoes was professional. However, despite the fancy website design, Discovery Lodge is in urgent need of some capital investment to improve the kitchen, lounge and bathroom facilities. Lack of sufficient hot water, broken toilet door locks, dirty tables, and lack of sufficient kitchen sinks and kitchen space. In addition, we had an extremely surly and disinterested guy at check-in!
That said, we did enjoy our stay overall - but I wouldn't want to stay if there were more people staying at the Lodge than when we were there!

Dear Sbtraveller8,
I am pleased you enjoyed your stay overall, and thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.
Our camping facilities are basic and more like a tradition New Zealand camping ground. Many campers especially enjoy this relaxed aspect. However, I do wholeheartedly agree with you further capital investment will make a positive difference. This will happen as part of our ongoing upgrade of the property. I do apologise to you for all that was not up to scratch during your stay. All will be addressed. This summer has been incredibly busy with huge demand and record numbers staying with us. This has stretched our facilities and also our Team. I do apologise on behalf of our Team for your check in experience. This is certainly out of character for Discovery and for the Team Member involved who I have spoken to. I am sure if you checked in with him (or any other Discovery Team Member) a further 1000 times you would experience friendly Kiwi hospitality every time. Thanks once again for your feedback and for choosing to stay with us. We really appreciate this. Hope to see you again. Best wishes, Callum

We just used them for the transport as the rooms were much more expensive than the equivalent at Ohakune so this review is just for transport.

They were brilliant - we got the second shuttle that leaves at 6.10am and were on the crossing much earlier than most. They give good advice on clothing and make sure you are suitably equipped to complete the trek. The map they provide is also great. We loved that they have regular shuttles back as most other providers make you wait around for 8 hours. As we are of reasonable fitness, we finished in time to get the 12.30 shuttle back

Highly recommended for the transfers.

We stayed two nights in a backpacker cabin in december. Very basic but great location and views of the mountains. Nice set up for the self-caterers with a small kitchen and large lounge and dinning area indoors. Only problem, hot water...it is hard to know when they are going to run out of it if too many people!!
Very friendly and helpful staff. we will go back for sure!!

Room Tip: ask for a cabin with views

Dear Eva F,
Thank you for your feedback and for choosing to stay with us. I am pleased you had a nice time. I am very sorry about the hot water. We will be fixing this as soon as we can somehow. As you know there is no time limiter on the showers so this is part of the problem during very busy times. Hope to see you again one day Eva F. Thank you & best wishes, Callum

We stayed three nights in December in order to do the crossing. Our motel unit was large, warm and comfortable, and had all we needed, although perhaps a little more basic than some accommodation we visited.

We were greeted with all the info we needed about the Crossing service, and the receptionist was extremely friendly and helpful throughout.

We cannot however praise Callum highly enough. He checked that all those walking were properly equipped before allowing them on the bus (we could not believe what we saw on the mountain later - plimsoll and pack-a-mac seemed to be acceptable for some), briefed us on the weather before dropping us off at 6am, and charged nothing if you decided not to walk. We made it to the Red Crater, but had to turn back due to high winds when others who were faster had made it across. We expected to have to wait for a pick up and then for the successful walkers when we made it back to our start point, but Callum arrived speedily with a car complete with towels on the seats, so we did not have to disrobe or wait for the others, as he was concerned we would get cold due to the poor conditions. Callum, you could not have done more for us, thank you so much.

Be aware that there is no internet connection here, but we recommend the Macrocarpa Cafe behind the petrol station in National Park Village for free wifi as well as great coffee and good value food.

At Callum's recommendation we tried the thermal pools at Tokaanu (recommended - local public and private baths owned by the DoC and good value) and had one of the best meals of our trip at Lakeland House.

Will stay here again.....and hopefully complete the Crossing!

We stayed for two nights specifically o do the crossing, but unfortunatly the weather did not play its part. Callumn, the owner/operator who has vast experience of the area advised those who were not highly experinced in alpine regions not to attempt the crossing due to the adverse weather. good advise indeed. you have the benefit of an early start should you stay at the lodge which puts you on the crossing first, which is good as it really gets busy. the lodge it self is adequate. we stayed in the motel room which was basic. but clean. the mountain chalets looked good it yu can budget a bit more. Thanks to Callmn's advise we di not waste the day and sent it hiking around some beautiful shorter trials,Stunning area to visit

Room Tip: If you can afford it, try their chalets

Stayed here for two nights and was very impressed with the whole set up. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Chalet room was neat and clean with lovely gardens to sit in with views to the national park volcanoes. Food in the restaurant was excellent. The big plus was an early shuttle (5.40am) to get you to the start of the Crossing by 6am as well as a useful map. The driver was born and brought up in the area and very knowledgeable about the best time to go to get the best out of your trip. The whole place was informal, relaxing and friendly but very well run and organised. If you are doing the Tongariro Crossing, this is the place to stay.
