“Ok but very basic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

Came here with a large group of 10 without any booking which was great, however the food was very basic - in taste and presentation. The service was good but was disappointed with my meal which looked and tasted like stew! They provide mini wooden spoons to eat with (and chopsticks) which some guests commented on how impossible it was to eat noodles with and how their mothers all hit them with wooden spoons as children! The wine was good.

“Tasty and good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

Service was great and all food was tasty and fresh. We ordered the pork gyoza followed by salmon soba salad, sugiyaki beef and tofu and wasabi beef.

It was all very tasty and fresh but prob not the BEST Japanese we've had.

Def an good cheap eat with great service and nice restaurant. Would def come again.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2012

I went to Wood Spoon with my daughter and her Japanese friend, and it did not impress. The menu was promising but the service was basic, and the setting ... well, there is artful Japanese simplicity and there is just plain dull, and this was the latter. Our Japanese guest was polite but clearly not blown away, and raised her eyebrows at the Chinese and Thai items on the menu. My meal, "Onigiri set of three" was basically just three flavoured rice balls (for $17.50). On the other hand, my daughter had the Dengaku Don (Eggplant with rice) and said it was very nice. Wood Spoon is adequate, but there is much better budget Japanese food to be found in Melbourne.
