“Authentic Greek with a family feel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2014

We stumbled across Varelli when looking for something different for dinner along Norton St one night. We got the seafood platter as well as some traditional Greek entrees and were pleasantly surprised at the authentic taste and the friendly nature of the staff. The music was great, the atmosphere was pleasant and the portions were fair for myself and my partner. Service was a little slow to begin with but the taste of the food was well worth the wait. I will be back again.

“Fantastic Greek”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

This place is authentic and beautifully run by folks who really enjoy what they're doing. The menu is straightforward but perfectly realised. We'll be back really soon

“Very tasty Greek experience ..... but ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2014

Went here with my wife on a Cudo ($49) voucher which was supposed to offer a $179 dining experience. Apart from somewhat slow service, at the beginning and between platters, the food is excellent - both the seafood and meat platters, with reasonably god portions - a little more octopus on the seafood platter would have ben a nice treat. The $179 meal deal is a bit of a con job as you get around half a meat and half a seafood platter to share while the $179 advertised is based on a full meat for 2 ($100) and seafood for 2 ($70) - the $9 is for 2 glasses of wine. Not that we could ever imagine we'd be able to eat a full platter of each, nevertheless the 'value' stated on the Cudo voucher is a bity cheeky. Again, notwithstanding the 'promotional' aspects, the food is definitely up here with the best Greek restaurants in town. And, yes, well and truly worth the $49.

“The food experience is irrelevant when other diners are smoking”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

What a shame; nice dinner, lovely group of friends, very good entrees but all undone by the other diners who were smoking. First round they at least went outside - but stood right out the front of the large windows that open onto the restaurant but next round they were too thoughtless to even get out of their seats. Their idea of being thoughtful was to hold their cigarettes out the window. I was reluctuant to complain as a lovely friend had organised the dinner and then I realised one of the restaurant staff was smoking with them so made it very clear that the restaurant did not care.

“Good Greek food in an Italian Enclave”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2014

It may seem odd to go to a Greek restaurant in Norton St Leichhardt - an area supposedly specialising in Italian eateries, nonetheless that's what the 4 of us did recently and were pleasantly surprised by our decision. We carefully avoided any of the dishes which included "chips & salad" and found our meal very enjoyable as a result. The best dish was the bbq octopus - a large section of a big octopus, not the usual baby bits - which had been marinated and bbq-ed very well. Other dishes were sardines, haloumi, meat balls & lamb shoulder AND of course, plenty of greek salad. In all, a very good meal, served by a friendly, attentive waiter on a busy Friday night. Our waiter provided us with some complimentary yoghurt with honey & nuts to have with our greek coffee - much appreciated.
The only negative was the house wine. Make the effort to BYO and pay the modest $5 corkage charge - it will ensure the wine is as good as the food.
