“Stunning beach, great size pool, food/animation get passing grade”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2014

Spent a week in Playa Pesquero the week of August 10th, for a family beach vacation. This was our third trip to Cuba, and not our favourite resort by comparison. The beach is gorgeous, as is the pool. The food is ok (not as good as the other Cuban resorts we went to), and the day-time animation isn't that great, as rated by our kids, aged between 10 and 21 yrs, and by what we saw at the pool. We're certainly not prude, but all these sexy drinking and kissing games are silly and inappropriate for younger kids. There was nothing of the sort at the previous resort where whole got involved and had a great time.

The restaurants were good, a nice change from the relatively bland food at the buffet, where the service was not so great. At breakfast, the servers spend more time running around resetting tables than serving morning coffee. A self-serve counter for coffee and cappuccinos is strongly suggested. The chicken and pizza at the restaurants closer to the pool were really tasty, as were the mojitos.

The piano in the main reception area was really pleasant, unfortunately there were a few families (from UK in case they're reading this review!) who let their kids run wild and play tag all around the tables while the parents sat with their drinks on the other side of the bar. Unbelievable how unconcious and inconsiderate some people can be. Intervention from the hotel management would have solved this.

The rooms are basic and nice, no issues at all. Best of all was the beach, with crystal clear water, perfect for scuba diving to look at the tropical fish. A non-smoking section of the beach and pool wouldn't be a bad idea, with many smokers using the beach as one big ashtray.

Would I recommend this resort? Yes. Would I return? If the price was right (which it was for this vacation), but we all preferred the last resort. Playa Pesquero certainly looked nicer than the two neighbouring resorts further down the beach. Overall, I consider this resort more of a 4 star, not a 5-star by even Cuban standards, and my 4-star tripadvisor rating is mainly for the beach and pool. Flew on Air Canada Rouge, which was fine but on the cheapo side compared to Sunwing in terms of service. A tad more service would have been nice for those of us spending an overnight in transfer at Pearson for the flight on to Mtl, not knowing where to go when we arrived in T.O. with the airport pretty much empty and nobody from AC to provide us with some answers. Some basic FAQs from Air Canada for travellers in this situation in advance of the trip would have been helpful.

We visited this resort Aug 4 th for 2 weeks and had a truly wonderful time. The staff from the reception desk to the gardeners can not be faulted they all work tremendously hard and have always got time to pass the time of day with you with a smile. The rooms are dated and could do with a face lift but are always cleaned to a very high standard. The food is plentiful with a lot of choices however during our stay we were only able to get chips twice due to a potato shortage, this didn't bother us but some people found this a reason to moan, Remember this is Cuba.My only complaints are the buffet restaurant is too spread out which was hard work and people reserved the umbrella shades on the beach with t shirts as early as 6.30/7am every day and then didn't come to the beach till after 9am which i think is wrong. Sun loungers were plentiful and easy to get around the pool throughout the day so no problem if you prefer the pools. We went on the dine with dolphins trip with the rep and this trip is well worth the money we had a fantastic day, a trip on the open top bus to the local market is a must too. All in all a fantastic hotel and well worth a visit.

We stayed here in December /January 2009-2010 for 2 weeks all inclusive.

The hotel itself is huge with beautiful gardens and main reception with lots of areas to sit and chill. There are several bars inside and outside with lots of friendly staff we got to know. We took a car like train ride from outside the hotel which was great to see the culture of how the locals live. There are also several activities on each day which guests can take part in and lots of sports such as tennis, squash, bowls, ping pong etc to use. There are also lots of excursions to buy too, we swam with dolphins, snorkelling, scuba diving, catamaran and lots more! The pool is really big with lots of sunbeds, it was never hard to get one.

The rooms are really big with lots of storage space and are cleaned everyday.
The food was amazing, we chose to eat at the main buffet restaurant most nights which changed daily and had lots of things to choose from. (We ate here on Christmas night and New years night and the food was incredible, they really did amaze!) We also ate at all the restaurants available which are all included in all inclusive but you have to book. All were lovely and worth going to.

Overall an amazing hotel and holiday with amazing staff that go out their way for you, I would definitely come back to Cuba and stay at this hotel.

Please note Cuba is a poor country so you should tip the staff regularly, they will still treat you the same if you don't but they work hard and deserve to be rewarded. Also (I don't think it's allowed) but we regularly gave staff water throughout the day as they have to stand in the heat all day! We also left most of our clothes, toiletries and other things to the staff for their families which they all appreciated!!

Just returned from the best holiday ever in Hotel Playa Pesquero. Spent 14 nights at this remarkable resort and it lived up to every possible expectation. The photos on the internet cannot prepare you for the sheer beauty of this resort. Our family of five planned this all inclusive holiday of a lifetime to celebrate significant birthdays and our Silver wedding Anniversary. The rooms were so spacious and clean, the grounds were impeccable as were the pool, gym, jacuzzi and recreation areas. The lobby bar, pool bar, beer garden catered to your every need. The first night was very confusing as there was so much choice in the buffet restaurant but we soon found our way around and experimented trying out different dishes every night. I had chicken cooked to order by the lovely chef Jose at the buffett but there was something for everyone. Initially the flies in the restaurant were really annoying but we found if we dined out a little later they seemed to disappear. The al la carte restaurants, Carebeno, Romantica and Italiano were fantastic where fresh lobster was flombeyed at your table. During the day we had snacks at the fish and chip bar and the hotdog and hamburger bar. There was a distinct absence of chips during our second week but we didn't let this ruin our holiday! We were regular visitors to the Ice Cream Bar where you can find the most exotic flavours such as coconut, guava and mango. The weather was fantastic for the whole two weeks although it did rain overnight a couple of times. The pool areas were great with loungers available most of the time (if you went in the late afternoon) although it was difficult to find a space at the swim up bar that was always occupied with the same people who I doubted very much could swim at all. We took part in the water aerobics classes with Yanis and CICi every day. These ladies made it fun and made up for the lack of interest from the clients with their determination and enthusiasm. The pools were great, however once we discovered the beautiful beach we spent most days there where there were plenty of sun loungers and an even more beautiful view. The resort reps and staff were fantastic. Raul taught us so much about cuban life and took us in a horse and buggy to a local zoo in Guardalavaca and to visit Maliha. He was so knowledgeable and proud of his country and did everything to help us enjoy our stay in Cuba. Raul like many of his fellow reps including Bia and Anis are true ambassadors to their country and to Playa Pesquero. We traveled to Holguin in a taxi, a 1958 Cheveroulet which was driven by Bill who showed us around the town, took us up the hill of the cross for a fantastic view of Holguin, the old sugar cane factory and took us shopping for fans and lunch and drove us back to the resort. He was the best guide ever and knew everything about Cuban history. Last weekend we visited the carnival at Holguin which was great the down side being that we could not follow the floats and were seated on stands along the route like visiting dignatories! We knew this was for our safety so that we didn't get lost and enjoyed the event anyway, such a contrast to the Notting Hill Carnival alot smaller and a lot warmer!. The other down side of the holiday was that we were too far away to visit Havana and that we could not swim with the dolphins as it was 88 pesos each to swim and 50 pesos to watch. Also did not get to dance Salsa as much as we would have liked. Although Salsa music was played continuously around the resort there was little uptake by the clients to dance which was quiet disappointing. Salsa clubs in Holguin were an hour away from our resort so this was not possible. Finally our Thomas Cook rep Nancy was fantastic and was a fountain of knowledge during our stay. The staff including our maid Made were fantastic remember to get plenty of single pesos for tips when you arrive. One peso is the customary tip for the staff. If you want a holiday in a beautiful unspoiled country Cuba is must. I can't wait to go back!

Cant believe we were at the same hotel as some of the people giving five stars, yes its cuba and the general population have and expect a lot less than we have, but that doesnt give the Thomas cook the right to charge extortionate fees for what I consider a two star hotel.

Really wished we had taken note of the bad reviews, would have definately avoided and not wasted over £4000 and two weeks of a hard earned holiday

Plane tray broken on both inbound and outbound, even after I let them know on the first trip.
Two cases badly damaged at airport.

What looked like small lumps of tissue and grit at bottom of pool
Broken and missing tiles all over pool.
Large numbers of broken sun beds,
Three of the restaurants closed and relocated, (Menus were different in some of them)
Constantly running out of chicken,
Ran out of chips, saw them once in two weeks.
Flies everywhere running all over open food.
Using tongs on raw and cooked meat (Daughter was ill twice, myself once)
Food severely overcooked, lots not eaten.
Everything seemed fried, so hard to avoid eating anything greasy when you have stomach cramps.
Prawns not de veined
10 to 15 minute wait for water at table, and coffee in the morning.
Tables changed very slowly.
Staff seem to look everywhere except at you to avoid eye contact.
Complained about food but they never got back to us
No drinks in room one day, asked about it at reception, they did nothing at all.
Nightclub closed for refurbishment, now in conference room.
Seemed like the whole hotel was short staffed in all areas.
Weekends got really busy for some reason, really hard to find an unbroked bed by the pool.
Cockroaches in bathroom, (leave the plug in)
Rooms very tired, air con worked but not great.
Not enough drinks in room if theres more than two of you. (told to hide them if you want more)
Had a large dead crab outside the room on grass, never got removed, eventually mowed over.
The Wifi comes at a cost of 5 pesos (£3) an hour, Very expensive if you have a teen with you.

Good points

Beach was lovely,
Romantico and Seafood restaurants were nice, except the prawns still not de veined.
Trips were good, food on the trips were lovely

I now know why Virgin and Thompson no longer go here. wished I had taken notice, I have never complained about any holiday before, I try and take all the aspect of where i am into account, but there were just too many things that ruined our holiday for us.

If you have ever been to a regular four or five star hotel and expect the same levels then seriously think again....

Room Tip: Go first floor to avoid crabs getting into room, or Go to a different hotel

Had a fantastic time in this hotel. Rooms large and clean,, air conditioning quiet and very effective, food excellent, staff really friendly and helpful.and even though it is a large resort it did not feel like it. We did not have to queue for drinks or food, always plenty of sun loungers at the pool (though you do have to be there early for a good spot) Plenty of loungers at the beach and we never had any problems getting a good spot under a banana leaf umbrella. Spare a thought for the security staff at the beach and take them a can of cola or lemon from your fridge when you go to the beach. They are on their feet for long hours in the sun.and the fridge in your room is filled every day.so you will not miss one or two cans. The gardens are beautifully maintained and the gardeners are very friendly and polite. The ice cream bar is a must visit with amazing flavours of ice cream. Try the fresh coconut and vanilla, it is truly fantastic. The Cariberio Caribbean restaurant serves the most wonderful lobster and prawns cooked in rum at your table.. We went on a couple of trips, The Green Path into the heart of the countryside in 4x4s was great. Wee also went to Santiago though not sure the three and a half hours it took us to get there was worth the cost or the experience.
Any men going must remember to take long trousers and shirt with a collar as they will not be allowed into the Romantica or the Gondola restaurants. They do not have to be smart trousers, chinos or even jeans are acceptable. They were the only 2 that casual dress was not allowed. All in all a really great holiday with lovely people food and sunshine. Who could ask for more..One last thing, book your restaurant reservations as soon as you can it is well worth doing.

Room Tip: We stayed in 4702/4703 and it was very quiet, not too far to walk but if walking is a problem lots o...

Visited here in APRIL 2014 for 2 weeks.TERRIBLE.
Lobby area fine but that is it.
Two members of my family got food poisoning here, dirty pool areas, poor decor all over the accommodation areas, and birds constantly eating food that was uncovered. It must be noted that i visited after the food poisoning related element in early APRIL 2014 YET despite this little changed.
The Thomas Cook rep not much use- Just defended her own as she was local.
Complained to the hotel who admitted errors but little else. My room 1812 flooded twice due to poor drainage, eventually moved but the next room not much better, Not much else to say apart from i hope my images will be enough to put you off this place, its a pity i cannot upload the other 300 negative images
