“Great problem-solving service; good studios in an unusual hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

Have stayed 3 times for multiple nights in the Manhattan studios. Rydges Bell City is an unusual hotel as it's part of a very large accommodation complex right on a legendary east-west arterial road (Bell St) in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. There are few accommodation options in this neck of the woods and if you know Melbourne well, you'll find it a great place to stay to access the Preston market, Thornbury, Northcote, the Merri Creek trail and so on. Having a car helps, but walking and public transport works too.
The studio rooms are of a very high standard although soundproofing isn't good and kitchen utensils are scanty, A couple of maintenance and housekeeping issues I had were quickly resolved - in fact the problem-solving service was easily as good as a 5 star hotel. Slow check-in lets things down though.
The clientele here are noticably different from CBD hotels perhaps because there are many different types of accommodation on the property. Witnessing strange behaviour is not uncommon but it never feels unsafe.

My wife and I recently spent 12 days at Rydges Bell St over the Xmas/New Years period with our two children. We were on level 7 in the West Wing. We selected it mainly because we had family living nearby and wanted to be as close to them as possible during the festive period. I was impressed with the hotel and will stay again next time I am visiting relatives in Melbourne. The room was big enough for 4 people for 12 days, and I liked how having the toilet/bathroom in the middle seemed to separate the room and gave both beds their own personal space and we didn't feel like we were all living in the same room even though we were. Both beds had their own flat screen TVs with Foxtel, which made the kids happy.

The kitchen in the room was fine, including a decent sized oven and a four burner stove top, and was good enough for me to cook something to take along for Xmas with my relatives which was something I was not expecting to be able to do in a hotel. One criticism would be that more cooking equipment would have been nice and allowed better use of the appliances that were available. The service was exemplary, from the reception staff to food and beverage staff, the house keeping and security officers who all made us feel very welcome. The food in the restaurant was tasty, and I especially liked the $20 lunch specials on offer. We had full buffet breakfast included in our Family Fun package at a very reasonable rate. Overall I would say Rydges Bell City exceeded my expectations and we'll stay again.

Nice large rooms with big beds and have always been clean.

Breakfast is good.

One problem is the wait to check-in always seems to take ages maybe could do with more staff.

Have stayed 4 times on business.

Room Tip: Do not get a room near one of the lifts as they are very noisy during the night.

Dear Eagles87

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We have already increased the reception staffing however the peak times unfortunately still cause some delays. We will continue to work to ensure quick and professional service at all times. It is pleasing to note the reference to clean rooms as this reinforces all of the hard work housekeeping have been doing in recent months.
We appreciate your return patronage and look forward to welcoming you back in the new year.

Bit untidy with checking in our room wasn't ready. We had our daugthres wedding to get to and had to wait for an hour after check in time. This made us late to our own daugther's wedding which frankly wasn't good enough. Was offered another rommbut we sepecificially requested a room and it should have bee read. Also gave the hotel advance notice. Not happy with this at all.

Dear Jim R

Please accept my sincere apology for the delay on check in as it is always our intention to meet requests in a timely manner. Specific room requests can be delayed due to the previous occupant departing late or the room required additional cleaning, however in this instance I would expect reception to assist with alternative options so as to not cause unnecessary delay. Thank you for your valuable comments and please assured we will address these with the front office team.

Booted to the outer suburbs for a hotel room on a recent business trip to Melbourne, the CBD was fully booked so I found myself in Preston which sounds further away than it really is. This area of Melbourne has become the new Northcote with more bars and restaurants popping up on the two main streets. This hotel was actually quite convenient and well priced.

I booked a last minute room and ended up in an apartment on the 5th floor which had three double beds (all with TVs) and a small living and dining area. It was more than enough for just me but I imagined it'd be perfect for a small family or maybe two couples looking for some cheap accommodation in Melbourne's fringe.

It was very cosy and the bathroom had Sanctum toiletries (Australian organic soaps, shampoo etc and they're really nice!) which was an added surprise. Keep an eye out for this one when you're looking to stay in Melbourne. It's a small fee for the car park and the internet was fairly well priced.

Room Tip: There are a few wings to this hotel. I stayed in the East wing which seemed to be furthest from the...

After reading all the reviews, was looking forward to our stay. Sadly, it was very disappointing...

After waiting 20 mins to check in, staff seemed to have problems allocating rooms. After another 15 mins, we were allocated a room. I left a card at reception for my partner, with his name on it, as he was still at work. I also asked for a late check out & was told it wasnt an issue as a "priority member".

Once i arrived in the room, i was disappointed to discover a pillar in the middle of the room. This made watching tv in bed impossible. The fridge also wasnt working properly. Nothing was cold.

I complained about the room, & was basically told to deal with it.

When my partner arrived, he couldnt gain access to the room until several calls were made to me. I had already arranged for a card to be held at reception for him!

During the middle of the nite, the noise from other guests kept waking us up. Including people randomly knocking on our door & giggling as they headed down the corridor.

The next morning, we had a call asking us to check out. Again, i had asked for a late check out....

When we did check out, i was made to feel like i was whinging as a ran through the issues we had experienced. Apparently, next time i should request that i dont get the same room.
