“Great Hospitality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

I only went here to use the cafe after leaving my other accommodation in the morning and waiting for a bus in the afternoon. Food in the cafe was very good and well priced. All staff here were really friendly and helpful - very pleasant compared to where I stayed - I wish I had've stayed here, and will do so in the future!

This was my second time staying here and I was not disappointed on either visit. There seem to be lots of options for all budgets. We took the opportunity to utilise all facilities over our two visits. Enjoying the breakfasts from the cafe menu (very tasty), and the restaurant food in the evening was quite tasty and not unreasonably priced (similar in the rest of the village). The kitchen is well equipped and enabled us to cut costs by cooking some of our meals without much hassle. The rooms are basic but clean and have everything you need including a heater which had us warm in no time. The ensuite is small but functional. It can be a bit noisy due to thin walls and you should not expect to lie in late in the morning but this shouldn't be a problem as I expect if you are staying here you will be up and active early with the abundance of activities to do on the doorstep. Overall we found the lodge is a great location with wonderful views from the restaurant and facilities to suit every type of traveller. Also the spa pool is a nice bonus at the end of the crossing to help the weary muscles.

The Park Travellers Lodge is back packer type accommodation and is ideal for those doing the famous Tongariro Crossing walk. My room was typical of what you would expect for this type of accommodation...adequate and basic. The walls were a bit thin and the kitchens for guests use a bit grubby and untidy. Some of the furniture in the communal lounge had seen better days. The bathroom was good with nice hot showers but there was a layer of dust over everything in my room. I enjoyed the communal lounge with its roaring fire and the meals from the onsite restaurant were substantial and hearty. The chef (who I believe may have since moved on) was a warm friendly congenial guy with great PR skills. A lot of the staff are young people on working holidays...some are good...some not so good. The service to take walkers to the track was excellent and the packed lunch provided was excellent also. The fact that we did the walk in terrible conditions was not the fault of the lodge...the weather changed unexpectedly...but the bus driver came to pick us up as soon as we called him and we were grateful for that because we were shivering. It was a shame that we could not use the spa pool due to someone breaking a glass in it...glasses are forbidden from the spa area.

The Park delivers accommodation for most budgets, from dormitory, to shared rooms on up. Budget guests can access a kitchen to cook their own food, and a TV room/ lounge; and there's a drying room. A small bar, and a short menu of well priced sturdy meals aimed at active visitors. The hotel can supply or organise cycle and tramping shuttles and most activities in the region, and offers good advice on what to do, where to go, and what equipment you'll want.
There's more here than just the Tongariro Crossing and the 42nd traverse. Great place for families or groups of friends.

Room Tip: Upstairs and not too close to reception, but make sure you have a warm jacket as you're outside...

This place has all different room options. I stayed in the backpacker room, a 6-bed dorm which was clean but a bit cramped. It was a good job I was in a room with 5 friends otherwise it could get a bit awkward in a tiny room with people you don't know! Mini fridge in the room which was nice to keep your milk etc. in without having to label in a communal kitchen fridge. En-suite included in the room (also quite small) which was refreshing so you didn't have to walk to communal bathrooms.
The place is really nicely set out with a nice outside area with 2 hot tubs! A great touch. Water could have been a bit warmer though as it was freezing when we were there and hot tubs should be HOT... not lukewarm.
The accommodation was good though, lovely huge backpacker kitchen with all the amenities you need. Lovely communal TV area with DVDs to rent which is good if the weather is not good for the Tongariro Crossing.

T is a good place to stay for a night or two. The rooms are nice and clean. This place has two whirlpools but some of the jets are not working and the water could be cleaner.

I had the dinner buffet. For 35$ I would expect more and better tasting food. It was good, but to expensive.

Booked a voucher deal weekend with The Travellers Lodge and was really happy with what we got for what we paid. Had a loft room with ensuite and tea/coffee making facilities and microwave. The bed was average and walls a bit thin, but that didn't stop me from sleeping through the night despite being a light sleeper. The service at the reception and restaurant was awesome and felt really looked after. The package was an amazing option as we felt like we didn't have to do anything - it was all taken care of. The packed lunch for the walk was impressive, and we loved the spa after a long day on the Tongiriro Crossing. Would love to stay again during the ski season.
