I recently stayed there on Feb 28, 2012, and also on Jan/25, and Jan/27-2012.
I go to Mexico on a monthly basis, and though this Hotel La Hacienda is not Mexico itself, it provides a nice Mexican ambiance and decoration. The owner himself is Mexican, if I recall right. Breakfast can be awesome, depending on what you order. Lunch, sandwiches and supper can also be good, certainly above average, but Mexican they are not. Some rooms have issues with their bathrooms doors, TV reception, or air conditioner unit, but the hotel staff takes note of that, and try to accommodate you right away. This hotel used to be new, and though very good yet, some maintenance issues are coming afloat more and more. I know that because I have stayed here some 12 times over the last 5 years or so (why, because it is conveniently located, half way between Panama City and the city of David, in the province of Chiriqui). Luckily, the human team comes together, and make up for any aging of the physical structure; the restaurant staff if simply great! Business center can be overly busy at times, sadly, sometimes by staff not by guests.
Pool is nice, specially during Panama's dry season. Mosquitoes might be a nuisance during rainy season (usually, April through Mid-December in Panama). Fresh fruits and drinks are always available. I will keep staying here, though I wish food prices were more in line with Hotel La Galeria, a nearby Panamanian option to La Hacienda. Front desk staff should smile more; they are the first human impression on that hotel.
Management could enhance surrounding with lots of colorful "veraneras" (bouganvillas, in Mexico). During the dry season, Santiago may be the hottest city in the Republic of Panama. Keep yourself hydrated.
Ask to be changed immediately if rooms feature do not work. Making advance reservation helps.
