Very big, & very nice hotel.

The pool is simply enormous, and there was always enough sunbeds to go around.

It never seemed too crowded.

The beach was mostly nice, though a bit rocky in places.

Food was nice, though often luke-warm rather than piping hot.

The staff were always polite & helpful.

We would return if we went back to Cuba.

We've been in about 20 all-inclusives in Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic over the last 20 years. We stayed at the Hotel Playa Pesquero from October 26 to November 2nd.

The Hotel Playa Pesquero earns its 4½ Cuban stars. It offers good choices of places for lunch and dinner, and has different places to eat and drink throughout the site. The place is larger than the usual 4 star hotels. The big plus for this hotel are the kindness of most staff, and the fact that they don't put pressure on you for a tip. However, it is a Cuban hotel - so expect less than other places such as Costa Rican or Riviera Maya hotels.

We were staying on the second floor of unit 28, and we obtained what we requested - 2nd floor on the East side of building in a quiet area (no sun on the afternoon). As usual, it is recommended to take a room on the upper floor if you want to minimize the occurence of critters (buildings are only 2 story high). The room is typical and a little tired. We had a maid who was kind but lazy - only made the bed and replaced the towels - no clean up of bathroom nor cleaning the floor, and always the same bird decoration on the bed. However, please don't take this as granted - I am sure there are great maids in the hotel.

Food in a-la-carte restaurant is a notch lower to other all-inclusives. The buffet food is not so great and lacks vegetable. However, you will certainly not starve and they will cook your meat/fish to your liking if you don't find anything else appealing in the buffet. We've been to hotels in Cuba with better food than that, although I must admit we also stayed in a 3 star in Jibacoa Cuba several years ago where the choice of food was really minimal. However, I must emphasize that Cuban waiters and cooks can make a difference between being welcomed or feeling like another gringo.

I am a jogger so I was able to jog on the hotel ground - very humid and hot early in the morning. The run of the whole site takes about 15 minutes so you would need to do a couple of those circuits to make it worth.

Snorkeling in front of hotel is relatively good over there, albeit not as great as Cozumel or at Maya Barcelo in Riviera Maya. Just swim about 400 feet from the shore in front of hotel and you will hit the coral reefs. They are deep (about 20 feet) but slightly undamaged. The corals in front of Blau Costa Verde (the 2nd hotel on your right when facing the ocean) are pretty sandy, damaged and uninteresting. However, it is a good choice if you are uncomfortable with depth and afraid of being a bit away from the shore.

They have several Hobby Cat Catamarans however they don't let you go on your own. We never had any problem finding a shady area on the beach as we were in the low season. Just waive and they'll bring a couple of long chairs for you (again your choice of tipping or not).

I recommend you the bar in the lobby. They have great and kind staff/waiters (in particular we enjoyed Adonis) - they litteraly make our stay a great one and pretend to be interested to your stories. Please be aware that, unless you wait for the special drink cart in the evening, they usually offer diluted/fad versions of the more known alcools (e.g. Kalua, Cinzano).

Overall, I would recommend you this hotel if you are a bit tight in your budget (so Cuba) and can find a good deal. Please note that I was there in late October. I am not sure if you would find it as friendly and enjoyable during the more busy weeks in winter. However, this comment would apply to anywhere, isn't?

On arrival at the resort I was thrilled, it looked lovely and we were offered a cocktail as we got off the coach which was very much welcomed after our 10 hour trip.
Our room was lovely, quite big with a lovely bathroom and seperate dressing area. Our maid Ileana was wonderful. She spoke really good english and cleaned our room everyday even changing the bed every single day. She worked really hard and apparently only gets paid about 11 pesos a month! We used to give her a tip every couple of days, although really welcomed this is not necessary. You have a fridge in your room which is filled everyday with 2 beers, 2 colas and a bottle of water.
All of the staff worked really hard, always smiling and very polite. The grounds are kept immaculate and the beach is gorgeous with free pedelos and catamerans. There are plenty of sun loungers and if there were none out you just had to ask one of the guys on the beach and they would fetch one for you.
There are plenty of places to eat with a great variety of foods from pizzas to hotdogs, burgers to seafood, everything you can imagine. The only problem is that the buffets are all open to the wildlife. We would be sitting having our meal and there would be birds flying in and landing on the food displays. They would pick at any leftover food from other diners and would eat any food that was left unattended which was of course the food that we would be going to eat unaware that the birds had been nibbling at it!! Also there would be flies landing on uncooked meat and bread displays. We took hand sanitizing gel with us because of bird muck on the backs of the chairs that we had to touch when we sat down. We did try not to eat any unheated foods due to the bird problem but unfortunatly my daughter got sick 4 days into the holiday and was ill with vomiting and dihorrea for 3 days. We told the rep and she said that out of the 1000 odd Thomas Cook guests she had only 11 had reported illness but everyone we spoke to had been ill or knew of someone who was. The amount of people we spoke to who had been on drips and had injections to stop the sickness was unreal!
The drinks here are really nice. There is a really big variety, pretty much anything you can imagine but it is mainly local brands. There is a free premium drinks trolley brought around of an evening in the main Lobby bar. The lager is quite nice too. Once again the staff are really friendly and polite and cant do enough for you. We would just tip them every now and then which they really appreciated.
The entertainment was a bit hit and miss. It was mainly dance shows which the entertainment team put on. The dancers did work really hard with different routines ever night. We were a bit disappointed with this as it was the same thing everynight and was usually finished by 10.30 - 11 pm.
The hotel has wi-fi in the Lobby only and this is charged at 4.50 pesos for an hour which is about £2.70. Phone calls home to the UK are very expensive though. I made a call which lasted 2 mins and it cost about £11.
Unfortunatly my last day and trip home were a nightmare as I came down with the sickness. A 3 hour wait in an airport and an 8 hour plane journey are not much fun when you cant stop being sick and running to the toilet. I usually have a really good immune system but even I couldnt escape the unhygienic food bug!! I spent the next 3 days quite ill and came home thinner than I went which in an all inclusive resort is pretty good!!!

Room Tip: We were in block 49 which was in the middle of the lobby and beach but buggys will come and pick you...

My boyfriend and I returned from our first trip to the Caribbean in Sept 2013 and we had a fabulous time. We were wary about booking for September with this being the hurricane season but I certainly wouldn't worry about this in future. Apart from one cloudy day and one of two late afternoon/ evenings of rain the weather was glorious and the hotel room has an umbrella for use when it is raining in the evening.
We had read reviews prior to our trip about the limited food choices but neither my fella or I are fussy eaters so we did not think it would be a problem. There are plenty of places to eat in the hotel, there are several restaurants including the main buffet restaurant however the quality in some of them where far from 4 star. The Romantica is by far one of the better along with the seafood restaurant on the beach and we only discovered the Tapas style food at the Beer Garden at the end of our trip and its definitely worth a visit if not in the evening then at lunch. The Pizza place at the beach for lunch is worth a visit as well.

The rooms yes are basic but they are lovely and they are clean and there were certainly no complaints from us. The garden surroundings are lovely and well kept and cleaners are constantly walking around tiding and cleaning.
The beach is gorgeous and the sea is stunning, definitely borrow or as we did take your own snorkel and get out there and take a look at the fab colourful sea life. Also the catamaran, Pedalo's and Kayaks are free so give all of them a go!
We cannot comment on the evening entertainment because we mainly sat in the lobby bar or beer garden of an evening and 'People watched '. However there was plenty of daytime entertainment either around the pool or at the beach but again if you want to just chill with a book and relax then you can just go for it!
We highly recommend the Dine with Dolphins trip, well worth the money and an experience of a lifetime!
My main tips would be to take a torch because it is quite dark and badly lit at the evenings. Get yourself booked into the different restaurants as soon as you arrive because the food does become quite boring and limited...especially get yourself booked into the Romantica!. Take along some big plastic cups that you can get filled up in the bars during the day so that you don't have to put up with the small glasses they give you.
Overall we couldn't really fault the holiday, it was great value for money. Yes the food compared the Riu in Cape Verde last year did not come close but overall both me and my partner would return. The service was first class and the Cubans are very friendly. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for 1st floor if you don't like the creepy crawly wildlife

We returned from Cuba in the early hours of yesterday. We found that the service was absolutely excellent! We had room service on a couple of occasions and they came with whatever we requested, although not on the menu!! They brought us baby food to our room every evening and lunchtime and would also deliver to where we were on that day! The kids enjoyed the pool and the beach and my daughter really loved kayaking and going on the catamaran. We hired out snorkel, goggles and flippers for free and had them for an hour. The Cubans are such nice, friendly people and are truly welcoming. The food is nice. There is a pancake bar, omelette bar, meat cooking place and an ICE CREAM PALOUR! The a la carte restraints are good, I reccomend the Caribbean and the romantico, they were fantastic. You have an option of trips to go on including swimming with dolphins ;) There are also golf buggies that can take you where you want around the complex and there is a mini train that the kids loved. We took it to the local market in guardalavaca. The bars were great, and as I say the staff were very nice and friendly. We are currently booking now to return next year!!!! We LOVE PLAYA PESQUERO!!

Room Tip: Choose a room on the closer ring to get closer to the restaurants and lobby.
