We spent 3 nights here and could not have asked for more. About 5 min drive above the village of Villanders, which is itself about 5-10 min drive from the Bolzano-Brenner autostrada - up a very steep and very windy road, prepare yourself! - the Pension is a pretty and picture-perfect Alpine style chalet, festooned with beautiful, well-kept window boxes. Due to its altitude, Erlacher enjoys a spectacular view across the Val d'Isarco towards the Alpe di Siusi, Sasso Lungo, Sasso Piatto and Sciliar - a view that we never tired of.
The Pension is plainly but appropriately furnished, the rooms simple but comfortable, most with balconies which allow you to enjoy the amazing views. The beds were comfortable and offered that holy grail of the European hotel room - duvets, which were delightfully soft and comfortable. Standards of cleanliness in all parts of the Pension were absolutely impeccable.
The breakfast buffet was delicious, varied and plentiful - the service quick, with supplies topped up constantly. Originally we only booked B&B, but as the Pension sits on its own - and since most places we passed seemed mainly to cater to their own guests - we choose to eat at Erlacher for two nights. There is a set menu with no choice, but they do make this available to you at breakfast time - and they had no problem accommodating a request for vegetarian substitutions, no mean feat with the meaty South Tyrolean fare on offer! The meals were beautifully-presented (garnished with flowers from the garden) and enormously tasty, prepared by Angelika, who was sure to come out and check that everyone had enjoyed their meal. We were lucky enough on the Saturday night to enjoy a 5-course 'Gala Dinner' with aperitifs in the pretty garden beforehand - a real treat. The dining room has recently been refurbished and extended - it is airy and sympathetically-decorated, and enjoys the awesome panoramic views towards the mountains. It is definitely worth booking half-board in advance - the food is excellent and it cuts out having to drive round looking for somewhere to eat for ages - we also had to pay a bit more having not chosen to order dinner in advance. But it was well worth it and a lesson learned!
The welcome, service and advice provided by the hosts - Markus in particular - was absolutely impeccable, and indeed since we were only spending a few days in an area with so much to offer and reasonable distances to cover, his advice on things to do was invaluable. Instead of taking the autostrada back to visit Bolzano, he recommended driving along the higher roads to Soprabolzano and taking the Rittnerbahn cable car down into Bolzano - which cut out all worries about parking and traffic, not to mention the excitement of arriving in a new town in such a novel way! Unsure about which of the walks in the Cicerone guide we should choose, we instead took Markus' advice to walk to the summit of Villanderer Berg from the Gasterhutte, a little further up the hill - and as a result enjoyed views all the way to the Austrian Alps as well as of many of the Dolomites, almost in solitude except for the constant tinkling of cowbells and chirping of grasshoppers.
All of the other guests when we stayed spoke German, and our hosts spoke only German, though they did seem to know a little English. This does not seem at all unreasonable in this part of the world, but it's worth bearing bringing your phrasebook just in case your German and Italian aren't up to much.
All in all an absolutely fantastic experience. We could not have asked for more from Markus, Angelika and Waltraud, who worked hard and constantly while we were there to ensure that everything was perfect for their guests. They were cleaning, sweeping and watering the flowers before we were even finished breakfast! There seemed to be a reasonable number of guests who had stayed before, and it was easy to see why. A brilliant welcome, clean and comfortable accommmodation, delicious and plentiful food - and oh! that view!
