“Life Changing Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We recently completed the Mediterranean cooking course with Chef Laura Giusti. The whole experience was fantastic from beginning to end. The food was wonderful and I'm not just sayng that because I helped make it. Like I said it was life changing. I realized that food is not just stuff it in your face and go, but an experience and is always better when you take your time to relish it. And always improves with a couple glasses of wine. :) Now that I'm home, I'm taking the time to make things with fresh ingredients (like making homemade pasta), making most meals multi-coursed and just whipping up a Fondant for dessert like nobody's business.

Rooms were terrific. Staff were also excellent.
The hot tub was a unique experience. Since it is woodfired you have to plan your dip several hours in advance. I was one of only people to use the pool at that this of year, but it really was fine once you got in and your limbs numbed up a bit.

We went into the vacation thinking this was a once in a lifetime vacation, but left planning on coming back as soon as possible.
Now I only have to find somewhere to put my new squid-gutting skills to use.

This was by far one of our greatest vacations we have ever taken. All of the staff at Casa Ombuto made our stay exceptional . Paola Bachetti, our Master Chef was superb , giving us a cooking experience of a lifetime that we will cherish forever! She combined cooking and history all in one . She is certainly a bundle of endless energy. It was everything we hoped for and more. The side trips to the winery, cheese and olive oil factories were great. We would recommend this to anyone that wants to know what Tuscany is all about.

This was the experience I had hoped for. The location and accomodations are superb, and the staff is just wonderful! Chef Paola is an absolute wonder! She educates and works with everyone to build confidence and skills, and laughs, jokes, and fills the kitchen with her presence the entire time. I can't speak highly enought of this wonderful place that will live on in my memories, as well as the people that I met and shared the experience with. This is the one you are looking for!

Room Tip: If you can get the apartment with three bedrooms to share you get a huge area & fireplace.

The weeklong Italian cooking class at Casa Ombuto far exceeded our expectations! We have traveled the world, and think that this vacation was our best ever. We researched the trip before we left, but didn't realize how amazing it would be. Our chef Paula made the class such an amazing experience. When you think of a steriotypical italian chef (flamboyant, hilarious, incredibly skilled, personable, etc...) she is it! We will never cook the same, or think about cooking in the same way again! The course is a wonderful mix of time to yourself in the morning, cooking theory in the intro to what you would make that day, and then hands on cooking for 4ish hours. After a break to get cleaned up - then you get to enjoy a 5 course meal every night with more alcohol than one could possibly drink. Amazingly, given the various skill levels of everyone in the group (11 of us), every dish was excellent!

After this trip, my wife and I are convinced that we had never eaten a real tomato before Tuscany - they are just so good. All the food was local and fresh - which makes all the difference in the world. Your taste buds will dance every night.

The excursion is a nice break from cooking - and we had fun and memorable experiences that day as well. The grounds are impeccable, truly hard to do it justice in the pictures. The staff and support personnel to make the class run perfectly are incredible. We felt like a king and queen for a week.

Don't worry about the question I asked myself before I left - "only 4 cooking classes?" You will get plenty of cooking! Between everyone in the class, and the multiple recipes that one can make for even one dish, we would make between 12-15 recipes/night. PLENTY of cooking! I learned a ton, and my cooking skills took a step up.

I never write these kinds of reviews, but am so moved by the experience that I want everyone to know about how amazing this experience was. Trip of a lifetime.

My 18 year old daughter and I spent an amazing week at Casa Ombuto cooking and also relaxing. The location of the villa is idyllic. On a mountain top above the beautiful medieval village of Poppi, Casa Ombuto is gorgeous and so serene. In the mornings we enjoyed reading by the pool and getting massages or visiting nearby Poppi and Camaldoli. On our free day we hired a driver to take us to Sienna for a wonderful day of sightseeing. The course also includes an excursion to a vineyard, olive oil tasting, sheep farm to sample local cheeses and a ceramics shop all of which were really interesting and fun. Lauretta, the onsite manager of the property, was simply lovely and catered to all of our needs. She could not do enough to make us feel comfortable. Also, the women who prepared our breakfast and lunches and helped with kitchen clean-up were so nice and welcoming. As for the cooking it was AMAZING! Paolo was the best chef ever. She is so knowledgeable and was able to teach us in a way that was both fun and challenging. She is a beautiful person, so warm and funny and we laughed so much that the 4 hours we cooked just flew by. The wine and conversation never stop flowing and you forget how hard you are working.Your level of cooking knowledge isn't important here. By the end of the week you will know how to make delicious and beautifully presented fresh pasta and sauces, as well as pizza, appetizers, main entrees, side dishes and desserts. You will also feel like one big family. I am looking forward to returning, this time also with my husband and son.

Room Tip: The villa sleeps 19. We were assigned a bottom floor apartment that was lovely. All of the rest of...

Driving high into the Tuscan Hills, we finally reach our destination and were not disappointed - it looked even more spectacular than the photos suggested. We immediately met two of our fellow guests from South Africa who we became firm buddies with from the onset. A warm and welcoming Chef Paola appeared confirming we had found the right place! The holiday progressed with a fabulous Welcome Dinner Al Fresco where we got to know the other participants. The company, food and wine could not be faulted. The cookery course was professional, informative (hard work at times) but most of all lots of fun and we were all very impressed with what we managed to produce under the careful tuition of Chef Paola. Nothing was too much trouble for her to explain again or fix if it went wrong! She managed to impart her wisdom and knowledge of Italian cuisine with passion, patience and a cracking sense of humour! Accommodation in our Tuscan idyll was a rustic farmhouse with just the right amount of luxury touches - a beautiful, secluded swimming pool being just one of them, stunning countryside with fabulous treks or walks for those who could move after eating all they had prepared! The beautiful town of Poppi nearby for those who felt inclined to venture slightly further afield. A once in a lifetime, completely unforgettable holiday, we met some wonderful people and we have been inspired to continue with our love of cooking back in the UK. If you love Italy, food and Italian cooking, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place for a holiday of this kind - highly recommend it!

We attended the Mediterranean cooking course at Casa Ombuto, eight absolutely perfect days of friendship, food, wine and tranquility, coached and pampered by the finest team imaginable, Laura, Lauretta and the tireless support personnel.

We managed to do extensive sightseeing of the region through both organized visits to local farms as part of the course and use of a guide, organized by the team, on our free day, all of which significantly enhanced an already amazing week in Tuscany.
