“A reasonable overnight stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2011

Stayed one night in February while driving around the western part of the country. The town of Murten itself is the most charming place and is definitely worth a visit. It used to be a very important market spot in that part of the region. The hotel is situated next to the small medieval fortress that used to protect one of the town gates. The location and the parking is extremely convenient. The hotel is comprised of two adjoining houses, that look very old, charming and inviting. The interior however was a bit dissapoining due to beeing eclectic in the extreme. With some more money investments and a bit of taste this place would be much prettier. The standart room was of reasonable size, but some wooden pillar protruding from the wall to the ceiling made it look smaller and also complicated greatly the access to the wardrobe. The room in general was very simple and modestly furnished with things obviously bought at various sales. However the service was friendly and efficient. The price for B&B for two was 200 CHF. By the way, don't forget to buy as much of special murten pie as you can carry!

we stayed there for a night in August during the Murten classic days.
the restaurant was packed until the concert started but it was well worth waiting.
The view over the lake was wonderful especially at sundown.
the food was excellent and the wine reasonably priced.
The room was a bit weird but not too expensive.
The furniture was very old but ok.
it was a family room but it remided me of the Seventies.
The bathroom was orange!
it is very central though and Murten is a gem.
Somebody said that Swiss hotels look and feel like sanatoriums of the seventies and i think he is still right!

Room Tip: for large families take the family appartement for 280CHF

Very comfortable hotel in Murten in an ideal location and with a fantastic view of the lake. The train station is about a 5 minute walk; the main restaurant street is just a block away; going down to the lake is another 5 minute walk. Everything is so close to the hotel, the service is great and the breakfast is very complete too.

Located overlooking Lake Murten in the town that bears its name.
Small but charming hotel -- the staff will make you feel welcome.
Steps away from the historic town and all that it offers.
We were afforded a room with a roof top balcony overlooking the lake -- FABULOUS !!!
Parking is easy and included, as is breakfast -- typical Europeon fare.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking to lake.

We stayed here for 2 nights and wished it could have been longer. We enjoyed a clean comfortable room which had a better than expected view of the beautiful lake. Tea and coffee is not in room, but is available all day, though you may have to ask where it is located.
Breakfast is an exceptionally good buffet, in a beautiful room overlooking the lake.
Dinner (half board saves a few francs) was excellent and is served in a glass enclosed reataurant, again with a view. Book dinner early.
Murten is a lovely old town on the lake, and is popular as a holiday destination.
The hotel is family run, and has a good atmosphere. It is an easy walk from the rail station. We recommend it.

Pros: the staff. We had particularly great interaction with Mark at the front desk, and everyone there was very friendly, multilingual and helpful (and I must say in contrast to most of the people in Murten, wow). When we checked in they gave us a choice of two rooms. One had a lakeside view but was not as good because it had one big bed and one small bed (we were two friends traveling). The other had two separate beds but no view to speak of (just the outside street). The first room with the lakeside view was...interesting. We called the little bed sleeping in the hole. Clearly it wasn't that bad as you can see in the photos but yeah, it's not ideal to sleep in that tiny space and you also can't watch the TV from there which is on the wall. The bathroom was...retro, to put it kindly. The towels looked like they were dishtowels! The view was awesome, but you had to be right up in the window to see anything.

The second one, the room we took, was Ikea-like in furnishing and was basically a place to sleep at night. It was fine, but not especially comfortable. The beds were not comfortable and kinda cheap. The walls were also kinda thin. The bathroom had a really loud echo for some reason and they only gave us one cup at the sink! The TV, though was totally unacceptable. It was in theory a color TV but that meant that there would be flashes of color (often the whole screen being blue) alternating with black & white. Interesting. Yeah, yeah, on vacation you're not supposed to be in the hotel watching TV but at the end of a long day it's nice to kick up your feet and relax with a watchable TV.

The breakfast was kind of mediocre, certainly compared to other hotels in Switzerland. The rest of the hotel space was kinda weird and funky but not necessarily in a bad way. Overall, it was fine for a couple of nights but it's not somewhere I would be running to again.

We reserved a standard room, non smoking. When we were shown the room we could smell the smoke. I said we had to move and luckily they had a suite available with a lake view. Nice and roomy they gave it to us for a bargain price. We were at the end of our long trip and a splurge was ok. We enjoyed the rooms. Large front room, bathroom, and bedroom. A fan kept us cool enough at night.

We left the bathroom light on and left the window open at night for air circulation. Mistake. A zillion bugs were in our bathroom. We didn't make that mistake again.

The owners, especially Ariste, and their staff were especially helpful. One staff member helped us find an electronics store that had a GPS (we had just broken ours). Ice was available for the room. The hotel had a few free parking spots and we lucky to get one. The restaurant served very good food. We had the lake fish and it was great.

Breakfast had smoked salmon, meats, cheeses, other selections. Grocery store just down the street. Great location.
