“Reasonably comfortable Goldfish bowl!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

We stayed here as a family (2 adults, 2 young kids) for 3 nights in June in a two room apartment.
We were a bit surprised after our airport bus deposited us at the bus depot, telling us that 'we don't drop people off that far!' that we had to catch a taxi. However the apartments are in a nice part of town- close to the Art Gallery of Victoria (Monet was in town) on the St Kilda Road, and actually the location was far better than other Melbourne hotels we've stayed in as it's situated opposite a very regular tram stop, taking only 5 mins into the city.
Beds were very comfortable, and the kitchen was reasonably well-equipped.
Air-conditioning worked nicely in heating the room during a cold and rainy snap.
Yet the thing which bothered us was the very close proximity of the living room to an office block opposite- so close in fact I could read some of the emails on their computer screens! Given the price we payed, I was very disappointed. The effect was of living in a goldfish bowl- we were staying during the working week as well as the weekend, so by kids found it disconcerting to be stared at by office workers during our time there. This obviously rather restricted our behaviour, so the usual slobby things we all do on holidays- walking around in our underpants, etc, were severely curtailed!
We were staying on the 3rd floor, maybe some of the higher floors are better as they may even look out onto the War Memorial opposite, but I cannot speak from experience.
There were a few groovy cafes next door which we availed ourselves of for breakfast, only to be thwarted on the weekend as the places only seemed to open during the working week. Indeed, the whole area became quite desolate after Friday.
The reception staff were lovely and helpful, marred somewhat by billing my credit card twice, which I only found by checking my statements, although this was quickly rectified.
On the whole, I'm not sure we would stay there again due to the somewhat steeper price charged, as well as the whole goldfish bowl element.

Room Tip: Choose a higher floor to avoid being peered at like animals in the zoo!

Dear BoyinOZ

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay at Quest on Dorcas and I am very pleased you found our reception team to be so helpful. Please accept our apologies for the credit card billing error and appreciate you advising we resolved the problem quickly.

I really hope we may be able to welcome you back to Quest on Dorcas in the future. Unfortunately, not all of our apartments have views, however, I would suggest you may like to consider paying a little extra for one of our 2-Bedroom Executive City-View apartments. A great airport shuttle service is StarBus, who drop guests off at Quest on Dorcas directly.

We are lucky to have some great cafés and restaurants close by to Quest on Dorcas and I am glad you enjoyed them. Some of the cafés are open Mon-Fri and Mon-Sat. There are some more excellent cafés for breakfast on a Sunday -only 3-5 minutes walk on St Kilda Road and also the Observatory Café at the Royal Botanic Gardens. I will ensure our reception team remember to offer this information to our guests looking for a delicious Sunday breakfast.

I appreciate you taking the time to advise us of your feedback and thank you for staying with us.

Best wishes

My wife and I stayed at the Quest on Dorcas as part of visiting the Monet's Garden exhibition. For the National Gallery of Victoria and for the many Southbank attractions it is a great location. It is also well located for either a walk or a short tram ride into the CBD.

The surrounding area has many shops, convenience stores and good cafes and restaurants. The gardens are just across St Kilda Road.

We only had a one bedroom apartment, not a superior one but it was adequate for our needs. The view from the balcony was uninspiring of rooftops and the buidling next door. One has to take a more up market apartment for views, etc. However, we couldn't fault the actual apartment for layout, bed, bathroom and little touches like having filter coffee available. The apartment was clean and tidy and not very "worn"

A big plus were the staff at reception. They couldn't have been more helpful with information and the like.

Our only negative was the parking for which we paid extra. The parking garage is difficult to negotiate and finding a spot can be a challenge, as is geting into it once found. As well, some of the residents drive way too fast through the garage. one has to be alert not to get run over.

Room Tip: Go for a "superior" apartment if you want a view

Dear BTDMSydney

I am very grateful for you providing your feedback on your recent stay at Quest on Dorcas. I have also passed on your kind comments to our team about the helpful service and information they provided you with during your stay and I am delighted to learn you found your apartment clean and tidy.

Our car park has 7 levels, with lots of easily accessible car parks particularly on the higher floors. Some of the spaces on the lower floors are quite tricky to park in and I suspect you may have encountered one of the trickier ones. I have passed on your comments to our team about the car park and will encourage them to more clearly communicate the information about the car park.

Thank you for staying with us and we would love to welcome you back again!

Warm regards

My husband and I stayed here last weekend with our 3month old baby. Friendly and efficient check in, free parking and the 1 bedroom apartment was all we needed. These apartments are located in a great spot close to the Cbd, botanical gardens or Albert Park.

we were a group of 8 friends who stayed in 2 separate 2 bedroom apartments for a weekend trip in may 2013. the location of the apartments was fantastic, right next to the amazing botanical gardens yet only a couple of tram stops to the city centre on the very central st kilda road. taxis were also abundant on this main road. the 2 bedroom apartments are very spacious and modern with 2 bathrooms and plenty of room for 4-5 guests. try and request an apartment on the 11th floor or above for fantastic views over the botanical gardens. staff were very friendly and helpful with our requests. we had a fantastic stay and would definitely come back.

A friend and I shared a 2 bedroom apartment for a five day girls catch up in Melbourne. Location is superb with proximity to St Kilda Rd trams and an easy stroll to city and southbank. Staff were pleasant and helpful throughout the stay.
We chose the apartment so we could do some self catering. Range of kitchen utensils could have been better although appliances were excellent. Proximity of South Melbourne Markets makes self catering a delight.
Rooms were spacious, beds large and comfortable and bathrooms well appointed. However the carpets could do with a good shampoo. I wore my socks around for a couple of hours one night and they were almost black. Views from our 6th floor apartment were limited, but we didn't spend too much time there anyway.
A special mention about the small bottleshop/coffee shop located in the basement of the building - the guy who runs it is very helpful and seems to know his stuff. It's very convenient for an early morning coffee or to pick up a bottle of something after a day's sightseeing
I would certainly stay at Quest on Dorcas again.

Dear Sharon

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your stay at Quest on Dorcas. I am so glad that the staff were pleasant and helpful, that is always lovely to hear.
I do apologise for the carpet, we do try to steam clean them regularly, however I have now implemented a procedure to ensure every apartment is steam cleaned frequently.

Ken at the coffee and liquor shop is fantastic and we here think the coffee is delicious also, I have passed on your feedback and he was delighted.

When you return, please do not hesitate to request any additional cooking utensils we will be more than happy to provide these for the duration of your stay. Although not all of our apartments have views, we have some gorgeous city view apartments, please feel free to request for your next stay and we will do our best to accommodate.
Once again thank you for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Warm regards

We stayed here Saturday 23 March so that we could participate in a fun run on Sunday morning. We booked quite early online, and requested a week or so later a late checkout so we could shower after our run. It couldnt be guaranteed, but we were asked to make contact closer to the date. We did this and a late checkout was available. It cost no extra. We were very grateful for this - so thanks guys!!
The rooms are new and well appointed. We have 3 kids, and one slept on the couch as there was no rollaway bed. This was no problem for us, and I'm sure if we had asked at reception for an extra bed it would have been provided. Staff here are great. Much much much better than some other apartment accomm nearby.
Tram stop is very close, there's a small bottle shop and coffee shop next door, and a couple of small supermarkets within about 200 metres. Parking and access is easy. I strongly reccommend this Quest for family travellers to Melbourne. Its quiet but safe at night, and so close to the city.

I've stayed here a few times on business trips. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are spacious and well appointed and the location just south of the city centre and a short walk from the botanical garden is ideal.

A tram stop is located less than 100m from the hotel, which provides access to all areas of the city. The hotel does not provide breakfast but there are numerous  cafes on Dorcas street.
