This review is for the restaurant only, we did not stay in the hotel.
We had booked a table on the terrace for 7:00pm on a warm Friday night in July. When we arrived we were surprised to find the car park, dining room and terrace nearly empty. Although we had booked, a table had not been prepared for us so while we settled in a very awkward waiter tried to lay our places. He did not try to talk with us or make eye contact. We ordered a bottle of white wine and tap water. These arrived with no wine cooler and no ice in the water. The waiter continued to lay the table and propped-up a spare menu in the centre of the table. A gust of wind toppled the menu and this spilled my glass of wine into my lap. I jumped up and the waiter took 10 seconds to say he would bring me a fresh napkin. I pointed out that it would need more than a napkin because the table and chair were wet. I stood waiting for nearly 5 minutes before deciding to go inside to find out what was happening. I was astounded to find the waiter, head waiter and barman chatting at the end of the bar. When he saw me the waiter came over and gave me a napkin. I walked past him and told the head waiter that I did not believe the waiter understood what had just happened: that he had propped up a menu which had then been blown over by the wind spilling my glass of wine into my lap and I had not received an apology or offer of replacement wine! The head waiter offered his apology and said he would bring a glass of wine out to me. I went to the toilet to try and clean up and when I returned to the table the waiter had dried the table and chair but left the wet napkin in the middle of my place setting.
The menu was not long but offered enough choice for most tastes we thought, however when I asked the head waiter about the vegetarian option he had to guess what it was.
The nibbles and selection of bread rolls with flavoured butter were excellent.
Our food eventually arrived and was well presented but it was below the standard you would expect from an establishment like this, especially when you consider that they had hardly any other customers during the two hours we were there: the yolks of poached eggs on top of the smoked trout were hard (the main reason to have poached egg on anything is the runny yolk); the pork from the local Laverstoke Park was excellent but the accompaniements were tasteless and the sauce had nearly dried up on the plate; the dauphanoise potatoes were hard.
All in all it offered very poor value for money and on reflection we are not surprised that it was empty.
Don't go for a family meal. They are clearly set up for weddings and other large scale events b...
