Spent a week in Playa Pesquero the week of August 10th, for a family beach vacation. This was our third trip to Cuba, and not our favourite resort by comparison. The beach is gorgeous, as is the pool. The food is ok (not as good as the other Cuban resorts we went to), and the day-time animation isn't that great, as rated by our kids, aged between 10 and 21 yrs, and by what we saw at the pool. We're certainly not prude, but all these sexy drinking and kissing games are silly and inappropriate for younger kids. There was nothing of the sort at the previous resort where whole got involved and had a great time.
The restaurants were good, a nice change from the relatively bland food at the buffet, where the service was not so great. At breakfast, the servers spend more time running around resetting tables than serving morning coffee. A self-serve counter for coffee and cappuccinos is strongly suggested. The chicken and pizza at the restaurants closer to the pool were really tasty, as were the mojitos.
The piano in the main reception area was really pleasant, unfortunately there were a few families (from UK in case they're reading this review!) who let their kids run wild and play tag all around the tables while the parents sat with their drinks on the other side of the bar. Unbelievable how unconcious and inconsiderate some people can be. Intervention from the hotel management would have solved this.
The rooms are basic and nice, no issues at all. Best of all was the beach, with crystal clear water, perfect for scuba diving to look at the tropical fish. A non-smoking section of the beach and pool wouldn't be a bad idea, with many smokers using the beach as one big ashtray.
Would I recommend this resort? Yes. Would I return? If the price was right (which it was for this vacation), but we all preferred the last resort. Playa Pesquero certainly looked nicer than the two neighbouring resorts further down the beach. Overall, I consider this resort more of a 4 star, not a 5-star by even Cuban standards, and my 4-star tripadvisor rating is mainly for the beach and pool. Flew on Air Canada Rouge, which was fine but on the cheapo side compared to Sunwing in terms of service. A tad more service would have been nice for those of us spending an overnight in transfer at Pearson for the flight on to Mtl, not knowing where to go when we arrived in T.O. with the airport pretty much empty and nobody from AC to provide us with some answers. Some basic FAQs from Air Canada for travellers in this situation in advance of the trip would have been helpful.
