My husband and I visited Maui from 2/23/04 - 3/3/04 and stayed at the Maalaea Banyons which is just steps away from the Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea. I am extremely critical about places I stay for my vacations and always write a review to Tripadvisor (sometimes good sometimes bad). I am very pleased to say that this will be a really good review. We had a really nice, tastefully decorated, spacious 2 bedroom 2 bath condo (unit 408 which we rented directly from the owner). All condos are oceanview and what a spectacular view!!! The ocean is literally a few steps off the property. There is a pool and hot tub, plus a great gas grill setup - 2 grills, a place to put your food & utensils with a sink, plus tables and chairs while you wait for your food to grill. The grounds are immaculate and the staff is friendly, courteous and always willing to help. The condo is set up with the master bedroom upstairs (it's a loft) and a bathroom w/shower. The downstairs has a bedroom in the back of the unit. There is another full bath downstairs. Kitchen has all the major appliances, utensils, pot and pans and includes a washer & dryer. Living room is spacious which opens to a huge lanai that has a table with four chairs. This unit has air conditioning (not that you really need it with the trade winds always coming in and a ceiling fan in the living room & both bedrooms). There are also extra towels, including beach towels, coolers and a small beachchair. The complex is on a quiet dead end street, with the Maalaea Marina, Maui Ocean Center, restaurants, shops, mini golf and a gas station/foodmart/Carl's Burger all within a 5 minute walk. What I really liked about the condo is the location. It's right in the middle of the island (between Kihei & Lahania). We've stayed in different condos on the island, usually on the west side. If you have never been to Maui you need to know that to get to most parts of the island there is only 1 main road and traffic is always very heavy, especially mid to late afternoon when all the locals get out of work and the majority of the flights come in from the mainland. If you're thinking of staying on the west side (Kaanapali, Kapalua, Lahaina) it's at least an hour from the airport and if you are traveling to Kihei, Wailea or Makena from the west side it's about 1 - 1 1/2 hours - even longer if your going to see the sunrise on the mountain or traveling the Road to Hana. Maalaea it's only 20 minutes from the airport and traveling to west side and south side only 1/2 hour.I highly recommend this condo for all the above reasons plus it feels like you are at home and staying in a condo is much more reasonably priced and has more room then staying in an overpriced resort!!!
