Stayed for 4 nights here as part of our first ever trip to the Auvergne and we were overwhelmed with not only our choice of accommodation, but also the region as a whole.
Starting with the Auberge, on arrival we were greeted straight away by Simon & Shirley who welcomed us like family and made us feel at home within minutes. Our room was more than adequate, and travelling with our 12-month old and all the luggage associated with a baby, we had plenty of space to unload and relax, without feeling cluttered or claustrophobic as you sometimes can in many hotel "family rooms".
Breakfast was simple, light and tasty, served by Simon who ensured we had everything we needed in terms of maps and ideas for the day ahead. I'm not a big breakfast person, so a freshly-baked croissant and some sliced fruit was pretty much perfect to set me up for the day.
Each day we explored the area which is sublimely beautiful with sweeping roads climbing the forest-covered mountains, interrupted only by picture-pretty villages with cute cafes, shops and a pace of life that we just don't find back in Britain. I heartily recommend a drive up to the Col de Beal and having a coffee at the top admiring the view. Eating out for lunch in the area is great value too, with the obligatory "menu du jour" priced around 13 Euros for a tasty 3 course lunch in most places we found.
We ate back at the Auberge each night and Shirley always cooked up a gorgeous 4-course menu each evening. The confit of Duck with Puy Lentils was a particular favourite of mine. A small, but decent quality wine selection included a memorable Auvergne Red wine which I reckon was as good as any Claret for a similar price.
There's plenty of nice places to walk nearby too, and I trundled off up the forest road one morning with the pram and watched the first rays of sun come beaming through the forest canopy. A very special sight indeed.
I've never been to the Auvergne before. In fact, I'd never even heard of it before coming across the Auberge de Chabanettes (which we chose only due to its Tripadvisor rating). One thing's for sure, we will be back and can't wait to go exploring some more, and hopefully having the beautiful pink hotel to return to at the end of the day.
