“Beautiful wild west coast beach.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2012

Best beach walk within 3/4 hour from Hamilton. You can walk down from the Ngaranui reserve, or access the beach from the Suckers end of the beach. Whichever way, it is spectacular.

“Good for learning or improving”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

The beach generally has a good size and power for beginners and for those who want to improve, there can be some bigger stuff out the back. The rips aren't to bad but still be very wary. I was told that there wasn't days with a lack of waves but days when the waves were too big. Guaranteed waves everyday, just be careful.

“Our best beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2012

We might be biased because we live here! Nothing better than an evening stroll in the wind, the waves crashing onto the black sand, whilst watching the sun drop into the water in a red and purple melting haze.

“A wonderful beach to walk along”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2012

Surfers flock to Raglan for the ‘left hand breaks’ at Manu and Whale Bays. I am not a surfer but I am fortunate to live a short drive from this coastal settlement that is 48km from Hamilton.

Ngarunui Beach (sometimes called Ocean Beach or Wainui Beach) is a very special place that my dog and I often visit. To find this coastal jewel take Wainui Road, which is opposite the Harbour View Hotel (a great place to have a meal on the veranda and enjoy the laid-back style of this town), cross the one way bridge and after passing the marae, turn right down Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive. The car park is less than 1km down this road and if the beach is crowded there could be a dozen vehicles parked up. However, I often only encounter one or two other beach visitors - although if it is windy there might be several para-surfers demonstrating their skill out from the car park.

Ngarunui Beach allows free running dogs (provided you pick up their ‘poos’) and is a place to walk and enjoy, rather than a swimming/surfing venue. However at the southern end of the 6km stretch of black sand there is a small surf club and opportunities to surf and swim.

A word of caution: Check out the tide tables before you visit, because at high tide you will not be able to walk very far along the beach.
